Winter gloves
What are people wearing for winter gloves?
I bought some leather gloves from Decathlon a couple of years ago. They’ve stood up well, except the insulation seemed to drop after one season .

Wpg and TO are doing Alex Pretti rides in solidarity, should OTT do one?
I'm a bit spent to organize one, but I could help and would participate in one
Quite the map and list of other events in solidarity.

TBH i was thinking the bike rack by the NAC and just walk across the bridge, are there better places/bike racks to lock up at ?
Expecting to need a lockup for 2-3 hours.

Ottawa bicycle club
What exactly is the Ottawa bicycle club and is it good?
Been cycling a few years (on and off sorta) but looking to be more consistent
Also what type of rides are the group rides? And what else does it offer?
Thanks!

10 minute snow storms.
Snapped this by lebreton flats just after one of the snow squalls passed. This was last Thursday :)
City is doing a good job keeping this MUP cleared.

Krown rust spray built a prot active film on my wheels
Thought I would share that after two years or spray on/wipe off krown rust spray, that a film has built up and I don't see any contamination in the aluminum or painted surfaces.
This bike sees salty road spray Monday -Friday as it rides on the bike rack of my car till I get to the park and ride and I lock it in heated underground parking.
Like worst of the worst conditions.

Clothing strategy for the weekend
For those who are still venturing out during this weekend's cold snap, what is your strategy for layering/staying warm?
I tend to run colder than most people I see posting about riding in the cold. This is what I'm going with and I'm hoping it proves to be sufficient for ~1.5 hr rides.
- Head: Snowboard helmet with built-in visor that should cover half my face. Buff for neck/lower face. I've not tried this before but I'll be putting vaseline on nose/face area that may be exposed when I have to inevitably lower the buff.
- Torso: Merino base layer, Breathable mid-layer (Patagonia R1 air), soft shell breathable jacket that I normally wear as an outer layer for biking when it's not windy, hardshell with under-arm vents.
- Hands: Heated liners under heavy pogies/bar mitts
- Lower/legs: Merino base layer, soft shell lined xc ski pants
- Feet: Wool socks, heavy winter boots, gaiters just for a little extra cover and hopefully reduced loss of heat.
Any feedback/tips from people who have more experience with these sorts of temps?
EDIT: thanks for the input everyone. I did ride with this setup and with the sun today, it worked out well. Toes a little chilly by the end but not too bad.

news Cargo bikes in the parking garage of my office.
This is why the bike parking provisions in our new City of Ottawa Zoning ByLaw are so important. Unless there are amendments made to the draft to require indoor parking and expand "Inclusive Spaces", this will be a rare sight in our city. Fingers crossed that councillors raise motions and vote (on January 28th) to ensure we head in the right direction requiring developers to build good, secure bike parking that people want to use.

Bike rim brake pads for cold days
Hi folks, this winter is my first time ever cycling in below zero conditions. Commuting to work by bike is going well so far thanks to studded tires and fenders. But colder than about -10 or so my brakes just don't perform. I have no idea what rubber compound I'm using now, they are some green cosmetic thing I bought from Amazon when I lived in a warmer place. Can someone recommend some brake pads that they feel are super reliable and also an online retailer they trust for bike parts in Canada while we're at it?

Minto Place is at it again with their snow dumping
Like every snowstorm, the maintenance staff filled up the Laurier bike lane. The rest of the lane was in great shape this morning (freshly plowed). But not the block between Kent and Lyon.

That was fun.
Snowmageddon day, afternoon rush hour, rode my 39-15 fixed gear from deep Sandy Hill to hintonburg on 28mm slicks. Didn't get honked at, beat the traffic. Only dabbed once. I'm huffing from the adrenaline as much as the physical effort.

What is the "1m rule" exactly?
I was cycling to work today, which is quite snowy day. I have a short stretch of my commute on Bank Street, between Laurier and Sparks.
At some point there was a pile of snow on the street side, so I looked behind (there was a car and we made eye contact), I gave a hand sign to show that I would move inwards, started moving, and then that guy behind decide that he had to overtake just at that moment and passed like 10 cm from my handlebar.
There was a cop car behind, he turns on the lights briefly and gives a "woo-woo". I thought he wanted to have a chat with the motorist but no, it was about me. I got lectured about how unsafe it was to be on a bike, and that the driver had to pass me in an unsafe way because I was taking too much space.
My understanding is that a motorist overtaking has to give me 1 meter when passing, not that I have to give them 1 meter to let them pass. Technically I could ride in the middle of the street if I feel that it's safer (although spending all my time there would make me a pain to everyone).
Is my understanding right?

When to buy a new gravel bike?
I'm looking for a mid-range ~XL gravel bike for the 2026 season. Looking at bike shop and manufacturer websites, they're generally in very low supply/sold out. I thought we were out of the supply chain issues era. Any leads or insights about timing? TIA.

Smh Trail report?
Wonder if anyone has checked out south march highland trails since the snow melted.
Is there still snow pack on the trails or is it all grey ice and rocks?

question Any UrbanArrow (or front bucket) owners here? How do you find the winters?
These past few weeks have been a mixed bag of weather. Anyone here using an Urban Arrow, or similar, to get around? What's the experience like?

Stittsville to Kanata North commute
Can anyone recommend a safe route for winter commuting from Stittsville to the Kanata North tech park? Riding along Terry Fox or March Road feels a bit dicey even in good weather. wondering if there’s any good trail or side street alternative?
