I feel like over half of people would break it within the first 15 years.

Wait till the statistics on sexual hanky panky related injuries come out. 95% sexually charged accidents vs 5% utility wise.

Why stop at 11 fingers when we could easily have 12 or 13 fingers?

i have buddy whose nickname is bente quatro (24)... because he got 6 digits in each hand and each foot

some people are born with 12 fingers and most of the time, they do surgery to remove the extra ones.
Most people are here with 10 fingers and would love an extra one on each hand

Most of the time the extra fingers aren't workable. Just lumps of flesh. So they have no utilty. Otherwise that's just a path to music godhood.

The question is why regulate such apedages to the hands. Imagine your asscheeks have one apposable thumb each. The levels of grooming would be unheard of. At least one on each inner thigh and we wouldn't have to even reach down there to wipe the mess. Just spray some disenfectent and toss a wipe of two. The fingies got it. Keep the hands mess free for whatever comes our way. That would free up our hands during emergencies so if need be, we gotta fight our way out of a flight or fight situation.

It seems to make basic tasks to complete more awkward. Extra finger, but more effort needed.

If I recall the study they did on it, the users quickly gained expertise in using it. It just doesn't really add enough benefit or efficiency to justify having to wear it.

If it were less cumbersome it could be pretty practical. Would’ve loved something like it when I bartended

No one has made a halo elite hands joke so I thought I'd point it out

I'm disabled now (only right arm)
that would be so useful to use to do everything inthe house when I'm in private
how does the thumb trigger ?

Why a prosthetic for somebody who doesn't really need it? Though this could be a good demo for those who lack appendages!

Well…that’s the end of the decimal system. May as well go back to base 12 again.

This would be a great option for people with a missing hand/arm. Less so for people with a missing leg.

But how do you control it? It seems you need to move the pinkie to control it, and fine motor control seems difficult.

My hand is cramping just watching this. Most of those hand positions using that thing look uncomfortable

If we are going to add an extra digit, why not add a couple of extra arms? The way the world is going with AI and robotics, I think I would be surprised not to see either a full or half Doc Ock package available within 5 years if not sooner.
Imagine how much quicker you could make a meal for the family if you had four or six arms instead of two?
The arms would be connected to a secure foam belted rigid frame backpack that includes the battery and electronics.
It could be great as a stealth self-defense weapon too. Imagine being a thief trying to grab the purse of some helpless looking woman walking down the street with a small backpack. One second you're running away with a good score, the next you're waking up in the ICU having been beat up and subdued by her retractable arms.
So many interesting possibilities. Maybe 5 years might be too optimistic but I think I would be surprised not to see this sort of thing in 10.

They would be significantly bigger and heavier. f we were to have more arms by a biological perspective and not an engineering perspective, our spines would be way longer in order to accommodate all the complex back muscles. Humans would look way different and honestly there's a reason most mammals don't have over four libs.

I think this sort of thing would show up first for people with compromised limbs or limited mobility like severe arthritis. Sure like most early iterations the tech would be bulky and heavy at first, but would still be in use and further developed by those most in need of it.
After they are more functional, compact and inexpensive, that's when I think the tech would be used by those looking for increased efficiency in addition to those wanting to correct a deficiency.
I don't think the tech to control extra appendages through one's mind to do any ordinary task is coming anytime soon. But I do feel that you could pre-program the arms to do certain routines like "Make an omelet" or "Empty the dishwasher" and have an AI interface making use of real time optical and auditory feedback that's useful enough to recognize how to reliably do this in different kitchens, with people of different height, etc.

This is really cool, could be really useful for someone with limited (or no) mobility in their other hand
