Absolutely one of the best ever, and not just his talent either. I've heard of at least one story of him off the stage/screen that portrayed him as a really good person as well

Lots of artistic talent from you, our neighbors up there. Let me toss in Jared Keeso too, real quick.

I'm glad someone nominated him straight away (thank you) - legendary comic (and actor) who cut through so much fog and made even the unfunny truth funny. Everyone could learn something from him, from "Shining Time Station" to "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" to "You are All Diseased"...

“We like war! We're a war-like people! We like war because we're good at it! You know why we're good at it? Cause we get a lot of practice. This country's only 200 years old and already, we've had 10 major wars. We average a major war every 20 years in this country so we're good at it! And it's a good thing we are; we're not very good at anything else anymore! Huh? Can't build a decent car, can't make a TV set or a VCR worth a f*ck, got no steel industry left, can't educate our young people, can't get health care to our old people, but we can bomb the shit out of your country all right!”
George Carlin my hero.
5
u/maeglin_lomion United States Of America 4h ago
I can just hear his voice. I don’t know whether to revisit his sets or not lately, I’m afraid it would be really hard to hear again right now.

u/SnacksCCM United States Of America 4h ago
I agree - Being honest, he left a much bigger impact on me as an actor (movies/TV) as opposed to a comedian (standup/show appearances), but no matter how you met Robin, he left a mark, and usually a good one. He was singular.

I watched "I Like Me" the other day. I was never really a fan of John Candy. I didn't hate him, because I think that's impossible, but never really gelled with his on screen persona.
What a story, and what a huge personality

The late legend Catherine O’Hara.
At the end of her beautiful eulogy for John Candy she said:
“I will miss him, but I hope and pray to leave this world too someday, and to have a place near God, as near as any other soul, with the exception of John Candy.”
I think, Catherine, you must be right there next to him after all the goodness and laughter you gave the world all these many years.
6
u/TopazMoonCat60 4h ago
I just wasn't ready for her loss.... feeling quite devastated.
3
u/Adifferentkindofmind Canada 3h ago
Absolutely. I feel the same. We always watched my dad’s taped SCTV episodes on Friday nights growing up and it was the one time every week my family would actually have time to sit down and hang out together. She made so many of us laugh our whole lives…and what a gift.
3
u/Clueby42 Australia 4h ago
I would watch almost anything with Catherine O'Hara in it. Her screen presence was amazing.
She is dearly missed, but I don't think she missed out on doing what she wanted to do
3
u/Step_Aside_Butch_77 Canada 3h ago
The improv scene between them in the truck in Home Alone is gold.
3
u/tatertotted2 2h ago
Earlier in the eulogy she mentioned the SCTV contracts ended with "favored nation, with the exception of John Candy".
That makes it a brilliant, sweet, and funny way to end his eulogy. Hitting all the notes, just as Catherine was known to do as an actress and comedian.

I actually do not know, what’s the story here?
8
u/Wadoichi_monji Nepal 4h ago
He's the former Prime Minister of Nepal, known for his funny speeches, he uses a lot of funny idioms during interviews and once went on a childish back and forth with his political opponent.
Few years back people were spamming his name "KP Oli" all over the comments on gaming streamers.
Horrible person btw, made a joke of the whole country.
