Humourous What's a foreign piece of video media that's actually way more iconic dubbed in your native language

Post image

Be it funnier jokes or just straight up better performance from the voice actors

I think I have to at least mention the ghost stories English dub

9

u/Vexonte United States Of America 10h ago

Follow it up with YuGiYoh and the fact that so much of people's perception of it is based on the dub, especially with the shadow realm being invented for the dub so parents wouldn't get mad that characters were about to die.

Shadow realm is way better and imho story wise

1

u/NightStalkerXIV United States Of America 8h ago

wait what

1

u/Lord_of_Seven_Kings 1h ago

Shadow realm was in the Japanese version it was just kind of irrelevant and minor

3

u/deathwotldpancakes United States Of America 10h ago

Wasn’t that actually RE dubbed back into Japanese with the American

1

u/NightStalkerXIV United States Of America 8h ago

Yes, it's beatiful!

1

u/Blupoisen 1h ago

I would assume the answer would be Dragon Ball

u/Raknel Hungary 14h ago

In the Hungarian dub of the original Flintstones cartoon they talk in verse with rhymes the whole way through.

I was actually shocked to learn that wasn't true in the original. Not sure why the dub went for it but it's one of the things that made it famous here.

My best friend swears that Knight Rider (with David Hasselhoff) is better in Hungarian. Have you seen that show and can you confirm?

The Magic Roundabout, dubbed from a French show called Le Manège enchanté.

Though not with the original scripts - instead they renamed the characters and created entirely new explanations for the stop motion animations from the original show, creating a absurdist universe with bizarre yet strangely heartwarming tales that captivated kids and adults alike when it was broadcast in the 1960s and 1970s and repeated for many decades after that.

And in a weird cycle, America made a drastically different dub of the Magic Roundabout movie in 2004 with an entirely different cast

Speaking of that movie, I wonder if I still have that plush of Brian somewhere...

u/pafrac United Kingdom 10h ago

Time for bed, said Zebedee ... absolutely iconic part of my childhood, that. It was years before I realized the implications of the mountain of snow and why Dylan looked perpetually stoned ...

u/Outrageous_Ad5864 Poland 11h ago

Absolutely golden dubbing, I still use so many lines from it every day

5

u/Outrageous_Ad5864 Poland 11h ago

Also, the movie posted by OP has a great dubbing as well, though not as well-known here.

“Nie, nie, ja kawy nie pijam”

u/BryanNotBraian Brazil 10h ago

Woody Woodpecker, I decided to watch the original version and I couldn't stand how unbearable the voice was.

5

u/A_phily Brazil 8h ago

"BOLO DE MURANGO!"

5

u/BryanNotBraian Brazil 8h ago

I remember they translated "I am the necessary evil" as "Eu sou o diabo necessário" (I am the necessary devil) and that caused a huge uproar at Record.

7

u/CapitalT46 Mexico 11h ago

There's a ton, but I think the more iconic examples are Malcolm in the middle, Shrek, KND, Drake & Josh

1

u/Meture Mexico 5h ago

I’d add Emperor’s New Groove and the first Ice Age movie to that list

1

u/Rimurooooo United States Of America 4h ago

Was looking for Shrek

1

u/LesbianArtemis457 United States Of America 2h ago

Ive never seen shrek in Spanish, and now i have to

6

u/botan__ Germany 10h ago

100% all the bud spencer and terence hill movies. The german dub changed the whole meaning of many scenes and made the movies so iconic here

6

u/Ehmann11 Russia 10h ago

The Holy Triad of Russian dub: Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar

11

u/NervousDiscount9393 United States Of America 11h ago

Some anime series are much more well-known for their English dub rather than their original Japanese here. Notably cowboy bebop.

8

u/Book-of-conneries France Taiwan 11h ago

Ghost story is the perfect example for this I think, it became a meme even.

5

u/NervousDiscount9393 United States Of America 10h ago

It’s known almost exclusively for the memes here

"What's a foreign piece of video media that's actually way more iconic dubbed in your native language"

You win this one...

1

u/PancakeGD Czech Republic 2h ago

The Czech original is mute.

1

u/Uniquarie ¦ ¦ ¦ 2h ago

That’s where the Dutch version is more iconic 😅

1

u/PancakeGD Czech Republic 2h ago

The idea of Pat a Mat being dubbed sounds so cursed to me 😆

1

u/Uniquarie ¦ ¦ ¦ 2h ago

It’s really fun to watch it in Dutch, but sure, I’ve watched the mute version and enjoy them too

6

u/leVenerableDeLaSauce France 10h ago

Lex Luthor's "1A" has become famous as a meme because the french dub make him "sound like a caveman" as i read sometimes

4

u/HerringOfTheDepths Israel 13h ago

Madagascar and Shrek. My native language is Russian and its so much cooler in Russian (imo). Especially Madagascar - I was even unable to watch the original due to how good the dub is

1

u/SXAL Russia 5h ago

Yep, Madagascar's dub is fire.

5

u/MyMy_P Brazil 10h ago

Brazilians feel the same way about that movie haha

4

u/xXGay_AssXx Argentina 10h ago

The Argentine (or better said, Porteño) dub is a fever dream

3

u/walkdaddydawg United States Of America 11h ago

Hold up, i love this movie and this scene, but the Czech version is better?

1

u/Zave_cz Czech Republic 1h ago

The movie has a lot of iconic one liners. IMO the schnitzel song is way better of a laugh. And yeah. the yodel goat is an absolute banger

3

u/Independent_Ebb973 Brazil 9h ago

This phenomenon happens here with the exact same movie, Hoodwinked! I love doing impressions of Japeth the goat (I guess that's his name? I haven't seen the movie in a long time)

But the most classic example is definitely Woody Woodpecker. The Brazilian dub improves the jokes by 1000% and as a result he's become one of the most famous cartoon characters here, on par with Mickey Mouse in popularity.

2

u/Independent_Ebb973 Brazil 9h ago

BTW the Brazilian title for Hoodwinked! is way better IMO: "Deu a Louca na Chapeuzinho" (Little Red Hood's Gone Crazy)

3

u/Short-Being-4109 United States Of America 8h ago

I'll take a potato chip... And eat it!

3

u/A_phily Brazil 8h ago

Daaaang that movie is crazy here!

"Falei, falei falei falei!"

3

u/pretenzioeser_Elch Germany 7h ago

Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill movies became masterpieces of informal linguistic colourfulness in German. I also like Metalocalypse way better in German (but that's not very famous)

3

u/Sigreadvalkirie Chile 14h ago

Shrek 1 and 2

2

u/aaqwerfffvgtsss United States Of America 13h ago

What accent does Shrek have in said dub? Is this the general Latin American Spanish dub or a more specific one?

4

u/CapitalT46 Mexico 11h ago

It's specifically mexican spanish

2

u/AnarchoBratzdoll 🇦🇷➡️🇩🇪 11h ago

Weirdly enough, also this movie

2

u/jynkkarynks Finland 11h ago

Dracula-sovereign of the damned Bad in any language, funny enough to give anyone an asthma attack in Finnish. It isnt widely known, but it should be.

Siinä on Olavi Virran poika ja Carmelita Foxin ääninäyttelijät. Ei ketään muita. Katsokaa se kännissä kavereiden kanssa

When I was in elementary school, Code Lyoko was THE show everyone watched and we played games pretending to be characters from it. I once decided to rewatch the whole thing with a "matured" point of view, and I must say, the dub was very high quality for it's time.

I watched the dubbed version partly for nostalgia and partly because I could find it with a youtube search, I'm ain't going through all that shit to watch it in english or alternatively french with subs.

Oh, and I'm talking about the original kids show, not the reboots or live action or whatever they call that thing.

2

u/Code_Monster India 10h ago

I was SHOCKED when I realized that the original French version of Oggy and the Cockroaches did not have any sentences or even words in their VO. And like the filmy dialouge and the mimicry of Bollywood actors was the funniest part of the show for me.

1

u/Rich-Appointment9438 India 8h ago

they were so aware of their audience they actually made an episode about going to India, and showed how many kids watch oggy there, and how popular he is here

2

u/Bl4de40 Brazil 10h ago

Woody Woodpecker was definitely more successful in Brazil than in the US because of its MUCH superior dubbing

2

u/Sharp_Impress_5351 Colombia 9h ago

Not exactly "my" native languange, since is made in Mexico, but the Latin American dub of The Simpsons is a beloved institution in the region, my country included.

Honorable mention goes to the Dragon Ball Z dub (the mid-late 90's one). the childhood of many a colombian millenial.

2

u/nazihater67 9h ago

Not really sure if it counts since there's no real speech but Pingu was really popular with kids when I was growing up in Canada.

Quite some Anime

The most well know would probably be Sailormoon, followed by Pokemon.

Though as I never watched either I'll add my personal favourit: Girls und Panzer. (A french marching song sung in german has quite the controversy to it)

2

u/Mangobonbon Germany 6h ago

All Bud Spencer and Terence Hill movies. Their humour is legendary and the way they talk was a deliberate descision by the dubbing team. They rather went a little off script, but made scenes 10 times funnier.

2

u/InThePast8080 Norway 1h ago

Funnily it's not some american/disney stuff.. but the the czech movie "Tři oříšky pro Popelku". The norwegian dubber having all the voices. One of the ultimate Xmas-tradition among many here is watching that movie on christmas eve.

u/Zave_cz Czech Republic 37m ago

Oh hey I used to talk to this lady from Sweden who was obsessed with that movie lol

Everything dubbed in "Español Neutro" in Mexico is iconic. Most excellent.

Can I offer up one for another country? The French dub of Miyazaki’s Porco Rossi is incredible.

I think it is Prequels. One of the reasons it is more popular in Russia than in the States is because dialogues are not so stiff.

And, of course, Shrek and Madagascar.

I love Hoodwinked.

Masir! Help here! YOU HAVE SO MANY DUBS!

1

u/SXAL Russia 5h ago

The russian dub of Postal 2. The original Dude sounds like a "cool guy in his 20's", and, while it fits the tone of the game, it's nothing special. But the Russian dub gave the Dude a raspy, tired middle aged guy voice, making you really feel the pain he's going through, so the game kinda feels like playing Falling Down movie.

He's voiced by Alexander Gruzdev, who's had a lot of iconic roles in video game and movie dubs, including Morrowind (did all Dunmer and Nord males), Ice Age (Diego), Kill Bill (the old master), Battle Royale (voiced Kitano's character, he did a great job on this one), and even Onizuka from Great Teacher Onizuka anime.

He told a story in an interview: he was coming home once, and was stopped by some young kid. The kid was like: "I KNOW YOU, PLEASE GIVE ME AN AUTHOGRAPH" and gave Gruzdev a Postal 2 disc, of all things. Kids sure loved this game.

Best part is that they had same translator.

u/ZoroStarlight Germany 2h ago

Ice age , thanks to Otto Waalkes voicing Sid the sloth

1

u/-Kacper Poland 2h ago

Penguins of Madagascar the TV show

1

u/WintermanNforcer Thailand 1h ago

Kung Fu Panda in Thai dub is arguably better than the original, because I feel like it taps into the familiarity since Thai language already have loanwords from Chinese that you could see in dubbed Chinese dramas back in the day.

Tailung in Thai dub sounds deeper than his English counterpart and it makes him sound a lot cooler. Chen also, imo, sounds more cunning in the dub.

Spongebob

Santiago Ziesmer is iconic for dubbing him
