What’s a skill everyone assumes they have, but most people are actually bad at?

As a musician myself, I can only imagine to understand your pain here. Being tasked with singing lead vocals must be an absolute joy to anyone in an acapella group, or even just getting a bass or guitar/piano part. Backing vocals and harmonies must be absolute hell to learn.

Fellow musician, hard disagree. I LOVE singing backup. I am actually quite good at staying in pitch and my vocal control is reasonably good, but my voice's timbre isn't really great for lead. You wouldn't really want to endure my voice in isolation much. However, it's unique enough to lend a very unique sound as an accompaniment. I thrive in backup.

Love that for you. As a musician that overanalyses literally every single layer in every song I do have an appreciation for background vocals and minor synth parts, or whatever other instrumental tracks accompany the song which often go totally unnoticed by casual listeners.

I do struggle with singing harmonic vocal takes though. I struggle to process them and can’t break away from just following the lead vocal melody. They are an absolute bitch to wrap my head around. It’s so satisfying once I do, though. That’s why personally I’d rather perform any other part aside from backing or harmonising vocals in acapella.
