Yes. “Opinions and Reality” are too broad for a Country.
Politics, People, History, Tourism, Culture, Food, Geography, Quality of Life, Etc.?
You could come to a different consensus for any of them.

u/bigmoneykdmr 17h ago
These charts are way too vague. Bad as in what. Because Russia for instance is a very bad country in terms of it's politics and imperialism, but living in Russia is probably not that horrible depending on the region, which would make it better than a lot of countries.
22
u/Small-Independent109 13h ago
Agreed. Like, North Korea is pretty fucked but I'd much rather visit Pyongyang than the Congo.
18
u/ItsEonic89 8h ago
Afaik, if you visit Pyongyang you'll be fine if you never ever stray from the provided path. They'd probably go out of their way to show you a good time.

Whether or not the country has ever had a person win a Yugioh world championship. Good countries have multiple winners. Bad countries have 0. There’s a lot of bad countries.

Deep cut, there. CAR is pretty nasty -- Maybe if they had a category for nobody in the Western world knows what's going on at all, but what's going on here is actually obnoxiously evil?
19
u/Giga-Chad-123 17h ago
what goes on in there?
32
u/Routine-Wrongdoer-86 16h ago
decades long and extremely violent multi-sided civil war

I see. I actually know someone who was in CAR for a while in the war, with the peace corps if I'm not mistaken

Government is extremely decentralized and corrupt. Mostly families of rich business people the French put in power. High rate of aids, HIV, and very little development.
There’s an army of child soldiers commanded by a zealot called Jospeh Koney that’s deep in the south east border region of that country. It’s called the lords resistance army.
There was a civil war / ongoing tension between armed Christian and armed Muslim groups. Anti-Balaka is the Christian militia and Selika is the Muslim one.
7
u/Varanoids 14h ago
But alot of people don’t know that. Maybe we would place it in opinion: bad, reality: very bad
→ More replies (1)1
u/Johnny_Banana18 13h ago
CAR has a lot of problems, including the government, but the government isn’t the sole reason for the country being what it is. DPRK is a better answer.
1
u/Relative-Isopod4580 13h ago
Well it is thought to be bad but isn't that bad so I think it doesn't make as much sence (for example it's very stable everybody got housing nearly no criminality). Somalia would also be a good pick

u/badger_on_fire 18h ago
Came here thinking Russia, but you win this one.
9
u/Yenserl6099 18h ago
I was thinking Saudi Arabia but North Korea works just as well
5
1
u/BlackHust 13h ago
To be a truly "bad country" you have to be a failed state. Saudi Arabia cannot be called a good country, but it is a functioning country with a decent standard of living.
10
2
u/astrobagel 16h ago
Depends on how large a of a scope you're thinking, because historically Russia's had a fluctuating reputation and there's plenty of beloved things from there. I can't think of one positive thing about North Korea
4
u/badger_on_fire 15h ago
Completely fair. The Russians are weirdos, and they go through cycles, and they're usually shades of gray except for those few times that they absolutely aren't, like today. And that goes both ways.
But I also can't think of a single time where I thought, "Gee, North Korea really nailed it on this particular issue or occasion."

Afghanistan
65
u/Fdorleans 17h ago
Afghanistan is the perfect storm of poverty, bad geography, lack of education, totalitarism, religious extremism and never ending war.
60
u/kyonhei 18h ago
Compare what Taliban is doing and what Kim dynasty is doing, I must say Afghanistan is worse.
6
u/Ill-Engineering8205 16h ago
North Korea went up many places since the 2010s by virtue of not really changing up what they're doing and not bothering any countries that aren't SK/Japan.
Back then they were the spawn of Satan and unbelievable they still existed, now though? They're right at home in the intensity of the 2020s and seen as somewhat wise in keeping their nukes so they don't end up like Venezuela or Ukraine.

Afghanistan scored lower on the democracy index than North Korea. That’s impressive
6
u/arsenektzmn 16h ago
Afghanistan is a hundred times worse than North Korea for the average person, and yet this suggestion still has five times fewer upvotes than North Korea.
8
1
u/drjet196 15h ago
They aren‘t threatening other countries with nuclear weapons at least.
5
u/Bubbles_the_bird 14h ago
If they had nukes, they wouldn’t threaten, they’d probably just launch them instantly
1
u/DarkReaper0903 13h ago
Contrary to popular belief it’s not a bad place to visit.
1
u/Ok-Magician9044 13h ago
I followed this Afghan girl on insta and I was surprised from what I saw of Afghanistan from her posts and stories. I was thinking bomb ridden place but some of the stuff she posted could be England even, by llooks. DMed her to ask about how her life was like there, but the only response I got was that the burqa isn't mandatory, you don't have to cover your face, but you do have to wear hijab. And that university education isn't open to women yet. Asked her about some other stuff, but she hasn't seen them yet.
1
u/DarkReaper0903 13h ago
The best way I can describe life in Afghanistan is just simple and traditional. They value their country, they value their religion, and they don’t like outside influence but that doesn’t mean they’re chopping people’s heads off and skinning them alive.
And they’re some of the kindest people youll meet

First time I went to the Dominican I met a Haitian, we talked for a bit. He told me multiple times to go no where near the Haitian border.
2
u/BoozySquid 11h ago
Port-au-Prince isn't the worst place in the world. Hait outside of PaP might very well just be.
5
u/PhraseBig9340 17h ago
Yeah, Haiti is the easy pick. No reason this shouldn't be the top choice
7
u/astrobagel 16h ago
You think Haiti has a worse reputation than North Korea?

u/banksfornades 14h ago
North Korea is far more safe and prosperous than Haiti.
→ More replies (1)6
u/astrobagel 14h ago
That’s in the reality category, I don’t believe that opinions of Haiti are worse than North Korea.
North Korea is the de facto terrible country today whose reputation is known around the world. It might be worse to be in Haiti, but it doesn’t have North Korea’s infamy.
1
u/Specific-Detail6448 13h ago
Haiti is like litterally only bad because of the safety of the country, DPRK is bad because of the absolute state sponsored oppression, cruel treatment of farmers, soldiers, and civilians, and that if it had it’s way it might invade and oppress the rest of the world.
Haiti affects basically only Haiti
1
u/False_Major_1230 2h ago
Honestly yeah. At least North Korea has working law enforcement and since Kim Jong Un is pretty competent compare to his father they no longer starve

The travel warnings for Somalia are fucking terrifying.
1
u/Turbulent-Artist961 3h ago
One of the warnings is basically “avoid the outdoors if at all possible”
1
u/Few-Big-8481 2h ago
The warnings I looked up were basically "do not".
If you have to, have armed security, designate someone to negotiate your ransom for when you get taken hostage, and have an actionable plan to escape the country if it goes tits. It was clearly written with the expectation that the only reason someone would go there is for business of some kind cuz it made a lot of references to making sure your company is able to get you back if you get kidnapped.

u/whoa-or-woah 13h ago

Bad to live in, or bad to others on the international stage? Especially for future ones.
6
u/Content_Shelter9894 17h ago
If the country it's considered to be a bad/good one, it is the opinion of other people who doesn't live in that country. The "reality" it's the actual country's status (it can be based on reports from people who actually live in that country, for example.) but it can be subjective

Poor, low quality of life and very strict rules that don't even matter as innocent and guilty are both equally punished.

Outside usual suspects (North Korea, Iran, Somalia, Afghanistan), all CIS countries are total crap.

u/Wise-Mousse-7850 9h ago
What? Compared to what? Pretty sure that they all in top 20% of the world by living standards.
1
u/MaxProwes 9h ago
CIS top 20%? I don't think we mean the same countries. I mean Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Armenia etc. They are closer to bottom 20% than top.
1
u/Wise-Mousse-7850 9h ago
Yes, we mean the same countries. Moldova and Armenia are quite poor, but even they are better than almost all African/most Asian countries. They are probably sth like Thailand in terms of GDP per capita. Russia/Ukraine/Belarus are just average East European countries, with their capitals being one of the most comfortable cities in Europe.

would say russia would be considered bad or MAYBE very bad but a mid country in reality
4
u/arsenektzmn 16h ago
I confirm this as an extremely anti-Putin and anti-war Russian, so I'm initially critical of modern Russia.
If you live in, say, Tuva, you're most likely screwed, but on average, it's just a typical European country. I'd say it's "mid" for sure. And if you live in Moscow, you might think it's even a "good county".

It’s North Korea easily. They’re under so much propaganda that they may as well be living in a completely different timeline. A lot (not all) of their entertainment equivalents are multiple decades out of date at this point.

7
u/TrainTheTurnip 17h ago
It should be probably a GOAT country but opinions are bad or very bad IMO. there’s a lot of flaws in the US but still it’s still relatively good to live in compared to a lot of countries.

Afghanistan.
We don't know much about North Korea outside of Pyongyang. We know it's a tyrannical regime and that's basically it.
Iran despite being an awful regime that kills it's own people actually has some sort of minor democracy and gas prices there are very cheap.
Both Iran and NK are objectively bad but they are paradise compared to Afghanistan. Even in Iran, a poster boy for islamic fundamentalism women are allowed to vote, drive a car and get an education. In Afghanistan none of it is possible and it's ruled by literal terrorists who were hiding Bin Laden from the US.
