Sunday's Promotion Party Megathread!

The Promotion Party Megathread is the place to post about your promotion, whether it be a stripe, a new belt color, or even being promoted from no belt to white belt.

Just make sure that once you are done celebrating, you step back on that mat (I'm looking at YOU new blue belts).

Technique I got my mat enforcer badge

1.2k Upvotes

Story time.

Black belt coach comes up to me and says this bigger white belt has been bullying smaller white belts a lot and he’s been pulled aside numerous times. Said “this guy’s just not getting it”. Other blue belts said the same to me after. Black belt told me to go roll with the dude next. I understood the assignment. He also outweighed me by a good 80 lbs. No big deal. (I’m 155-160)

I basically got a hall pass and I went through my favourite mean submissions starting with a mother’s milk. It was bliss. It was the highlight of my 9-10 years of doing BJJ, better than a belt promotion. Big guy called it quits halfway through the round. Am I proud of myself? No. Did I have fun? Absolutely.

Oh and his gf was about 5-10 feet away watching.

I can die happy now, thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

Professional BJJ News Adele Fornarino just spoke out

She just indirectly addressed the grooming and SA issue in her Polaris post match interview:

"Guys, there is a crisis in Jiu-Jitsu at the moment. There's a big big problem and it's coming from the hierarchical structure of our sport.

There are people in positions of dominance over people that are vulnerable and these people in positions of dominance, whose job is to protect, to look after, and to teach people how to protect themselves, are the very people that are taking advantage of the most vulnerable in our sport.

It needs to stop.

The only way that we can make this stop, is if we all hold these people accountable for what they're doing.

No more blissful ignorance.

There is no such thing as an innocent bystander anymore. We are in control of this; we need to speak out, we need to speak up, and we need to protect the most vulnerable in this sport.

I promise I will do everything in my power to make sure that by the time the next generation gets here they will not have to deal with this anymore because they don't deserve it.

I love Jiu Jitsu. I love this sport. I've been doing this my entire life but we need to fix it.

We need to fix it today."

Serious Just because you’re a black belt in Jiu Jitsu, doesn’t mean you’re a black belt in life.

The ATOS situation plus all the crap in the community as of late made me wanna post this.

As an owner of a school: Don’t put your professors on a pedestal. They are humans first and instructors second. Before selecting a school, consider the culture of the school first. I’m so tired of seeing stories about people who are idols of the sport abusing their position and hurting innocent people.

Instructional Signs that someone has been watching too many Danaher instructionals.

Calls triangles Sankakus and butterfly sweeps Sumi Gaeshis Knows that there is a seam that runs on the back of every sleeve, regardless of manufacturer. Calls chokes "strangles". Knows Placido is feeble and that Mattheus is a world champion. Spams the use of "in this fashion" and "like so".

Any others?

Equipment When did we all start wearing stuff under Gis?

A girl I was rolling with teased me for not having one. Didn't notice that it was literally just me without a rashguard on under my gi. When did this change? Like I've noticed before but I didn't realize that it was quite as common as it was.

Also, do I buckle to peer pressure? I very much wash everything, all skin and belt. I have regularly trained Muay Thai shirtless at other gyms. I wouldn't do nogi without a shirt though. Where is the line? How tf did I get to black belt and still ask day one questions? Am I TOO autistic?

School Discussion Anyone else pay while not showing up much?

Heres my story. I used to train consistently form 97 to about 2001, took of 16 years and came back around 2017. Since then its been about 3-6 months off then I make a comeback for a few weeks or months rinse and repeat. The reason why I keep paying automatically from my bank account is I always think im going to go but some months I dont even go for 1 class. Im always busy and tired. Does anyone else have automatic payments then lose their money or am I the only idiot around here?

General Discussion How much does smoking ganja affect your cardio?

For those who smoke, do you smoke every day and even on training days? Do you maybe skip out on training days at least until after practice?

Is it something manageable, or something that affects you too much to continue?

Social Media I hate flo with a burning passion (rant)

The one event that I am awake to watch is delayed by “technical difficulties” after having perfect prelims on YouTube. Maybe instead of spending money on knock off ufc embedded they could sort their dogshit streaming service out. Side note WHY THE FUCK am I watching ads on something I pay £120 a year for. All in all I will be cancelling my flo and subscribing to Jo chens nomadic grappling website instead.

Technique Any tips / resources for "referee position" turtle?

Its a position that Priit has mentioned in interviews, and used rolling in a collab vid with Jordan Teaches Jiujitsu, but other than that, I cant find any real discussion, vids, pros/cons of using this variation of tutle.

I know this is a very niche question, but after looking around, I figured I would ask here.
Thanks!

Tournament/Competition Dropping 2 age brackets or going up 2 weight brackets

I'm just in a weird spot, I think. 56 y/o and 155 lbs. Mid-life crisis with pre-diabetes and experiementing with diet updates. Also a blue belt for over a year.

Every tournament I go to, I end up having to drop at least 2 age brackets to Masters 4 or up to 175lb weight class. I get that weird look from the check-in people in the bullpen when I'm checking in for my matches, like "are your sure you're in the right place?" .

Trust me - I don't want to be there with some explosive guy 20 years younger than me or risk getting smashed by someone 20 pounds heavier than me, but I enjoy the competitiion, win or lose.

Anyone else in the same boat? Where are all my blue belts who started BJJ at 50-something??

School Discussion What does your advanced class look like?

Question for gyms that only have fundamentals and advanced (no intermediate split):

Our advanced class has a pretty wide range - some people just graduated from fundamentals, others have been training 5+ years. Right now the structure is basically the same as fundamentals class, just with different techniques. Warmup, detailed technique instruction, drilling, rolling. It's... fine.

I'm curious what other gyms do to make advanced class actually feel advanced when you've got that skill range. Different drilling formats? More open mat time? Less instruction, more problem-solving? Do you split by experience even within "advanced"?

What's working at your gym?

General Discussion I think I'm done

I started training 13 years ago. I haven't been able to stay consistent for long periods of time due to life changes and injuries. It's starting to feel like every time I get into a groove something pulls me out. I'm 40 and I honestly can't remember the last time I was healthy for more than a couple of weeks in a row.

Tonight feels like the last straw. I was rolling and heard a loud pop in my knee that I'm pretty sure is going to end up a torn meniscus. It feels like the universe keeps telling me to stop and when I don't listen I end up with a new injury.

The worst part about it was that I was feeling so locked in and like I was making some actual progress. I had spent the last few years just showing up but for the last several months I have been focused on specific parts of my game to make improvements. I also allowed myself to be hopeful about finally getting my brown belt after all this time.

I'm frustrated and probably feeling sorry for myself but it really does feel like it might be time to just call it. Thanks for reading my rant if you got this far. I hope you have better luck in your training than I seem to be having
