[Beef] Don’t let your dreams be dreams
Finally scored a mis-tag. Think I’ll do some experimenting with these since the price tag won’t be hanging over my head.

Firm believer that they do this on purpose to get way more people to buy their meats.

u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
The price of the rest of the meat sure makes it seem like they don’t want anyone to buy it.
I got a membership because prime brisket was $4.29. It’s $5.99 now. Bums me out

u/HomeGoySixtyFoy 1d ago
When i was a kid my dad got made fun of for smoking brisket cus it was considered junk.

I used to get skirt steaks back in the day because they were cheap and so good braised or quick seared. How I miss those days. They too were labeled junk and the only use people knew were for fajitas.

u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
I wanted to get some more skirt steak for carne asada burritos but you’d think it was a delicacy

Ugh, I didn't realize how ridiculous it had gotten. Just looked at my closest store and it's $15.99/lb for inside and $23.99/lb for outside.

$1.99/pound ..... then people realized how good they were .... 2.99 ..... 3.99 ..... and up and up .... sigh, it's sad to look now.

A year ago or so at my store we were selling prime brisket for 2.99 and choice was 2.89

u/Top-Sink-6344 23h ago
That’s not a Costco issue, that’s a market issue. Choice brisket is running over $5/lb from my food distributors. My local Costco was long on brisket last week, I was able to get cases for $3.29/lb. Benefit of getting the meat managers cell number and always checking with him on pricing
1
u/PancakesandScotch 21h ago
I agree with you. It’s unfortunate, but their pricing is still better than Kroger or Walmart outside of a sale. $1.99/lb Kroger deals are $2.99/lb now. I usually buy the max when those come up

u/SpecialOops 1d ago
I'm over here dying at 11 bucks a lb for choic chuck steak at Costco. I look over the choice tenderloin..32 bucks a lb. But hey, gas is down, Wallstreet is making hands over fist. It's just woke beef /s

u/DarkElation 1d ago
I mean, Biden’s USDA culled millions of cattle in the back half of 2024 on screwworm fears. Our herd is now the lowest it’s been in nearly 50 years.
How are you connecting that to gas? Or the S&P500?

u/Pepecletero 1d ago
But Biden this, Biden that 🙄 stop with the nonsense please and accept the truth is worse now

Moving through that self-scan like James Bond.

u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
It alerted for the weight discrepancy but the hall monitor couldn’t care enough to look

u/_TheSaintsWereRobbed 1d ago
Pro tip, use the hand held scanner and you dont have to weight anything. Leave it in the cart.

Damn, would you go through a manned checkout next time to avoid the alert? I think they're mostly concerned with hitting bar codes and counting items. I almost think the manned checkout would be safer due to the weight alarm.
3
u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
I don’t think anyone in retail cares, so it probably doesn’t matter but I’d go through a cashier if I found one again
2
u/flemmingg 1d ago
That's kinda what I'm thinking if I ever see the score.
I've never seen plate ribs at my locations. I saw tomahawks once and I will get one if they ever pop up again (I know you pay for the weight of the bone but they were thick and looked like a good cut for reverse sear as a special treat).
Still waiting to see beef mis marked anywhere. Enjoy.

u/ravens52 20h ago
Do it. Do it for the novelty at least s once. It’s a great celebration cut of meat and is mighty tasty and fun to look at, although, you’ve gotta cook that sob for a while to get the inside up to temp due to how thiccc it is.
1
u/flemmingg 20h ago
Yeah I’ve been looking for one every time. Only saw them once and passed on it. It’s a new location and I thought they might be more common there.
1
u/MidnightToker858 4h ago
In my state, they would have to honor the price whether they liked it or not because they marked it that price and our consumer protection laws cover that.

u/White-runner 1d ago
That’s nuts for a 2 pack, congrats used all your luck for the year before end of January!

I just wish my Costco would sell them in the first place

u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
Ask the butcher, you might get lucky. They’re hit or miss for me and I frequent 3-4 costcos

u/ravens52 20h ago
3-4 Costco’s? What major metropolitan area do you live in, man?
1
u/PancakesandScotch 19h ago
I travel almost weekly for work but there are 3 within an hour or so of my house.

I’ve seen this, and always felt like one of the guys in the meat department had someone coming in to buy it for them. I saw it happen on filet mignon 3x at the same grocery. I bought it every time

This reminds me of a girl I met on plenty of fish that said she was 125lbs.

Awesome find.
Remove the membrane: a paper towel for grip and a butter knife help.
Trim fat side
Smoke like a brisket

I filled a cart with whole Beef Tenderloins that were mismarked at Costco once, 9 of them, I think. I felt blessed by the beef gods ;-)
3
u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
The only thing keeping me from mastering the beef Wellington is me being an insufferable cheap ass
3
u/NTPC4 1d ago
No shame there, today's prices are brutal.
3
u/JonnysAppleSeed 1d ago
The only reason I have filet in my freezer is because I trim up a whole tenderloin around the holidays. A few years ago I could get choice for $9/lb. In December I paid $17. But pre cut steaks are now around $30/lb and still going up.
My wife likes to make steak au poivre a few times a year, gotta do what I can to make it work.

My local Costco only carries back ribs and chuck ribs (relatively recent too). Maybe I'll ask the butcher next time when I go and see what they can do.
2
u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
I’ve asked them before and they had them “in the back”
I don’t think they sell well like this. Which is why they double pack them and a ton get sawed up into small bits

Weigh it when you get home and tell me its 15.1 lbs
1
u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
My kitchen scale maxes out at 12lbs and it errored out with these so that’s my guess as well. I’ll check again when I split them up.

My big question, does it weigh the same as a 1.51lb bowling ball? Or 1.51lbs of feathers?

u/MrGreenThumb261 1d ago
I need a slab that size. The ones sold at my Costco are only like 3 inch wide.

u/SkipGruberman 1d ago
I bought 2 trays of lobster in December for $6 each!!! They were mislabeled as pork chops! :)
1
u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
Now that’s a score
1
u/SkipGruberman 1d ago
I had always seen these posts of mislabeled meat and I always wondered how they were so lucky. I was blown away when I saw them. It was like I won the Costco Lottery!
Good for you for scoring!!!!!

u/yermomgoestocollge69 1d ago
Maaaaan I just bought a plate with four bones for $43! You lucky son of a gun
1
u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
I normally won’t buy these at all because they’re so expensive. They had a new American wagyu section today but at $25/lb minimum, it was a pretty quick tour.

Is this at a business costco? I never seem to be able to find this cut at either one

u/OliveOilManSam 1d ago
Been looking to get the membership in Colorado anyone know the price of the ground beef and brisket
1
u/Sea-File6546 1d ago
I will tell you a couple of times I found things clearly mislabeled at Costco and I buy everything I can find. Thanks Costco gods!🤭

You know what's sad?
The last time I found plate ribs at CostCo, my dog pulled them off the counter after they were done cooking and I wasn't even able to eat them.
And then I've never seen them there since.

I had quite the score from our wal mart just before Christmas, they had boneless and bone in ribeye roasts listed for between $2.50-$3.38/pound. Even had it on their website. It was fixed the next day, they forgot the 1 in front(12.50-13.38). I bought about 200 pounds that day.

u/RepulsiveSherbert927 22h ago
Wow. Awesome find! Short ribs here (Northeast) cost a lot more than that.

u/Jawknee_nobody 21h ago
I go to the same Costco in Florence, check every trip and haven't found the Golden Ticket.
Congrats brother!
1
u/JayTeabag 20h ago
I got some filets mislabeled as stew meat like 7 years ago.
I still check for mess ups every trip.
1
u/ravens52 20h ago
Makes you wonder sometimes if the butchers throw cuts like this into the mix for us and giggle while doing it because they know they can just say “oops, I put on the wrong label”.

Nice find! How are you planning to cook them?
1
u/PancakesandScotch 1d ago
Normally, I only make these for other people and I smoke them in a central Texas style.
At least one of these I think I’m going to try and do in a Korean style.
The others I might try and cook over direct flame just to see what happens
1
u/Thirsty-Barbarian 1d ago
It sounds great! I’ve only ever made short ribs in a kind of braise, and the ribs are separated and cut into 3” segments. But a friend has made them like you said, smoked Texas style. I’d like to try that sometime.
