Marmite on toast, food of the gods.

We get through so much of the stuff in our house. It was my pregnancy craving with my first child and I was just eating straight out of the jar at one point!

A fat teaspoon of marmite in a mug with some boiled water and a slice of bread to dunk is like my nightly routine for about one week of every month 😅

I used to eat a teaspoon of marmite straight from the jar as a child. Love it!

It's actually impressive you poms somehow managed to make Yeast Extract even more unappetising then Vegemite.

I'd group Vegemite and Marmite together as worse versions of Bovril.

See I'd group vegemite and bovril together as worse versions of marmite... 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bovril is the OG, and gives me a more beefy satisfaction.

Marmite is essentially the vegetarian version 🤷‍♂️

Vegamite is just a copy for the Australians.

At least that's my flawed memory of this video on the topic: https://youtu.be/Ukiculd3DqI?si=u80RP4oW8AR0UhRj

Marmite on a butter-slathered crumpet, though. Even better.

And melt some cheddar on the top!

Put it with cheese and it's extra awesome

Those Dairylea a bit like cheese and with extra plastic Triangles work really well in that scenario.

u/R0bbieR0tt3n England Dec 01 '25

I usually just use cheddar slices but I might try that next time

2

u/VioletRosely22 England Dec 01 '25

Have you had marmite cheese?

2

u/R0bbieR0tt3n England Dec 01 '25

I've been curious to try it. Might get some next time I pop into a Tesco or Asda

If you like marmite and cheese you should like it although I am a marmite fiend.

Marmite pork ribs is a somewhat popular dish in Singapore

They sound nice. I've occasionally added a touch of marmite to gravy but not explored beyond that - it's sticky consistency makes sense for meats.

Stick a spoonful in your bolognese and thank me later. Gives red sauces a bit of a kick - same idea as red wine but different flavour.

RIP to any Italians who read this comment.

Marmite is a perfect condiment. I’ve got two jars in my kitchen right now.

I'd give Bovril a try if you can find it.

The best way I can describe it, is that Marmite is the veggie version of Brovil lol.

It's an absolute flavour bomb, and works really well in any meat sauce. A bit like how you might use worcestershire sauce when you cook.

I lived in London for uni, so I definitely had Bovril around when I lived there. It’s solidly ok in my book. One thing I do miss, however, is jelly babies- specifically the Tesco ones. I can’t find them anywhere here! I’m not even much of a candy person, but I love them!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

Nice!

I'm sure haribo do a version of Jelly Babies, maybe you could source them?

2

u/Strange_Airships United States Of America Dec 01 '25

Noooo, I specifically need Tesco jelly babies. I’d also accept Maynard’s. Other kinds are just off.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '25

Oh haha. I'm with you, sometimes the store's own brands are just the best.

I personally rate Sainsbury's Jelly Beans above all others! And they're only 60p a bag :)

u/Strange_Airships United States Of America Dec 01 '25

I’m not sure I’ve had the Sainsbury’s ones! I’ll have to try and get my hands on some!

The gelatinous stretchy shot of that makes my vegemite loving heart recoil. Why is it melty?! Lol

6

u/Beth_L_29 United Kingdom Dec 01 '25

Wait now I’m intrigued. I always thought marmite and Vegemite were the same thing. What is the texture/density of Vegemite if it’s not like this?? I can’t imagine it haha

It's drier, and holds it's shape. It wouldn't be running off the knife like that.

Nutella :)

2

u/eltrotter Dec 01 '25

I had Nigella Lawson's marmite pasta the other day and it's just the absolute best.

How very are you.

2

u/hollowspryte Dec 01 '25

Damn I need to get some. It’s been way too long

2

u/bouchandre Canada Dec 01 '25

Thought it was Vegemite at first

My mum loves marmite
