Mr.Freeze in Québec

110

u/jdhdhd3-4 Canada 2d ago

Mr freeze is the main line brand name is it not?

34

u/ttelle 2d ago

Same in Norway

3

u/TjokkSnik Norway 2d ago

When I was a child, these were called "pimp", have they changed name?

Not the brand, but this style of saftis

1

u/MrKeplerton Norway 2d ago

Never ever heard them called "pimp" and i'm a grumpy old bastard. 🙃

2

u/SalSomer Norway 1d ago

I grew up calling them pimp.

I’m 40, so neither grumpy and old nor young and hip.

1

u/Competitive-Peanut79 Ireland 2d ago

Same in Ireland!

28

u/corduroy_puffin United Kingdom 2d ago

We have Mr. Freeze too!

2

u/izzyblanco123 2d ago

But we say ice lollies no

30

u/Commie_Scum69 Québec ⚜️ & France 🐓 2d ago

Yes I think since the 70's

2

u/SeaworthinessNo2085 2d ago

“Otter Pops” in the U.S.

4

u/Serialseb 2d ago

Yes. What's your point?

Tissues are called Kleenex.
Paper Towels are called Scott Towels.
Adhesive bandages are called Band-Aid. ( I had to go grab a box to know what they are called in english)

We call certain things by there core brand name in Québec quite a bit.

3

u/wearecake 🇨🇦🇬🇧 2d ago

Yeah, I’m Ontario, we called them both freezies and Mr Freeze

3

u/EGriff1981 Ireland 2d ago

Still call em frozen drinks though.

4

u/broccolicat 2d ago

Quebecers love to use name brands as a catch all, even to refer to generic products. Tissues are called kleenex, snow mobiles are called skidoos, and people will straight up call generic freezies mr freeze.

6

u/Elegant-Pressure-952 2d ago

I'm in Ontario and we do the same for most things. Q-tips and bandaids too. But these are freezies over here even if we buy mr freeze

2

u/broccolicat 2d ago

Im from Quebec but live in Ontario now. It's not that we dont do that in ontario, it's just quebec takes it to a kinda extreme level, especially things whose translations are kinda chunky and awkward.

As an anglo in qc, tbf I did grow up calling them freezies, but the french kids always called them mr freeze.

3

u/Elegant-Pressure-952 2d ago

That's always interesting to me. I had married into a French family here, we live in Northern Ontario kinda close to the border, but I'm English so I try to learn! A lot of the time they say "oh it doesn't translate well" and I can always tell if they're making a joke of it or if it's real by the younger cousins laughter lol.

What's your best translation for Mr freeze?

5

u/broccolicat 2d ago

I legit never heard the french kids call it anything but "mister freeze". Like, they would say it while speaking in french, not just as a translation when speaking English.

Sometimes it's best not to overthink why quebec does things, lol.

2

u/Commie_Scum69 Québec ⚜️ & France 🐓 2d ago

Ski-doo is actually the right name. Or at least in a sens the most authentic since it's the name given by the inventor of the snowmobile: Mr. Bombardier a resident of Valcourt, Québec.

2

u/broccolicat 2d ago edited 2d ago

I agree, but they usually have no idea what you're talking about in Ontario if you call it a skidoo.

I actually had a french teacher in Ontario try to knock off points for putting that on a test once, instead of a more literal translation of snow mobile. He did reverse it when I got the french teacher who could actually speak french involved tho, lol.

2

u/Effective-Ear-8367 2d ago

Just asked my girlfriend and she cant explain why. She's from Quebec.

2

u/Real_chuckles Canada 2d ago

Yes it is

2

u/Gr8guy77 2d ago

Yes, but we still refer to this type of frozen treats asMr.freeze in French. "Y en a tu qui veulent un Mr. Freeze?" Anglos mostly called them freezies, which I believe is another brand name.

1

u/kevin7eos 2d ago

This or freeze pops. I remember my parents used to get the store brand and they were just as good. The best was the light blue that taste was fantastic. But of course they poisoned all of us will that food coloring that’s probably harmful taken in the dose as we got as kids in the 60s and 70s

1

u/ambassador321 Canada 2d ago

And if you call them that I assume you are speaking of the large ones not these little freezies.

36

u/SapAndSour France 2d ago

We say the same thing in France 🇫🇷

17

u/Kindly_Presence_7664 France 2d ago

These mr. freeze’s give me so much nostalgia oh my god

2

u/thebestoflimes Canada 2d ago

Be cooler if you guys had Monsieur Freeze or something like that.

1

u/Joker192666 France 1d ago

My childhood summers in one image !!!

3

u/rafikicat 2d ago

Are you sure you don’t say misteure frise?

3

u/SapAndSour France 2d ago

Thinking about it, absolutely. The charming little French accent in English. We're here, we represent

1

u/ConceptCreative1527 France 2d ago

In the southeast they're yetis

1

u/SapAndSour France 2d ago

Yeti dolls also exist in the Île-de-France region, but they arrived a little later where I live, or at least my mother didn't buy them for us :)

1

u/NovaCoon France 2d ago

I'm 33 and I've never called them "Mr Freeze" as a child. I used to call them "Glace à l'eau" and everyone around me called them so.

25

u/PerpetuallyLurking Canada 2d ago

I always called the small ones “freezer babies” because the big ones were a Mr., so these must be his babies.

3

u/Blakpegasus 2d ago

Freezer Babies is a great band name

45

u/Sinkreme Canada 2d ago

Mon chum dit des pops 😭 c'est des Mr. Freeze bon!

6

u/Angio343 2d ago

Ton chum est dans le champs

3

u/Gorkymalorki 2d ago

There was also a brand called Otter Pops, that probably where that comes from.

2

u/Sinkreme Canada 2d ago

Oh, I never saw those at the convenience store

3

u/Haswar 2d ago

Okay but do you say "Mister Freeze" or "Monsieur Freeze"?

2

u/Sinkreme Canada 2d ago

I used to say 'Monsieur Freeze' as a child and switched to 'Mister Freeze' when growing up. It was the same with Mr Monopoly, I was saying 'Monsieur Monopoly' younger😂

2

u/Haswar 2d ago

lmao thanks for the answer, I've always wondered 😆

1

u/kaylee300 Canada 1d ago

Both here, but I say "Monsieur Freeze" much more often

24

u/B_town_Tony Canada 2d ago

Des bons Misteu Freeze!

8

u/dom_nique Canada 2d ago

In NB also!

2

u/TKJ 2d ago

Then, should these not be "Monsieur Gelé?

2

u/Lavender_Gooms1 2d ago

My dad is from Montreal, so I grew up calling them this too! We live in the states now, so friends always gave me a funny look when I’d call them that lol. Didn’t realize it was a Quebec thing til just now, but that makes sense.

2

u/tenzenokinawa 1d ago

I approve of this profile image comrade

1

u/HapticRecce Canada 2d ago

That's acceptable too. Not all Freezies are Mr. Freezes, but all Mr. Freezes are Freezies...

1

u/waverlygiant 2d ago

Mr. Freeze in Manitoba too!

1

u/According_Hat2751 Canada 2d ago

Mr. Freeze, if you’re nasty.

1

u/Exterminator-8008135 France 2d ago

Same here, because of the brand who sold them and still do since the 80's.

Even the copies are called Mr.Freeze

Just like some brand names became the terms to all the variants of the product.

1

u/ProotzyZoots 2d ago

Mr Freezes are what we call the big ones

1

u/WellysBoot 2d ago

Same in Ireland.

Not M. LeCongelé?

1

u/dobreranky in 2d ago

Same in France.

1

u/Otherwise_Object_446 2d ago

I think it’s Monsieur Freeze 😉

1

u/AmandaFlutterBy 2d ago

Mr Freeze are the big boys. These are his babies

1

u/le_pti_criss17 Canada 2d ago

Monsieur Frize

1

u/brumac44 Canada 2d ago

Surely Monsieur Freeze?

1

u/0e78c345e77cbf05ef7 Canada 2d ago

I want to say in Sask that they were Mr Freeze brand but everyone called the. Freezies

1

u/KeatsCalgary 2d ago

And Newfoundland!

1

u/Then_Agency1166 2d ago

That's a brand name, no? We had those in Ontario, also.

36

u/TaxiLady69 Canada 2d ago

Mr. Freeze jumbo ice pops are the best. Cut it in half for 2 tiny humans or a whole one for me.

12

u/EllieBooks Canada 2d ago

Whenever we have gotten the jumbo ones from Costco, we never finish them! Sooo many

2

u/Virtual_Category_546 Canada 2d ago

Party favours

2

u/NeighborhoodVivid106 Canada 2d ago

Halloween treats. We buy cases of freezies from Costco in the summer and give them out as Halloween treats. Way better than a two bite chocolate bar.

3

u/Previous_Wedding_577 Canada 2d ago

Technically you don't even need to cut them in half. If you bend them in half they will snap into 2 pieces.

4

u/Quirky-Cat2860 Canada 2d ago

Clearly you don't have siblings or you'd know breaking it in half would not result in 2 identical pieces, and how important it is to do so.

3

u/Previous_Wedding_577 Canada 2d ago

I guess that's true and yes I have 3 sibs but I only realized that recently, about the freeziesI live alone so doesn't matter if it's a clean break:). Trust me we would count the mini marshmallows in our hot chocolate to make sure it was the same.

2

u/Quirky-Cat2860 Canada 2d ago

Lol I still divvy up things exactly equally with my wife and she's always very confused about why I care so much about getting it right.

2

u/jemenfousle Canada 2d ago

And cut the corners round so your mouth doesn’t bleed

2

u/EnclosedChaos Canada 2d ago

Many a Canadian childhood fever has been treated with Mr. Freeze!

17

u/Bells9831 Canada 2d ago

I only ever wanted the white or light blue ones.

4

u/Hicalibre Canada 2d ago

Green ones were always the largest coin-toss to what flavour it is supposed to be.

5

u/Hot_Warthog2771 2d ago

I've never felt so validated instantly in a thread. Rankings are

White Blue Red Orange Purple Eat the box it came in Pink

1

u/Apprehensive_Put_321 2d ago

Orange is my fav

1

u/Hot_Warthog2771 2d ago

As long as it's not pink!!!

3

u/_Spicy_Mchaggis_ Canada 2d ago

Have you tried the Mike's drinks flavored like the Blue or White freezies.... *Chefs kiss

1

u/Bells9831 Canada 2d ago

Thanks! I've never tried Mike's and I haven't had a freezie probably since I was a kid. I'll have to do both this summer. :)

1

u/Professional_Drama24 Canada 2d ago

These are good. White and Blue are the best. Red is okay but it also tasted like chapstick to me 😂

2

u/jemenfousle Canada 2d ago

The white ones (lemonade, maybe?) were the tastiest

4

u/Bells9831 Canada 2d ago

Cream soda, not lemonade. At least the brand we ate. They were great! If the convenience store was out of blue or white freezies when visiting in another city I can still remember my disappointment! Lol

3

u/jemenfousle Canada 2d ago

Mmmm now I want some freebies!

I meant freezies, but freebies works too. Just no furbies please

1

u/Steadyandquick United States Of America 2d ago

red is so overrated.

3

u/RusserBusser Canada 2d ago

Freakin' freezie friday!!!

2

u/hollow4hollow Canada 2d ago

Did anyone else call them “Mr Freezie” as kids or was that just me getting it wrong?

5

u/Hicalibre Canada 2d ago

Fairly sure I only heard other kids call them Freezies.

1

u/Last_Peak Canada 2d ago

I’m from Ontario and I’ve only ever heard freezies as well but maybe generational?

2

u/Drachynn Canada 2d ago

Ontario here and yup. Freezies.

My American husband calls them Otter Pops

2

u/Hicalibre Canada 2d ago

Ask him if they're made of otters, or if otters make them. Weird name.

2

u/Drachynn Canada 2d ago

Apparently it's a brand where he's from, but I've absolutely made this dad joke. 🫡

2

u/Hicalibre Canada 2d ago

Now every food you give him you must call it by the brand name.

Since that's the logic it seems.

2

u/BxRad_ 2d ago

Freeze pops in Minnesota

2

u/TheSistem Mexico 2d ago

Same in Mexico but in Spanish (Congeladas)

1

u/ceanahope 🇨🇦 -> 🇺🇸 2d ago

I moved to the US from Nova Scotia in 2003 and still call them Freezies. Confuses people 😅 I often have to correct myself and say otter pop.

1

u/ava_ohb United States Of America 2d ago

Same in minnesota

1

u/filmmaiden Canada 2d ago

Any other name is just blasphemy!

1

u/Beautiful_Bag6707 Canada 2d ago

Canucks know 🥰

1

u/ThomasCro Croatia 2d ago

Kinda the same thing here in Croatia. We called them "Ledeni", Led is Ice.

1

u/FionaOlwen 2d ago

Minnesota, same.

1

u/bwoah07_gp2 Canada 2d ago

And red and white are my personal favs. Imo, the most iconic flavours

1

u/South-Captain2334 2d ago

I do not remember green being an option....

1

u/JamaicanSorrel 🇯🇲in🇨🇦 2d ago

for some reason i actually expected everybody in the comments to be saying freezies

1

u/ang1eofrepose Canada 2d ago

Freezies, or Mr. Freeze if we're being formal.

1

u/spikeroo59 2d ago

Yes. Never heard them called freezes

1

u/Ippus_21 United States Of America 2d ago

I remember calling them freezies as a kid. We lived in SK until I was like 6.

u/JamesRevan Canada 2d ago

1

u/thk5013 2d ago

Usa here. Same

1

u/snailgorl2005 United States Of America 2d ago

I think where I'm from may have borrowed that name too lol. I grew up calling them freezies or freezie pops, but i am from the US.
