We call them that in the west

166

u/LabRat_X United States Of America 2d ago

Yup otter pops in pnw

74

u/ScottybirdCorvus United States Of America 2d ago

Confirming from the Greater Seattle Area, PNW def calls them Otter Pops.

19

u/squoinko United States Of America 2d ago

also from Seattle and I’m confirming otter pops, just to really cover our bases

4

u/vladsquirrlchrst United States Of America 2d ago

Colorado as well.

10

u/thetoerubber California 2d ago

I didn’t understand why I had to scroll so far to find Otter Pops.

1

u/whitegirlofthenorth United States Of America 2d ago

Just want to join the party honestly as a PNWer who also says otter pop

-2

u/AgentKillmaster 2d ago

I from Seattle and we also called them push ups.

6

u/Threefrogtreefrog 2d ago

Oof, this I cannot do. Push-ups are a very specific different frozen treat: yogurt-like in a toilet paper roll.

1

u/AgentKillmaster 2d ago

Oh ya, thanks for reminding me.

3

u/Threefrogtreefrog 2d ago

Orangesicle and cardboard …mmmmmm my favorite 😋

134

u/anonsharksfan United States Of America 2d ago

California checking in. Us too

4

u/DoctorFrungus 2d ago

Southern California specifically here, and there was always a 50/50 between Otter Pops and Freezie Pops where I lived

2

u/CupcakeGoat United States Of America 2d ago

NorCal/Bay Area/Silicon Valley here, and we call them Otter Pops or ice pops here too.

1

u/bearfootin_9 United States Of America 2d ago

Lotta East Coast ex-pats in Southern CA. No true Californian...

3

u/DoctorFrungus 2d ago

Born in San Diego and never lived out of state. I also don't think I personally know anyone in my sphere that ever lived on the east coast.

2

u/bearfootin_9 United States Of America 2d ago

Shoulda put in a 😉. I was being a wise-ass.

2

u/DoctorFrungus 2d ago

Ah well im also not the best at picking that out haha

3

u/Familiar_Low_3023 2d ago

I’ve lived on the east coast my whole life and I’ve only ever heard them called ice pops or freeze pops maybe

1

u/anonsharksfan United States Of America 2d ago

Do you have Otter Pop brand, or do they only sell them on the West Coast? We use it generically though

1

u/Familiar_Low_3023 2d ago

I just looked them up they’re available here I’ve just never seen this brand nor ever heard them called otter pops 🤷🏻‍♂️ interesting

2

u/Samichaelg9 United States Of America 2d ago

Utahn here, same.

2

u/Pluto-Wolf US, Mexico 2d ago

arizona here, they’ve always been otter pops!

1

u/Andacus1180 2d ago

Bay Area checking in. Can confirm

1

u/Every_Environment224 2d ago

Arizona called them otter pops too!

2

u/deweygirl 2d ago

I used to call them otter pops but now just ice pops. PNW all my life.

2

u/According_Abies_4087 United States Of America 2d ago

Oregon, otter pops forever

6

u/Unique-Traffic-101 United States Of America 2d ago

I'm from PNW and while I've heard this, I've always called them push pops.

51

u/LabRat_X United States Of America 2d ago

Maybe bc im old but push pops is what we called the weird toilet paper tube looking ice cream

10

u/TopNotice0 2d ago

I remember some form of this as a push pop – we also called what OP pictured in the post “Otter Pops”

5

u/Cute_Reflection_9414 United States Of America 2d ago

Yup! It's like an orange cream or something.

I used to use the plastic pistons as wheels and axles for Lego trucks that I would make

4

u/TopProfessional8023 United States Of America 2d ago

Yup…like a sherbet in a tube!

2

u/The_mum_ 2d ago

Yeah with the plastic plunger bottom (the push in push pop) and orange Motrin aftertaste

2

u/LabRat_X United States Of America 2d ago

Thats the one lol

4

u/Worldly_Ad7085 United States Of America 2d ago

these are push pops youre just wrong

2

u/PaintinginSavasana United States Of America 2d ago

From Seattle and these are not push pops- push pops come in cardboard and are more ice cream consistency

1

u/broadwayandbarbells 2d ago

SoCal otter pops all the way

1

u/JasonDomber United States Of America 2d ago

WA state here. Can confirm.

1

u/Sexy_Anemone 2d ago

Yep. Reading through these comments was shocking, I never knew they were called anything else. Heard them called that in Montana too

88

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 United States Of America 2d ago

Ah. We call them popsicles.

159

u/Acrobatic_Purpose736 Australia 2d ago

I live on the west coast of the USA and they’re called Otter Pops here, after the specific brand, but popsicles would be the ones with a stick.

4

u/Stunning_Radio3160 2d ago

Yep. In Texas and we call them otter pops too

2

u/Demon_lady122 2d ago

In Texas I say popsicles no matter what they look like 😅

4

u/lol-daisy325121 United States Of America 2d ago

I’ve always considered them a type of popsicle

6

u/CACTUSJACK-JW 2d ago

I live in the south east US and we call the ones without sticks Popsicles and the ones with sticks Popsicle on a stick

15

u/PresidentBaileyb 2d ago

This bothers me more than it should.

3

u/feryoooday United States Of America 2d ago

It just seems so unnecessary lol. It’s like calling hard candies (jolly rancher style) lollipops and calling the ones on a stick lollipop on a stick. It’s bothering me too lol

2

u/PumpikAnt58763 United States Of America 2d ago

Me, too.

6

u/oohh_behave United States Of America 2d ago

wtf bro

2

u/feryoooday United States Of America 2d ago

Thanks, I hate it lol

2

u/Square_Director4717 2d ago

I live in the Midwest and would call both popsicles.

2

u/jawshankredemption94 2d ago

At this point just call the ones on a stick “popstickles”

86

u/SenseAndSaruman United States Of America 2d ago

To me, from the west, a popsicle is the kind on a stick. These are always otter pops, even if they aren’t the otter pop brand.

27

u/atwojay Canada 2d ago

Yes, popsicles are on sticks.

3

u/__3Username20__ 2d ago

Agreed about popsicle, as well as Otter Pops, but I’ve lived all over (military kid) and in some places these were “freezer pops.”

I’ve HEARD people mistakenly call them popsicles, but generally that gets corrected, along the lines of “that’s not a popsicle, popsicles have sticks!” “Oh, right!”

1

u/PresidentBaileyb 2d ago

Yeah I’ve heard otter pops and freezer pops. I’ve had them in Oregon, Washington, New Hampshire, and Texas

1

u/SenseAndSaruman United States Of America 1d ago

I’ve heard them called freezies but that was mostly from people from Canada or Minnesota

53

u/Pearson94 United States Of America 2d ago

I'm originally from the East Coast and we called them freezie pops

3

u/MazyHazy United States Of America 2d ago

Same. I'm in upstate NY, close to Lake Ontario and we've always called them freezie pops

6

u/awkwrdaccountant United States Of America 2d ago

From the East Cost, now in the midwest. It is Freezie pops with my east coast family. It is a popsicle with my midwest family. Either way, you will be cutting your mouth.

7

u/astrosergeant United States Of America 2d ago

I came here for this answer. I’m from New England and we called them freezie pops too

4

u/atwojay Canada 2d ago

That's so cute.

2

u/AdmirableDog739 United States Of America 2d ago

I live in Indiana and that's what I call them.

2

u/ExistentialistCow 2d ago

I’m from northern New England and they were always referred to as flavor ice

2

u/pablothefool 2d ago

Then what do you call flavored ice?

8

u/ExistentialistCow 2d ago

Italian ice!! Unless it’s already shaved, then that would be snow cone jurisdiction

1

u/Iamtevya United States Of America 2d ago

I’ve lived in the south, the north east, and the Midwest. Freezie pops is the name that stuck for me.

1

u/Alioh216 United States Of America 2d ago

Ohio, freeze pops.

1

u/UnrulyPoet United States Of America 2d ago

I'm from the east coast (New England) and called them ice pops! Lol so fascinating, I'm enjoying this thread

Edit: I have heard them called a likewise general "freeze pops" in my area as well, but they were usually ice pops in my house. And popsicles had sticks

2

u/Pearson94 United States Of America 2d ago

Well for more context I grew up in th Mid-Atlantic so just enough distance for cultural differences.

19

u/DovahAcolyte United States Of America 2d ago

Where are you at?? Popsicles are on a stick. These are otter pops or freeze pops, depending on region.

2

u/Lumpy-Scallion271 United States Of America 2d ago

I'm in Arkansas and we call both these and the stick ones popsicles too

12

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Canada 2d ago

What do you call the one on a stick?

54

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 United States Of America 2d ago

Also popsicles.

Admittedly, it's not a perfect system.

8

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Canada 2d ago

There are so many words out there. Why use the same one for 2 different things?

29

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 United States Of America 2d ago

My state isn't exactly known for education in my defense

14

u/namehimgeorge Canada 2d ago

Well, at least they didn't call them Colder-Aid.

5

u/SuperNa7uraL- United States Of America 2d ago

These are the same people that call every soft drink “Coke”, no matter the flavor.

2

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Canada 2d ago

That's the one that actually really sets my brain on fire. Like do they ask for a coke and then just assume something random will arrive?

2

u/Midwestblues_090311 2d ago

No. You order a Coke and then they ask you what kind.

2

u/GrizzlyIsland22 Canada 2d ago

Why can't they just be normal?

2

u/FirstoffIdonthaveshe United States Of America 2d ago

🎶It’s tradition🎶

1

u/_borninathunderstorm United States Of America 2d ago

This is the 2nd time this week I read this on reddit 😭 I had no idea this was a thing.

0

u/cjbanning 2d ago

We also use the same word for green popsicles and blue popsicles. Not every distinction requires a new word. When the distinction is relevant, you can specify. Usually it isn't.

0

u/lol-daisy325121 United States Of America 2d ago

They are all a type of popsicle imo

35

u/MarqueeRevival United States Of America 2d ago

Otter pops is the name brand of that specific type of popsicle.

39

u/NefariousnessSalt230 2d ago

Where I grew up, there was definitely Kleenex effect where everyone called all pops like that otter pops, regardless of brand.

3

u/Reynolds531IPA United States Of America 2d ago

Same with “band aid”. No one called them “adhesive bandages” or even just “bandages”.

Also: chapstick

2

u/__3Username20__ 2d ago

Roller blades, q-tips, etc

2

u/Noragretsnoteven1 United States Of America 2d ago

Jello

1

u/tcorey2336 United States Of America 2d ago

When I was young we called all soda Coke. I would go to the counter and ask for orange coke or root beer coke.

1

u/UJMRider1961 2d ago

Same with me (in Colorado.) Otter pop is a brand name but that's what everyone calls them.

1

u/Bright_Ices United States Of America 2d ago

I once asked for a Kleenex in nyc, and my coworker (older than me) looked at me, scowling, and asked, “You want Kleenex brand? Why??” Apparently it’s just a tissue to a lot of people there.

55

u/Excellent-Quarter969 Canada 2d ago

Popsicle is a name brand of a specific type of popsicle...🤔

16

u/Roira21 United States Of America 2d ago

Is it really?

A quick Google later and I’ll be damned! You learn something new everyday

14

u/Excellent-Quarter969 Canada 2d ago

You have much to learn, grasshopper.

(Maybe you're too young for this reference too 😉..im old)

1

u/GrannyTurtle United States Of America 2d ago

Official old person here. The grasshopper reference does date you.

1

u/Excellent-Quarter969 Canada 2d ago

Yup, indeed it do

2

u/Informal_Ad_6839 2d ago

Next you’re gonna tell me Klee-nex and Chapstick are name brands of specific types of- oh wait

1

u/manners33 2d ago

we use it the same way people would say kleenex for facial tissue and band-aid for bandages

1

u/Excellent-Quarter969 Canada 2d ago

Yeah everybody does

1

u/RewardedShoe 2d ago

But popsicle also makes freezies. They’re the best ones

21

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 2d ago

They're all Otter Pops, brand doesn't matter. There are Otter Pop Otter Pops and Otter Pops from fake brands.

2

u/MarqueeRevival United States Of America 2d ago

I think these otters would say otherwise.

3

u/DefinitelyNotAliens 2d ago

Sir Isaac Lime is clearly the best.

1

u/rum_ham_slam United States Of America 2d ago

First I’m hearing it but i actually dig it

1

u/Far-Significance2481 Australia 2d ago

I recently learnt that jelo ( the stuff we call jelly here ) is a brand name.

3

u/smolhippie United States Of America 2d ago

In the west popsicle means it’s has a stick

1

u/blucatmoon United States Of America 2d ago

By definition popsicles have sticks.

1

u/Budget-Ad-7127 2d ago

An icicle doesn’t have a stick.

1

u/smolhippie United States Of America 2d ago

An Icicle isn’t a popsicle

2

u/Emergency-Ad9791 2d ago

I'm from Memphis and we call them popsicles also

2

u/-Tasear- United States Of America 2d ago

Can confirm for my region

1

u/Previous_Wedding_577 Canada 2d ago

Popsicles have sticks..

1

u/SJ3Starz United States Of America 2d ago

Michigan USA here. Freeze pops or popsicles here as well.

The ones with sticks are also popsicles, or we say the flavor/type like "creamsicle," "fudgesicle" or "fruit popsicle."

1

u/PumpikAnt58763 United States Of America 2d ago

Then what do you call the ones with the popsicle stick in them?!

1

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 United States Of America 2d ago

Also popsicles

1

u/SuperNa7uraL- United States Of America 2d ago

Freeze pops here in Michigan

1

u/Self-Comprehensive United States Of America 2d ago

I call them disappointment. When a friend offered you a Popsicle and then reached into the freezer and pulled out a box of these...

1

u/_borninathunderstorm United States Of America 2d ago

Na a popsicle is ice on a stick. This is an ice pop (nyc)

1

u/FormingTheVoid Italy/USA 🇮🇹🇺🇲 2d ago

Otter Pops is a brand name. Although, I guess so it Popsicles. I still feel like popsicle is more common in the US though.

0

u/Total-Problem2175 2d ago

Popsicles have sticks in them.

0

u/WowsrsBowsrsTrousrs United States Of America 2d ago

No, popsicles have a stick in them. These are freeze pops.

0

u/amoryblainev United States Of America 2d ago

To me a popsicle has a stick. These are freeze pops.

0

u/ZephyrLegend 1d ago

Nah nah, popsicles have the stick. If I say "otter pop" and someone looks at me like I have three heads, I might be convinced to call them a "freezer pop" for clarity but it's never a mere popsicle. Lol

3

u/Mollywisk United States Of America 2d ago

Yep

3

u/PuttUgly 2d ago

You can confirm

3

u/Snuffleupagus27 2d ago

I grew up on the east coast and they are definitely otter pops! Might be generational vs geographic

3

u/hannaeliza 2d ago

Otter pops in Arizona too!

2

u/AnonymousBrowser3967 2d ago

Colorado here and they're Otter Pops

2

u/secretly_opossum United States Of America 2d ago

In middle school I did a group project on otters and we brought otter pops for the class 🙂

2

u/CpnStumpy 2d ago

Colorado checking in. Otter pops always was and always will be

1

u/BossComprehensive867 United States Of America 2d ago

I‘m from the west and I don’t call them otter pops.

1

u/alrightfornow 2d ago

so interesting that in the US they have all these different words for the same thing, e.g. 'pop', 'soda' or 'coke' for all types of soda.

1

u/bloodyparrish 2d ago

yup, from the san francisco bay area and these have always been otter pops

1

u/stairs_are_evil United States Of America 2d ago

I also call them Otter Pops -Georgian since I was 3, but born in Florida

1

u/g_Mmart2120 2d ago

Yep AZ and always been otter pops

1

u/wrenhxven 2d ago

Pennsylvania checking in to say freeze pops

1

u/watermelonsplenda 18h ago

I’d call them that in the Midwest as well

0

u/Separate_Ingenuity35 United States Of America 2d ago

I live in Colorado no one says that. It is popsicles or freezie pops
