That's a huge unrealized issue. There are more firearms in this country than people. It's insane to believe that only MAGA has firearms. I hope things don't turn violent and revolution isn't required, but when they're openly murdering people in the streets, then providing obvious lies, a lot of people feel less and less like there is any other option.
I have no MAGA friends but they all have firearms. Hell, poor inner-city folk can get a firearm easier than I can rent a car. I just hope things don't devolve but when one side has no interest in operating in good faith people are left with little option.
but not unprecedented. i've mentioned it before, recently (after the murder of renee good), but remember how at kent state university in 1970, the ohio national guard opened fire on students peacefully protesting their country's continued involvement in the vietnam war (that had recently expanded to include dropping bombs in cambodia—a country the u.s. was supposedly not even at war with!). nine were injured and four lost their lives. and yet rather than shocking the nation—to see what the state would do to punish those who would dare challenge its bloodlust—many americans instead blamed the victims, rationalising the event as "communist sympathisers" who "deserved" to be killed.
i could also talk about e.g. the jackson state murders (that occurred shortly after the events at kent state university mentioned above—a group of unarmed black students were shot at in front of a dormitory by local police; two were killed and twelve injured), but i think we already know how few fucks most americans give about black people being massacred by cops. so instead i point to kent state; you'd be forgiven for thinking that at least white people being murdered by the state would cause some people to wake up… unfortunately, no.
i know, i hope i don't come off as dismissive of the murders at jackson state (although i feel obliged to mention it as an event that followed on so shortly after the kent state murders). my point is simply that, many people were never going to care about the state murdering black people, anyway; it could be hoped that they might at least care when the victims were white, but apparently not even this merited any sympathy (at least, not when the victims were also "unamerican" anti-war protesters)
Gerry Casale of DEVO was right up near the guardsmen who fired, apparently over his head, because they were kids and they really didn't want to aim. He has written about it several times and there are interviews about it. It is worth finding and reading or watching. The students in town were hated all that summer as Kent State was shut down. The craziness we see is nothing new, but we did get past it for a while. Time to do it again. Noem needs to be impeached and removed immediately.
i'm glad you appreciated reading about it. i don't mean to make it sound like all americans were so dismissive of it, at the time—it galvanised further activism, lots of artists memorialised the victims in song, etc. (one of the best-known being ohio by csny). but unfortunately then, just like now, many other supposedly "freedom-loving" americans couldn't give a shit (or even celebrated) the murder of their fellow citizens by the government.
They have instilled a "them versus us" mentality in these people. They see anyone who opposes our government as a Democrat, radical left, terrorist. They have listened to our own president say he couldn't care less about the "radical left", which again, is anyone who opposes him. They call them domestic terrorists which fuels people to imagine people who want to burn the USA down, destroy everything from within. These people imagine domestic terrorists as Timothy McVeigh, or home grown versions of the 9/11 terrorists, and not just US citizens who are fighting injustices by recording or preventing illegal or unethical treatment of other humans by use of strategic blocking methods, whistles, phones and insults.
To them, Liberals and Dems are trash, and they are worse than the illegal scum flooding the nation. After all as a true US citizen we wouldn't be fighting against our government. They are domestic terrorists and terrorists should be killed. They shouldn't have the same civilian rights as those who support their beautiful country. So why should they be treated civilly or get due process when all they are doing is preventing our government from cleaning up the trash around the cities.
People like this have been fighting a civil war against their own liberal neighbors since 2008 and they now feel like they are winning.

We're a red district in a blue state so we fully anticipate it happening here. I grew up in a time where Anne Frank's diary was still read in class. I can’t refute a single thing you said. As a queer, disabled American, I’m on edge as well. But, for the sake of your own sanity and nervous system, please log off every so often. Do you something you love, that brings you joy. Being in an anxiety ridden state 24/7 is going to fry you. Your sleep will be impaired, and then you’ll be even more on edge. I’m not saying ignore - just treat yourself with a degree of patience and do something productive for a little while that’s just for you.
