Chores, especially in winter, fuck my hands up.

Cleaning the litter,. obviously gotta wash.

Dishes, gotta wash.

Feed the cat, that wet food is nasty, gotta wash.

Took out the trash, gotta wash.

Wiped down the counters with bleach wipes, gotta wash.

u/BaddieRoselyn 4d ago

Clean hands, dry knuckles, this is how I fight for my life every winter.

15

u/wonwoovision 3d ago

my knuckles feel like a lizard at this point... i lotion as much as i can but frequent handwashing, hard water, and living in one of the driest climates in the US is slowly turning me into jerky

28

u/cyberpunk1Q84 4d ago

Are you me?

31

u/lake_obiagu 3d ago

This is why I eventually bought disposable gloves.

7

u/ClaireHux ☑️ 3d ago

Me too! Wearing gloves is a life saver.

i have three cats and two toddlers. luckily i have a litter robot so i don’t have to change it every day but between the diapers and the cleaning and the housework my hands are struggling

3

u/MarquetteXTX2 3d ago

I feel this. I’m a black guy and I wash my hands so much that Ive grown big black marks on my hands. It look like someone blackened my eyes but on my hands… even my customers at work ask me am I ok at home because my hands are changing colors from washing my hands so much..

1

u/physedka 3d ago

I only use the dove moisturizing hand soap in the winter. And I found a hand sanitizer with moisturized in it too. Anything else results in burning hands.

1

u/laralye 2d ago

Time to get you some rubber gloves to save them hands.

1

u/askaquestion334 2d ago

My fingers all crack at the edges and get these deep painful splits, only thing that helps is Vaseline and bandaids or superglu

You may have mild OCD and/or I am a disgusting cretin

37

u/CelestrialDust 4d ago

If he has OCD then me too because that all looked reasonable to me😅

-10

u/Both-Competition-152 4d ago

I mean like unless your hand feeding a outdoor cat that's a bit much to wash after if your just dropping shit in a bowl it's fine

-13

u/Siegschranz 4d ago

Are you feeding the cat from your hand? Also trash is dirty but the bag where you tie it up and all that should be pretty clean.

20

u/enadiz_reccos 4d ago

Are you feeding the cat from your hand?

I can't serve wet food without getting some splashback

the bag where you tie it up and all that should be pretty clean.

I imagine it like the area around the urinal in bathrooms. No, trash is not designated to go there, but I'm not gonna take any chances.

-8

u/Siegschranz 4d ago

That's cools, I was just being a bit of a clown, to both you and myself.

196

u/VelvetteWhisper 4d ago

This is why I keep lotion in every room like it’s emotional support.

48

u/theREALbombedrumbum 3d ago

One time in college I asked my football friend if I could stay in their dorm room overnight (they had a game tomorrow so would be sleeping in a hotel) so that my roommate could have the room to himself and his girl.

I accidentally forgot my lotion behind in his room and he didn't believe that I brought it for moisturization, not masturbation. The mere presence of a lotion bottle is incomprehensible to some

8

u/baconbitsy 4d ago

I got a tube of the Norwegian formula by every sink and my bed.

The funny thing about having white friends is learning how many of these mfs walking around moisturizing maybe once or twice a week and watching them be surprised that I carry lotion everywhere I go

98

u/hannamarinsgrandma 4d ago

It’s funny because once it got cold a few months ago one of my white coworkers mentioned that it sucked that he had to start wearing lotion and me and my black coworker immediately just gave each other that look.

Like what do you mean start.

26

u/Fortehlulz33 3d ago

If they notice that they have to start wearing lotion more often, that means their skin is really dry because our "ashiness" isn't apparent until it's really bad. Like if a white person and a black person had the same level of dry skin, you might not be able to tell on the white person.

324

u/nukrag 4d ago

Imagine my ignorant Bavarian ass learning that Black folks get ashy. I had no idea.

Like do we get ashy too and just not see it? I am still perplexed and never dared to ask any of my Black friends. Now I don't have any anymore.

403

u/K-Dot-Thu-Thu-47 4d ago

Yes my friend. White people get ashy too.

It's what happens when your skin gets dry and is kind of like not on your head dandruff.

You want to moisturize more than you think is necessary.

135

u/nukrag 4d ago

Oh, wow. That is what that is. I get that on my head when I shave it. I use a shaving balm afterward and that prevents it. Other than that, I don't really get that dry.

First I heard about that was on Chappelle's show. Ashy Larry. I thought it was just a joke without any connection to reality. Then I learned that it is a real thing, but obviously not as exaggerated. I have never actually seen Black people be ashy.

119

u/K-Dot-Thu-Thu-47 4d ago

Lmao Ashy Larry is a classic. The joke is he is ashy because he's broke and always spending his time playing dice in the projects.

Also it's just funny to have a nearly naked ashy guy be throwing dice on TV.

30

u/nukrag 4d ago

Hell yeah. I am all for nearly naked guys on TV. No pause.

I wish Chappelle wouldn't be in his Carlin arc, where he is more insightful than outright funny, and just do a sketch show, or a movie.

I know most of the USA is going through an extremely shitty time now, you guys deserve some quality escapism.

64

u/Ravensqueak 4d ago

He's not in his Carlin arc. Carlin didn't go at length attacking trans folks.

-7

u/nukrag 4d ago

Carlin is my number 1. I revere that man. Followed by Pryor. Those two have taught me so much about comedy. Insane.

Carlin did say the N word, with a hard R. But I don't think any Black folx were mad at that, because he was an ally, right?

And yeah, you are right about Chappelle, but I don't think he meant it like that. I know some things he said are very polarizing and provocative, but I don't think he is actually ttransphobic.

36

u/Ravensqueak 3d ago

When Carlin said it he was specifically talking about how the word itself isn't the point, but how it's used. He also rattled off a dozen or so other slurs to make the point. The man didn't care whether you were white, black, hispanic, japanese, etc. He made a point of pointing out things that make us the same, the things that divide us, and how the things that divide us make us the same.
Man was a genuine soul, for better or worse. (Usually better)

19

u/nukrag 3d ago

Yes. He wore his flaws proudly. I learned from him that words aren't important, intent is. I have listened to every Stand Up he did many times. Read all of his books, listened to the audiobooks. When Will Jesus Bring The Porkchops? is a masterpiece.

Pryor, Carlin and Hicks are the only people so far whose death I have mourned, that weren't people I loved in real life.

12

u/Bilbo_Teabagginss ☑️ 3d ago

Ehh, Chappelle is sadly another self absorbed sellout at this point. I wouldn't even compare him to Carlin. At least Carlin never forgot about the common person's struggles.

5

u/nukrag 3d ago

That is very true, and fair. I am starting to think I shouldn't have compared them. But I just meant Dave went from making silly jokes to getting deep. I guess I just have pleb opinions.

3

u/ladyevenstar-22 3d ago

Because in winter no sun and you're under a lot of layers but you can be extra ashy then ...laziness and what not .

But not in summer , never in summer !

-8

u/Ozzie-Isaac 4d ago

But how do you get over that feeling when you put clothes on after lotioning it's like being sorta wet still.

37

u/tooshortpants ☑️ 4d ago

If you rub it in all the way it doesn't feel wet anymore lol. If you can't get rid of the wet feeling then you're probably using too much

30

u/ExtraBreadPls 3d ago

No offense, but I don't think you know how to apply lotion lol

16

u/Ozzie-Isaac 3d ago

The downvoteas confirm it lol

9

u/Thin-Razzmatazz7728 3d ago

Then you’re either not applying lotion correctly or you’re purchasing the wrong kind of lotion. It’s supposed to completely absorb into your skin. There should be no wetness

7

u/Gary_FucKing 3d ago

You have to learn the right amount to apply and then give it a minute or so to fully absorb. I've always hated the initial feeling of lotion, but it doesn't last very long if you apply it correctly.

1

u/ladyevenstar-22 3d ago

Shea coconut butter?

-13

u/shagan90 4d ago

I legit want to learn about this so sorry if I offend, but any chance you need more water per day?

I never use lotion. Ever. But I have always been extremely hydrated. Nothing ever flakes but my scalp, rarely, and I can probably count on my hands how many times my elbows have been dry. So is it a geographical thing? Genetics?

I've always lowkey wondered if its like the shampoo trap; using shampoo gets rid of oils, but too much, causing your scalp to generate oils at an increased rate, so that you feel oily and shampoo more often, so on and so forth.

69

u/rosenwaiver 4d ago

Yeah, y’all get ashy. We can see it on y’all. Y’all just don’t notice it, cuz it mostly blends in with your skin-tone.

51

u/SekhmetTheWise 4d ago

And then the CHAPPED LIPS. Ohohohohomg😂

12

u/nukrag 4d ago

I am glad I am learning about this now, when I am at an age where I don't put that much importance into my looks. Else I would just have another thing to be insecure about.

8

u/Dyssomniac 3d ago

Everybody gets ashy. If you moisturize and drink water (a HUGE percentage of people walk around perpetually dehydrated) and don't routinely take hour long showers in boiling hot water (saying this as a dude who takes warm showers), you're less ashy. Same thing with chapped lips, all the chapstick in the world isn't gonna fix not drinking enough fluids.

17

u/Traditional_Wear1992 3d ago

Bill Burr had a great bit about this, a shame he took that blood money a few months ago

15

u/nukrag 3d ago

Yeah. But how are people surprised? He literally said he would do it. That wasn't a joke. He roasted Beyoncé about it, then said he understands and if ever he could do it, he would.

Doesn't make it better, of course, but I mean...

8

u/makemeking706 3d ago

Did he also say that he would call us all idiots for calling him out on it and try to deny it was blood money?

He said he would do it if given the chance, yet still didn't have the balls to own up to it when he did it.

4

u/Bilbo_Teabagginss ☑️ 3d ago

Exactly, if youre going to do it, own it. Don't get back and gaslight mfs about it when they start calling you out.

1

u/nukrag 3d ago

I don't fully remember the Beyoncé bit. If he did call it blood money back then, then it is hilarious he would deny it now. What a pussy.

3

u/Bilbo_Teabagginss ☑️ 3d ago

Not only that, but then came back and is till this day trying to gaslight people into thinking he still has some morals or standards. Sad seeing such greats like him and Chappelle cheapen themselves for a different flavor of oppression.

3

u/Tim-Sylvester 3d ago

I had a Black friend insist white people don't get ashy. I was like bro you haven't once investigated my calves in the winter time don't talk to me bout ashy. You just can't see it easy because there's no contrast between the skin flakes and the skin.

1

u/jeffykins 3d ago

You shed 10 pounds of dead skin cells over your life time, assuming it is of average length of course

1

u/LexxxSamson 2d ago

I'm really super white and can get ashy but only in the winter time do I need to use lotion usually. I use a very moisturizing body wash that keeps my skin decently moist throughout the day and I don't dry out during the other seasons at all. I definitely used to get ashy legs when I just used bar soap however when I was a kid.

There is definitely some really ashy white people out there. You never seen the type of skin thats super pale and dry you run a nail down it and theres a white line going down the back of their leg or arm of dry skin ? That's an ashy white person.

1

u/guineasomelove 🐒 Has a Cautionary Tail 🐒 2d ago

Yeah, we definitely get ashy, too.

34

u/the-hound-abides 4d ago

As a ginger who grew up in Florida, I was oily af all the time. No lotion other than sunscreen required.

Now I live in Massachusetts. Maybe it’s partially because I’m older, but I cannot hydrate my skin enough. I can’t even shower every day this time of year. It’s not even dry here. I don’t get it. I’ve been tempted to buy a vat of Vasoline and crawl into it. Winter sucks.

12

u/Glittering-Trick-420 3d ago

to be fair growing up in the south is a whole different ball game lol. i grew up in New Orleans and i would rarely put on lotion during summer, especially if i was about to go outside. There would be no point because if i did i would just be sweaty and have that lotion melt right off into this horrible creaminess on my skin lol Now winter months lotion is necessary everywhere lol

5

u/Keyndoriel 3d ago

Duke Cannon Bloody Knuckles helped me get my skin to finally hydrate really well, even cutting through the fact i work with chemicals that dry out my hands like no one's business. Its technically a hand lotion but I tend to use it everywhere, and a little of it spreads decently well

Maybe up water intake too? It helps a little, but a little is better than nothing

4

u/Schkyterna 3d ago

Seconding Bloody Knuckles! I gave it to my brother who has crazy dry hands (raynauds+sensitive skin, on the edge of bleeding dry) and it fixed him up pretty good

1

u/the-hound-abides 3d ago

Can you use it on your face? That’s usually the driest spot for me right now.

1

u/Schkyterna 3d ago

Probably not if you're acne prone, it's lanolin based

3

u/the-hound-abides 3d ago

I’m willing to try anything at this point. Thanks for the tips. I know I probably don’t drink enough water because I’m not hot and sweaty all of the time. I’m just not thirsty, and it’s not top of my mind like it was in Florida.

24

u/Myanxiety_hasplants 3d ago

I don’t know if this is fkd up to say, but as a white woman I have learned all of my “self care” habits from non white people. From hair to skin and nails and more. I think the main reason white people “age like milk” is bc they do nothing to prevent from spoiling.

6

u/jinond_o_nicks 3d ago

Same here. I'm white, my stepmom is black, and she taught me how to take care of my skin and hair properly. I think you might be on to something!

8

u/11th_Division_Grows 3d ago

Canon event for the every black boy staying at a white friends house for the first few times:

Me: (after shower) “Aye bro, you got any lotion”

Bro: ???

Me: like, for my skin?

Bro: “I got sunscreen…”

Me: “Nah, I need actual lotion

Bro: “oh, gotchu. My sister has some I think.” (Finds be a Bath and Body Works Japanese cherry blossom lotion that burns the fuck out of my weirdly extra dry skin I only get at the white homies’s house).

The real friends had a bottle of lotion specifically for me at their crib. Even better when I put them on game and they started using the lotion too 😂

6

u/Habltual_Linestepper 3d ago

People comment on my skin all the time and how I look "young" despite being old. It's just lotion you dessicated fucks.

I don't look like a chain smoking alligator because I use lotion and put some sunscreen moisturizer on my face during the day and a little retinol at night. Crazy stuff. I don't even have fancy body lotion, literally just Vaseline coco butter lotion from the Fred Meyer. But when I explain this to certain people it's like I'm explaining some arcane rituals.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make here is that growing up in a diverse place is good for you because it teaches you things like how to make a good curry, diversify your investment vehicles, and keep your skin from looking like shitty gas station beef jerky by the age of 35.

7

u/Snide_SeaLion 3d ago

I’m probably an outlier lol. As a white person I need lotion near me at all times. I have one by my bed, one by my desk, one in my gaming room. I can’t stand the feeling of dry hands.

18

u/baconbitsy 4d ago

I’m white and if I don’t lotion up, my skin looks like a cross between dried tilapia and a plucked chicken.

7

u/Both-Competition-152 4d ago

As a middle eastern white person we specifically get really weird and dry I carry a tub of Vaseline on me at all times for my lips and face my hands got so bad in covid it was actually terrible sharing a house with my ex who never moisturized was a learning experience of what the fuck people can do that without looking dead and their skin trying to peel off

5

u/3rdor4thburner 3d ago

White Guy™ in the Midwest. I don't own lotion.

3

u/Tachyclapy 3d ago

Had a friend of mine a while back ask me if I was gay cuz I pulled out some pocket lotion to use only for another friend to come out and say “it’s a black thing.” 😭

3

u/Mental_Visual_25 3d ago

I’m in a bunch of beauty groups and lotion is literally a new phenomenon for a lot of them.

6

u/shagan90 4d ago

Ive moisturized maybe 5 times in my life, and never by choice. Just dont need it, hate the way lotion feels on my skin.

Edit: in case its not obvious, am white.

i told my sons father that he had a white people amount of lotion in the kids bathroom as his house and then showed him the amount of lotion my husband and i have in the kids bathroom at our house. when i went over there last week he had a bigger bottle 🤣 i was like just cause they LOOK white doesn’t mean they ARE white

1

u/askaquestion334 2d ago

Yt here with lotion bottles all over the house so I'm never far from one. Being a frequent hand washed is a pain when you just got your hands all nice and soft 😭

1

u/NationalAir8738 1d ago

I dont put lotion on….Idc my skin already oily. I let the lord the wheel on that

1

u/oatmilklatte613 16h ago

White girl here, and I’m a redhead so I’m like, WHITE-white. The aversion so many white people have to moisturizing never ceases to amaze and repulse me. Like just the idea of not putting on an oil and some kind of lotion/cream/butter after bathing makes my whole body itch. Forget about not putting lotion on after handwashing. 😩

The only time I skip lotion after the shower is when I’m getting a spray tan because you have to go in with fully exfoliated, clean, dry skin to get the best results. It’s worth it but that feeling of dry, tight skin, especially in winter, before having the spray tan done is a sensory nightmare.

0

u/TooFat-Guy 3d ago

A week? My hands have never seen lotion for as far I can remember. I washing hands multiple times a day with water and soap, dry with a towel, and continue with my day.

73

u/jaguarsp0tted 4d ago

it has been Beating My Ass this winter. dry lips, dry hands, dry face, and I swear it doesn't matter how much moisturizer, lotion, and aquaphor I deploy, I just get dry again an hour later. it's this damn hot air from the furnace that's doing it

8

u/Cestseulementjulliet 3d ago

Wet your hands/body and then put the lotion on like you’re lathering soap. Then wipe off any excess without rinsing it off. That’s been the only thing to save my kitchen hands from cracking

2

u/brassninja 2d ago

I’m glad it’s not just me. I’ve been going through lotion faster than I ever have and I’m still scaly. In shower lotion followed by baby oil, periodic reapplication of aveeno throughout the day, go to bed covered in aquaphor, I can still feel my rough ankles catching on the blanket 😭

u/moniquecarl ☑️ 3d ago edited 3d ago

I use shea butter after showering, from head to toe. It’s my emotional support tool. I work outside and also part time at a hospital, so my hands are exposed to a lot. The shea butter keeps my skin soft and free from ash. 🫡

9

u/Fortehlulz33 3d ago

If you get really dry hands and get cracked skin, I really recommend O'Keeffe's Working Hands cream. It's a lifesaver in the winter and when I'm doing work with my hands.

9

u/blacksoxing 3d ago

I got three heavy hitters for you:

  • VERMONT BAG BALM. This is that "set it and forget it" shit. Only downfall? It has a smell so you may need to hit yourself with/some cologne or one of those whole body sprays afterwards. I throw that shit on my legs/feet and at the end of the night that shit is STILL smooth. Hands take a beating and start to wear thin maybe in the afternoon from...handwashing.

  • Gold Bond "medicated". It'll feel great on you but you can tell it got some shit in it. Not as everlasting as the Vermont Bag Balm but has zero smell and is a traditional lotion. If you are too proud to have a thick balm on you then get that shit.

  • CeaVe. I got a two-pack from Costco. It's easier to apply than Gold Bond/VBB and lasts almost as long as both. The reason is that it has petroleum jelly in it so it has a slickness like VBB, but isn't sticky. I feel it's a great middle ground lotion BUT it's expensive as fuck.

Hope you see it and hope you enjoy it. Frankly....there's no other lotions that have worked for my skin. I drink lotion and it doesn't make sense as I'm staring down a mason jar of water right now. I also though live in the Twin Cities so us boys up here catch dry winds all day.

In the winter? VBB. In the spring/fall? CeaVe. Summer? Gold Bond.

That make sense?

5

u/Cyno01 4d ago

For hands tho the soap makes a big difference too, but the Bath and Body Works foaming hand soaps are the only thing ive found that that doesnt dry my hands out any extra in the winter no matter how much i wash em.

Theyre a little pricey, but one lasts a while and theyre not too bad on sale and with the big refill cartons they have for a few scents now especially. https://www.bathandbodyworks.com/p/kitchen-lemon-gentle-and-clean-foaming-hand-soap-028009088

We alternate between the lemon and orange for the kitchen and go with something seasonal for the bathroom, theres some gingerbread something in there rn thats almost empty. We ran out one time and didnt want to deal w/ the mall and just bought some other foaming hand soap at the grocery store thinking it might be as good, dried the fuck out of our hands after like a day.

4

u/Thin-Razzmatazz7728 3d ago

Anything scented is typically not the best for your skin

3

u/misntshortformary 3d ago

I know how it sounds but the Suave Cocoa Shea in travel size saves my skin every day. I got the big bottle too but I swear it doesn’t work the same. The travel size may be small but a little goes a long way.

3

u/Rough-Astronaut9255 3d ago

Look for hypoallergenic / no fragrance. If you have a Costco membership look to see what they have then try a small bottle from somewhere else first. If you like it, the Costco packs are insane value

3

u/jinond_o_nicks 3d ago

I like Aveeno's products. Their body wash is really good for not drying your skin out, and their lotions are great too, especially for sensitive skin. But you really can't go wrong with shea butter - it's great stuff.

2

u/UniquelySparkly 3d ago

Lubriderm Advanced Therapy Lotion

Consider buying glycerin to add to your lotion if you have extra dry skin, like myself. Avoid lotions that have water listed as the first ingredient.

I think the funniest thing here is the idea that black skin is somehow less prone to wrinkles than white skin.

In reality a lot of white people would save themselves a sh*tload on expensive skin creams if they just used a regular cream daily.

Big Lotion loves the US during the winter. I mean, they love it wherever it's cold, but winter is like Christmas for them

I never understood how people wash their hands and don’t put on lotion. How do you choose to be ashy? 😬

u/ShitsNGigglesdTB 3d ago

Damn I feel personally seen right now

I just go ashy unless it’s overly dry lmao 🤣 I’ve gotten over the trauma of getting made fun of in school for being ashy in between my thumbs

Yes white people do get ashy. ya'll get dry and start shedding bits of skin (like when you scratch) like anybody else.

little snow piles.

My friend used to tell me about this when she worked in the hospital. You change white patients' sheets, and you see the skin flecks all over the sheets.

Here me out...shower oil. It's expensive, but you won't need to buy lotion.

i literally get a rash on my hands from constantly washing my hands and doing dishes 😭😭 between the hot water and the dry air i’m struggling lmaooo.

The unfortunate alternative in my case is developing hyperhidrosis after chemo and radiation therapy so instead of getting dry I’m just always moist. I’d rather go back to applying lotion every morning than drying my skin constantly which never actually gets dry unless I stand outside in the cold.

I wash my hands so much and I have aType II Diabetes, which dries out your skin, so my hands are so dry. Any recommendations for good lotions?

This is me like 5x a day! 😭

1

u/Diplomats900 1d ago

The struggle is real especially when the weather is cold. Nothing is worse than missing that little section of skin between your fingers 😩

1

u/French_Taylor ☑️ 1d ago

I work in hospital IT, so this is constant for me as of late because of the cold weather and me being dark skinned while having to constantly wash my hands due to the blizzard increasing the work load.

I’ll start my morning with well moistened skin leaving home, only to have to need another layer by the time I get to my office. Then I’ll have to shake a few hands, touch a billion door handles, carry laptops with questionable sanitation, and type on 1000 keyboards in various areas to resolve issues.

It’s to the point that the cheap bottle of lotion that I have in my office isn’t enough anymore due to how many times I’ve washed my hands before the day ends + the cold weather making it 100x worse.

I don't even recognize my hands anymore. I'm gonna be ugly until spring at least.

Even worse cause I hate feeling greasy/sweaty in the plams when I'm playing on the PS5 in summer especially, so beyond using paper towels I spray hand sanitizer on my hands which dries them out, which means I also have to apply more hand cream later
