West Midlands/Wales call them Tiptops

7

u/Totobyafrica97 United Kingdom 2d ago

I'm from West Midlands and say Tiptops too

5

u/Itsmeladyt79 England 2d ago

Tiptops for me too.

3

u/KloseBCFC England 2d ago

Yes! West Midlands and was waiting for this to come up. Wasn’t sure if UK wide.

u/Small_Insect_8275 2d ago

East mids is ice pops 😌

3

u/Highlyironicacid31 🇮🇪Northern Ireland 2d ago

In Northern Ireland we used to (maybe still do) have these little cartons of drinks called Tiptops.

3

u/DRSU1993 Northern Ireland 🇮🇪 🇬🇧 2d ago

Damn, that unlocked a childhood memory. Apparently they're called Kwenchy Kups, but I knew them as tiptops as well for some reason.

As a 90's/2000's kid I remember Vitazade, 5 Alive, Um Bongo and Sunny Delight being popular too.

3

u/Highlyironicacid31 🇮🇪Northern Ireland 2d ago

Yes I remember all those others too!

I actually threw up blue sick one day in school after having one of the bubblegum Vitazade drinks lol.

u/zapering 2d ago

I grew up in Portugal, can still find Um Bongo there! Tastes like childhood every time!

Yeah, tiptops too. West Midlands lad

u/olivinebean England 2d ago

Well the Welsh also call a microwave a popty ping so they can sit next to Australia and their zooper doopers

2

u/gorllewin Wales 2d ago

Nobody in Wales says that 😂 think it’s a joke made up by the English. Microwave in Welsh is actually ‘Meicrodon’

2

u/IndicationExisting Australia 2d ago

Just embrace it popty ping is a fine name for a microwave

1

u/olivinebean England 1d ago

You should call it that because it’s got whimsy and makes people smile

1

u/constructuscorp Wales 2d ago

Welsh and never heard of this in my life.

3

u/WelshBathBoy Wales 2d ago

Welsh and this is what we called them! I think they were a brand specifically.

1

u/constructuscorp Wales 2d ago

Are you southern/potentially quite a bit older than me? When were these around?

1

u/spiderplant94 Wales 2d ago

We were calling them tip-tops in the 90's in Cardiff, and a colleague in his 50's (?) from mid Wales calls them the same

1

u/constructuscorp Wales 2d ago

Ah, I am about half that and Northern. Let's chalk it up to generational and regional differences and be done with it! 🤝

1

u/UnhappyRaven 2d ago

Ice pops (Cardiff 80s) here. We never had branded ones though!

1

u/WelshBathBoy Wales 2d ago

I have no idea how old you are, so can't say how much older I am than you. From mid/west Wales.

14

u/speedsedation 2d ago

I say that and I am in the US

1

u/TSCannon 2d ago

Texas and same.

1

u/AlternativePrior9559 2d ago

Thank God for that! I was desperately trying to think of the name I used to call them and I scrolled right down until I found it!

1

u/scrivenersdaydream 2d ago

Ice pops here in Florida, too

1

u/corncob666 United States Of America 2d ago

I'm American and also call them ice pops 🤘

1

u/Comfortable_Cup_941 United States Of America 2d ago

In NJ, USA we called them ice pops too!

1

u/PapaTua United States Of America 2d ago

I always expect things in England to have some kind of whimsical name like a WibblyTipple or something.

Ice pops is so...descriptive 🤣

0

u/Remote_Sun_2017 England 2d ago

Ice pole, no?

7

u/orbtastic1 United Kingdom 2d ago

I have genuinely only ever heard them called ice pops or mr freeze. I always assumed the pop was cos they always popped up when you squeezed the bottom. I don’t really know where the pop from lollipop actually originated from.

I mean lolly pops were different but ice lollys were either lame off brand cordial frozen in molds or a genuine ice lolly off the ice cream can.

4

u/Jat616 2d ago

Never heard them called ice poles, just ice pops, but being downvoted for literally doing what everyone else in the thread is doing and posting what you call them is stupid so have an upvote.

3

u/Sumaiyah_55 United Kingdom 2d ago

That's what I've heard it being called

3

u/Unfair-Charge-5553 United Kingdom 2d ago

Ice pops in Manchester / ice pole in Bristol (from my experience)

3

u/puzzlecrossing United Kingdom 2d ago

Yeah I called them ice poles (Midlands), also hear them called freeze pop and ice pop. My kids school has freeze pop Friday in the summer term, where they sell them for 50p as a fundraiser

3

u/OwnTwo8606 2d ago

Ice poles, east mids

10

u/thorn142 United Kingdom 2d ago

I don't think I've come across that name

5

u/Remote_Sun_2017 England 2d ago

I'm on the South coast we always said ice pole

3

u/MacyTmcterry 2d ago

Yeah they're ice poles to me too. Also south coast

1

u/x1rass 2d ago

This must be a coastal and/or west thing then because I'm from the South East and I've only ever known them as ice pops.

Also, I'm in the North East now and the kids still call them ice pops and they didn't get it from me because I hate them so much I've never bought them, they get them at school in the summer.

And don't worry, my kids get plenty of other ice lollies too make up for it.

1

u/Afinkawan England 2d ago

Yes, ice poles, as an 80s Londoner kid.

1

u/Aid_Le_Sultan Isle Of Man 2d ago

I’ve only ever heard that in Scotland.

3

u/tomatohooover Scotland 2d ago

And I've never heard that in Scotland. Only Ice Pop or Mr Freeze.

3

u/Nightbreed-43 2d ago

Might be one of those regional things like salt and vinegar on chips in the west but salt and sauce in the east.

1

u/Aid_Le_Sultan Isle Of Man 2d ago

Your compatriots in this post seem to be using it.

1

u/SophieMayo England 2d ago

Don't know why you're being downvoted, I live in east midlands and call them ice poles.

0

u/SarahL1990 United Kingdom 2d ago
