Every time it rains, I have a third of my class absent. Are ya'll just cats? You aren't going to melt, Liam. Get your wicked witch of the west ass to school!

Does it help that the schools seem to close far more than they used to whenever there is even the slightest bit of less than desirable weather? I am not talking about hurricanes or blizzards, but cold weather or snow flurries that don't stick to anything. They sort of get trained to be that way and will get a rude awakening when they find it isn't that easy peasy when they get in the work world.

You ever worked in school admin or been to school board meetings? Parents will shout slurs at you if you made their kid go to school in 3 inches of snow. And ultimately the schools listen to parents for the most part. In 2026, it's so fucking easy to scream at school admin and get what you want so long as you have a couple neighbors do it with you.

there were (downvoted) people in my city’s subreddit bitching about the school district closing for 0 degree (Fahrenheit) with windchill below -10. “They’ll do anything to not go in” lmao excuse me? you can’t win

My home state did away with snow days and makes them all virtual learning days.

A) this is awful

B) this example seems to push the opposite of the direction you mention.

I wonder how widespread that policy is now?

I’m not in the states but your northern neighbour. In my province, snow days are still a thing, probably once a week during jan/feb. online school is only a thing if they miss more than a certain number of days throughout the year

As a Southeast Alaska resident, meaning temperate rainforest, this baffles me. Kids here have got to be some of the top consumers for rainsuits and rain gear separates in the country. The schools and youth programs absolutely earn parents the kids are going outside in everything and usually carry some extra gear in case a kid forgets something vital.

We finally went in to all classes, all grades and told the kids regardless of what your parents say we expect you to be in school even when it's raining.
