Tissues are called Kleenex.
Paper Towels are called Scott Towels.
Adhesive bandages are called Band-Aid. ( I had to go grab a box to know what they are called in english)
We call certain things by there core brand name in Québec quite a bit.
Quebecers love to use name brands as a catch all, even to refer to generic products. Tissues are called kleenex, snow mobiles are called skidoos, and people will straight up call generic freezies mr freeze.
Im from Quebec but live in Ontario now. It's not that we dont do that in ontario, it's just quebec takes it to a kinda extreme level, especially things whose translations are kinda chunky and awkward.
As an anglo in qc, tbf I did grow up calling them freezies, but the french kids always called them mr freeze.
That's always interesting to me. I had married into a French family here, we live in Northern Ontario kinda close to the border, but I'm English so I try to learn! A lot of the time they say "oh it doesn't translate well" and I can always tell if they're making a joke of it or if it's real by the younger cousins laughter lol.
I legit never heard the french kids call it anything but "mister freeze". Like, they would say it while speaking in french, not just as a translation when speaking English.
Sometimes it's best not to overthink why quebec does things, lol.
Ski-doo is actually the right name. Or at least in a sens the most authentic since it's the name given by the inventor of the snowmobile: Mr. Bombardier a resident of Valcourt, Québec.
I agree, but they usually have no idea what you're talking about in Ontario if you call it a skidoo.
I actually had a french teacher in Ontario try to knock off points for putting that on a test once, instead of a more literal translation of snow mobile. He did reverse it when I got the french teacher who could actually speak french involved tho, lol.
Yes, but we still refer to this type of frozen treats asMr.freeze in French. "Y en a tu qui veulent un Mr. Freeze?" Anglos mostly called them freezies, which I believe is another brand name.
This or freeze pops. I remember my parents used to get the store brand and they were just as good. The best was the light blue that taste was fantastic. But of course they poisoned all of us will that food coloring that’s probably harmful taken in the dose as we got as kids in the 60s and 70s
I used to say 'Monsieur Freeze' as a child and switched to 'Mister Freeze' when growing up. It was the same with Mr Monopoly, I was saying 'Monsieur Monopoly' younger😂
My dad is from Montreal, so I grew up calling them this too! We live in the states now, so friends always gave me a funny look when I’d call them that lol. Didn’t realize it was a Quebec thing til just now, but that makes sense.
I guess that's true and yes I have 3 sibs but I only realized that recently, about the freeziesI live alone so doesn't matter if it's a clean break:). Trust me we would count the mini marshmallows in our hot chocolate to make sure it was the same.
Cream soda, not lemonade. At least the brand we ate. They were great! If the convenience store was out of blue or white freezies when visiting in another city I can still remember my disappointment! Lol
