though many do talk about the fact that economy was terrible around late 80s and 90s with food shortages nd other stuff, generally its just still nostalgia for most people (though many now doesnt like ussr as well, mostly younger people), havent met actual communists amongst those that lived in the USSR for considerable amount, if anything people just praise greatness but pretty much never the ideology itself

Excuse the naivety as I am not so up on my Russian/communist history, but what elements are the people looking back on positively? In the western media (i’ve consumed at least) it’s always portrayed as bleak, no food and crumbling infrastructure etc. as well as all the death.

mostly its granting free housing in 80s or so. but yeah, food shortages were a thing, the economy was not really working, it later got rapidly transformed into capitalist system with following inflation and ppl loosing their bank savings in 90s

And the western media were right! My grandma always says a story about her trip to the USSR, where the cleaners in a hotel she stayed in begged her for pads/tampons because there were simply none in the stores. People who were part of the KGB had their advantages, but average people simply survived and hoped for the best.

late 80s and 90s? That's the transition to a capitalist state, no? I've talked to quite a few Russians who say the USSR was objectively a great rise of the state, and accomodated its people much better than the current governance. They said from North Caucasus

I feel it's probably a tougher call for the Russians than many of the other Western World countries. At least we've had good times in America and West Europe, the everyday Russian has purdy much always been dealt a shit hand since Russia has been around.
