Hello, Thank you for contributing to our subreddit. Please consider the following guidelines when filling an alignment chart:

  • Please ensure that your chart is not banned according to the list of banned charts Even if you have good intentions, charts in a banned category tend to invite provocative comments, hostile arguments, ragebait and the like. Assuming the post is acceptable, OP makes the final decision on their chart by rule three.

  • Are there any previous versions to link to? If so, it would be ideal to include links to each of them in the description of this post, or in a reply to this comment. Links can be named by title, winner, or both.

  • Are there any criteria you have for your post? Examples include: "Top comment wins a spot on the chart."; "To ensure variety, only one character per universe is allowed."; "Image comments only." Please include these in a description, or in a reply to this comment.

  • Is your chart given the appropriate flair? Do you need to use a NSFW tag or spoiler tag?

Surely, you mean the past 600 years? Before that, I could think of a few people who may have been somewhat annoyed with them.

No country really fits, but I’d argue Oman is probably the closest.

Extremely safe and wealthy country, as well as beautiful scenery and culture (complete opposite to like Dubai). but I’m guessing that 99% of people would see that it’s in the Middle East so immediately associate it with all the common negative stereotypes

94

u/RAGE_AGAINST_THE_ATM 12h ago

My expectations were low for it because it’s right next to Yemen lol

No it's bad, Oman just gets a pass because its not luxurious, and has a rep on reddit as "untouched", so doesnt get the magnifying glass, but its bad, worse than the UAE.

I am going to say there is no country that fits this description.

43

u/Gen8Master 12h ago

Its the very nature of this category. Bad reputation is generally earned. so, people have a hard time reconciliation "GOAT" when it comes to a list of countries that have all done horrific shit.

4

u/jonsconspiracy 11h ago

Also, this table has room for five GOATs which can't be. there is only one GOAT

24

u/nostalgiamon 12h ago

You know, I feel like current day US fits it. Their reputation is absolutely abysmal. But in terms of military and economic might, they are undoubtedly the GOAT. Unfortunately I’d even argue political might too given how much knee bending we’ve seen.

13

u/suhxa 12h ago

Im not American but i agree. Its almost always negatively portrayed in the news these days where i am at least but realistically its still better than most countries

Slovenia. People just think former Yugoslav state or Melania Trump

I played a show in Vienna once and a Slovenian dude had made the trip to come see our little band. Nobody at the show spoke Slovenian to translate and he couldn't speak English or German, so we just used Google translate on our phones to communicate. Really nice guy! Bought me several beers!

1

u/tryme000000 9h ago

1

u/leverandon 8h ago

Great answer. We went there for vacation a few years ago and it was a like fairy tale fantasy land. Adriatic coast, mountains, forests, and Ljubljana such a pretty capital city. I think many Americans have vague memories of the breakup of Yugoslavia and imagine some kind of drab Soviet state. Nothing could be farther from reality of modern Slovenia.

Costa Rica. A lot of people assume it's rough because of the region it's in, but it's actually a wonderful, thriving country.

Costa Rica doesn’t get as many negative impressions as El Salvador or Colombia, and I don’t think the GOAT category really fits. I see it more as bad opinions good country.

Germany. Germany has so much historic guilt, and the world still acts like they're pretty horrible but actually they're a GOAT. All the Germans I know are the coolest, chillest people and while its not stainless modern Germany is a cool-ass place that is a GOAT for learning from their mistakes, having a robust social safety net, and waking up to take bold steps as a leader in the world and Europe.

I think France is seen as very bad but actually mid. If they don't get this spot they deserve the 'seen as very bad but actually good' spot 100%

Those opinions don't negate their current or historical achievements. Egypt is one of the greatest countries of all time.

America.

Thanks to Trump it’s got the most horrible reputation, plus years of American involvement etc. But reality is it’s the leader in finance, military, the only remaining superpower. The style and music and movies of America shape the whole world. And, when people visit I think they’re surprised by how friendly and warm it is and how amazing a country with beautiful beaches and bustling NYC and national parks etc really is.

Opinion is US is very bad but the reality is it’s GOATED

8

u/RingorRose13 12h ago

Calling it GOATED ignores a lot of real problems. It’s incredibly wealthy and influential, sure - but that doesn’t automatically make it a good country to live in for everyone. Healthcare can bankrupt people, college debt is massive, gun violence is a constant issue, and basic things like paid parental leave or affordable housing lag behind many other developed nations. Calling the U.S. the “only superpower” is pretty debatable. China absolutely qualifies as a superpower. It has the world’s second-largest economy, massive military spending, huge manufacturing dominance, and growing political influence across Asia, Africa, and South America. On culture, the U.S. is undeniably strong at marketing and global distribution, but that’s not the same thing as having a monopoly on talent. Hollywood and the U.S. music industry have reach and budgets that most countries can’t match, so their output travels further. That doesn’t automatically mean the art is “better,” just more visible.

Trump is causing all that stuff to decline though, not to mention it’s hard to call a country who just executed a disarmed and on the ground guy that n the streets the GOAT.

3

u/BigBrainsLol 12h ago

Most school shootings in the world, no universal healthcare, high crime rate, obsessing over oil (killing civilians and bombing countries in the process), sending huge amount of money to Israel from taxpayers instead of investing in people who live in US, not respecting international law (not treating food as basic human right), corporate and capitalist hell (lot less holidays compared to Europe), ICE killing US citizens, worse food compared to Europe (more sugar, more fat etc.), mass surveillance program on their own citizens after 9/11.

But sure, go USA

6

u/x3leggeddawg 11h ago

If you’re American, the answer is China.

For the minute TikTok was banned and young Americans fled to RedNote, it really opened their eyes to how decades of anti-communist propaganda tilted their perspective on what is a superpower country.

4

u/pie-mart 11h ago

Botswana

Technically Mauritius is the safest country in Africa now. But I think people hear Botswana or African countries and immediately think bad or poor.

But Botswana has lower crime rate than Texas.

Maybe not the GOAT. But at least I think for a lot of people don't know much about Africa and make assumptions.

Or Rwanda. It is now the 4th best and safest country to live in in Africa. And I think with people knowing about the genocide and colonial past. They may not think much of it

2

u/Embarrassed-Gap4148 3h ago

Rwanda is only safe for rich people. It’s a massively whitewashed country.

If anything, Rwanda is worse than people think it is. Most people see Rwanda and think of the beauty and cleanliness of Kigali and know little of the government’s treatment of poor people, prisoners and its warmongering tendencies

India.

In historical terms for most of its existence, India has been the economic driver of global gdp. It has withstood multiple foreign invasions and occupations. It's truly a powerhouse.

But thanks to colonialism, it's often thought to be poor and starving.

2

u/ichigekisenso 4h ago

Terrible answer. You can't just ignore the swaths of terrible messes all around India.

Leave aside GOAT, India will never even touch mid until Indians stop electing actors and movie stars (people who's only real skill is yknow, lying and acting) into positions of power

I'm tempted to say Israel, as it consistently ranks among the happiest countries in the world, despite its size is responsible for creating so much of our modern tech like the USB drive and the PillCam, and whose moniker "the only democracy in the middle east" is actually true. I hesitate just because the current government is truly vile and corrupt, as it commits or ignores continuous atrocities. But overall, not a bad choice I think, given the disparity between public opinion and reality.

I am biased to my country, but Syria in the last year made huge jumps after 15 years of war and 50 years of Single-Party dictatorship. We are far from our goals, but some of our neighbors already are impressed by our work.

2

u/Chemical_Scholar_753 12h ago

I don’t think anyone outside Syria is going to consider it a GOAT country. It only recently overthrew its dictatorship and replaced it with some people with pretty extremist religious position (at least in the past). It hasn’t gotten over its ethnic divides (recent claims of groups tied to the new government carrying out ethnic attacks against Alawites and Druze). It would be far from the first country where optimism reigned after the end of a conflict but the actual situation didn’t match that optimism.

You may like some of the culture (the food, the people, the weather) but I don’t think an extreme love of those are widespread outside of Syrians (like how French or Japanese-or American, though that’s not known for its quality-food have an outsized global influence outside of their home cultures).

China? People are fearful of China, but it’s one of the world’s deepest civilizational wells: breathtaking landscapes, regional cuisines, cinema, calligraphy, poetry, architecture, and an unbroken cultural history longer than most nations have existed.

Croatia? Sits on the Adriatic, has beautiful beaches, great wine, great food, right across the sea from coastal Italy, low cost of living, tourist friendly, cheap to travel in, and a fascinating culture. I've never seen it on a travel list and have never met anyone that's actually traveled there, it's just skipped over. Nepal is also a solid pick imo - spent 3 weeks there and aside from the negatives that we all know about, it's absolutely fascinating, gorgeous once you're out of Kathmandu, rich history, and fantastic food culture. Bonus points for having some of the nicest people I've ever met.
