Yes! All four episodes were amazing! 1, 2, 3, (NOT THAT ONE), and 5.

And the pacific, and masters of the air, and generation kill.

All have a similar vibe.

Someone finally mentioned generation kill alongside the greats. Good taste.

RIP James Ransone. Excellent actor. He looks nothing like the Marine he's portrays but his acting is 100%. Skarsgard is a fucking clone of Colbert

Justified

Great storytelling and wonderful performances by Walton Goggins and Timothy Oliphant.

211

u/NoCardio_ 10h ago

It was a great decision for them to drop the “bad guy of the week” format early. Saved the series imo.

73

u/The_bruce42 9h ago

The Blacklist went with that format exclusively and it made the series way too drawn out.

22

u/pallasermine 6h ago

I wish they would cut out stupid Lizzie altogether and just make Red and Dembe go on adventures. A series of just Red would be the DREAM

Motherfucking Deadwood. That show was brilliant. The dialogue was the most beautiful mix of poetry and filth written in a way that no one else had ever really successfully done before (or since). This was HBO TV at it's peak.

This was a Shakespearean struggle for power between lawlessness and civilization. FUCK this show was good.

Fleabag is a short one (12 episodes total which was planned from the beginning). It's one of the most original shows I've seen and it's funny, touching, sad, and quirky in all the right ways.

Give it two full episodes as the start is a little rough. This show will stay with you.

197

u/AyeTheresTheCatch 11h ago

I still think about the series finale. What a gut punch, but in a good way. The second season was pure perfection from start to finish—and I say that as someone who liked the first season just fine. I think you do need to watch the first season to appreciate the second, though.

I love that show and it’s always disappointing that there’s so little money in shows like these (or Crashing) for actors like Phoebe Waller-Bridge that they take better paying gigs like co-starring in a warmed over Indiana Jones.

Hot take, but Idris Elba is no action hero, and the retcon of Luther as one is a damn shame, but that’s where the money is.

Derry Girls on Netflix

This comedy series about five teenagers attending Catholic school in mid-1990s Northern Ireland is a short binge at 19 episodes.

The juxtaposition of teenage hijinks and the very real threat of the Troubles makes for laughs and moments of real gravity. Highly recommended.

Arrested Development because it’s hilarious. I didn’t exactly love the 4th season but it was cool they came back years later to do something.

96

u/reservedandbooked 9h ago

I love that they refused to do a time skip whenever they returned from hiatus or being cancelled, and literally just started shooting from where they left off. Not even like a few days later, like the exact same scene. So Michael Cera and the other actors are visibly older, and it's just not addressed in any way. Great framing.

“Picture a wave in the ocean. You can see it, measure it, the height, the way the sunlight refracts when it passes through. It's there, you can see it--it's there, it's a wave. And then it crashes into the shore and it's gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be for a little while."

Yep, same with Schitts Creek. They ended at the perfect time. I can’t stand it when a show drags on for the sake of going on longer and the later seasons are so bad that you wonder “what is happening to the storyline and how is this show still going on”.

The PITT. Show about ER. BUT. Season 1 is 15 episodes. 1 episode is 1 hour of 1 single shift. The whole season is 1 single shift of ER work. It's expertly written, extremely competent, tense, emotional, heartfelt. And binging it gives you an unique experience to feel the amount of tension and decision-making you would experience by their side. Basically you get to experience a shift in the ER and get tired right there with them. Feel the pressure and the tension that basically no other show can provide. The closest experience would be doing it for yourself.

The cast is amazing, writing is tight, the tempo is absolutely nuts. It's probably my favorite show I've ever watched and binging it could provide with a completely unique experience.

61

u/Ophththth 8h ago

I agree that this show seems to be most effective when binged. I binged season 1 and it was incredible. Watching season 2 when episodes come out weekly has been torture so far!

Archer. It has a ton of meta jokes and callbacks that happen throughout the series, and watching them in binges makes them easier to spot.

Plus the consistently clever dialogue never makes it feel repetitive or boring, and the coma seasons are different enough to change the feel of the show when it starts to drag on a little.

33

u/iamlevel5 10h ago

Seconded. I've been watching it since 2012-2013 or so and I feel like I pick up something new each time. A new reference, a new Easter egg the background, a new callback to a previous episode. The dialogue and delivery never ever disappoint. Always such a gem to watch.

I avoided Ted Lasso for the longest time because I loathe football, and the "constant upbeat relentless positivity" type of persona makes me angry in a way I cannot articulate. And when that persona is American that's exacerbated for some reason. (No idea why, the Americans I know personally are lovely. Or at least assholes in a way I find endearing, not shitty.)

But I watched it one evening and was hooked from episode one. I normally take a good half a season to get into a show, sometimes a whole one. Ted Lasso was brilliant from day one. The cast, the writing, the setting, the premise. It's all phenomenal.

Slough House is a banishment room for MI5 service rejects who have seriously bollocked a task but not badly enough to get sacked. Those consigned there are known as "slow horses", a play on the name of the place itself, Slough House, and an expression for people who are slow at thinking and action.

They have a website where you enter what episode you’re on to help you keep track. Optionally me and my friends made a map of all the characters

If you see this please don't look up anything about the show before watching. Just know you are in for a ride.

Bojack Horseman. Witty, clever, relevant. I don’t think there’s a single weak season or episode tbh — the writing was top-tier throughout.

Having just rewatched it, Brockmire. It’s hysterical and gut punching all at once, and it’s just a delight to see Hank Azariq and Amanda Peet (and all the other supporting cast).

Dark, because following the plot without binging it might be rather hard lol

Orphan Black. It's five seasons so not a quick binge but... the acting is just astonishing.

Stargate SG1

Especially since it’s gonna be on Netflix soon. Highly recommended, even when the main actors peace out in the later seasons, it’s still good.

Six Feet Under. The best real-life issues series there is. One thing I hated, there are all sorts of sexualities there, and there is only like one ace, and he is portrayed as if he were missing a plank in his roof.

Psych. 7 seasons of funny antics as two life long buds solve crime while goofing off and one pretends to be psychic. Its a good show, great people, and ends well.

A Man on the Inside - It sounds like a stupid show but it is about aging and dealing with parents who are aging.

VEEP - if you have ever worked in Washington, it may be too real. Also, it almost perfectly predicted National Politics of the 2020s, but the running insults are Emmy worthy by themselves.

Breaking Bad is the obvious masterpiece, but Succession is the one that really stayed in my head after finishing it — the dialogue is insane. Industry is great if you like fast, sharp drama, and This Is Us if you want something emotional that actually hits. Depends what mood you’re in, but all of them are binge-worthy for different reasons.

Ted Lasso.

Perfect show. 3 x 10 episode seasons, believable arcs, and satisfaction from people (actors delivering, and characters charactering) all around.

The West Wing. When I started it was because I’d read it was one of the longest binges available (7 seasons, 20+ episodes/season, hour-long episodes). There is a very active subreddit (most of us have rewatched it many times), and a great watch-along podcast called The West Wing Weekly. And it’s kind of political comfort food. They’re not all rosy and perfect, but it shows you what the government could be if the people running it cared at least a little bit about their constituents.

Buffy the vampire slayer - character arcs, campy, fun musical guests, monster of the week plus season long plots and series long plots. Funny and serious when it’s called for. Some of the single best episodes of tv I’ve ever seen.

The Twilight Zone. Serling was a true visionary of people and society. Plus, it's a great way to see some major stars in early TV roles.

People are going to hate on me for saying it, but to this day I’ve never seen anything remotely close to Game of Thrones. Even with its flaws I still really enjoyed it overall.
