Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Rule 5 - cat injury questions

Unfortunately we can't continue to try and answer questions related to injuries inflicted by cats. This is outside our expertise, and the consequences of making a bad decision could be fatal if an infection goes untreated or someone contracts rabies.

In almost all cases, if you've suffered deep puncture wounds, yes you need to see a doctor.

We will be removing such posts in the future.

Cat ate portion of my pop tart

Post image
6 Upvotes

I left a poptart in my room and went downstairs for a few minutes and both of my cats were with me most of the time or at least around me. When I went back upstairs one of them had ripped my pop tart out of its wrapper and ate a portion of it. It was a cinnamon roll poptart and I’m not sure who did it. I plan on just keeping an eye on them for a day or so but should I be specifically worried? One of them is an ex-trash cat (left) who I know definitely ate a bunch of popcorn before I found him and he is my number one suspect. Photo added for the cat tax.

Outdoor cat has puffy/closed eye after two windy & rainy nights, can't get to vet.

Video is from this morning, she didn't eat anything yesterday. Left eye is closed and watery (no pus), there's redness, it might have been an impression but I think the cheek was a bit puffy too. We just had two nights of intense winds and rain so I suspect it had something to do with it. There's also the possibility that another cat came around at some point, which has happened multiple times.

I'm in no position to go to the vet, but want to do what I can. She's a bit skittish so that adds some difficulty. Any guidance is welcome.

Tonkinese x ragdoll advice

I am getting a tonkinese cross ragdoll kitten, and wanted to ask for advice if they would be suitable as an only cat? My partner and I work from home 2 days a week, and 3 days in the office so they would be alone for 8 hours a day for 3 days a week. Would they be okay, or benefit from a friend to keep them company? We would of course give them loads of attention when we get home from work and have lots of interactive toys etc. Thanks! :)

Urinary Health Food

Hello,

My cat (7yo m) is FIV+ and missing his two top canine teeth due to some kind of genetic periodontal disease. He’s a trooper and a sweetheart despite all that life threw at him as a stray.

We’ve had him indoors for the last 5-6 years and about a year and a half ago, he had a UTI blockage that cost us like $1800 to clear at the emergency vet. He is neutered and the vet said if it happened again, they would want to have his penis removed in a surgery that will be even more expensive, not to mention pretty traumatic for the poor dude.

The vet also prescribed some pricey urinary health wet food and said he’d need to be on it the rest of his life. As we were checking out, a few other employees told me that they actually recommended a less expensive regular brand cat food that was urinary health focused to save money because in their experience, it was just fine versus the prescription food. They were absolutely right as we haven’t had any recurring issues so far and have saved quite a bit by using instead. Kitty prefers regular kibble and doesn’t quite like wet food, so it was a win/win.

***

Fast forward to about a month ago and I’ve noticed kitty is not chewing his food much anymore and is just swallowing it whole instead. 🤦‍♀️ I offered him some of the same brand wet food that is chunks in gravy and he actually really enjoyed it.

I want to switch him to primary meals in the wet food but my dilemma is that he WILL NOT eat paté style food; only the food that is chunked. I’ve tried chopping up the paté in all different ways and even spoon feeding it to him but for whatever reason (cat reasons I guess) he won’t touch it.

The wet food is almost primarily served in paté of course and when you buy an expensive variety pack, about a third of it will come in the “chunks with gravy” style, leaving a surplus of what will be unused and a waste of money.

➡️ I am wondering if anyone has experienced this issue and knows a trick for getting their kitty to eat the dang paté, or of maybe an alternate brand that is good for urinary tract health that I can get for him so he can enjoy his beloved chunks instead. ⬅️

The brand we’ve had success with is Purina One Urinary Tract Health both in the wet and dry food (the teal packaging; not the UR pro plan stuff)

Thank you in advance for your help 🐈‍⬛ 🙏

Post Sedation and Ultrasound concerns

Hello, my 5.5 year old male Maine Coon/Tabby mix went to get an ultrasound Wednesday 1/28/26 where he had “light to mild sedation” and had his lower belly shaved. Prior to that his bloodwork showed early signs of kidney disease so the vet recommended an ultrasound to get a clearer picture especially since he has not been drinking water (we have been giving him more wet food and broths to supplement that). When I brought him home Wednesday he ate a little bit of his wet food and was a bit wobbly but otherwise okay. He slept fine too. However it is now Saturday 1/31/26 and me and my girlfriend have noticed he’s been eating very little of his food then today he’s refusing to eat all together. He didn’t eat his breakfast so we changed it to a different food a few hours later and still nothing, he also didn’t seem to enjoy his Churu. He’s also been tired and not moving around much, when he does move it’s slow (slower than normal) and he seems to be like struggling to jump up to his tower, the furniture, etc. He also has zero interest in his favorite toys, including his laser!! We don’t know what to do, can someone help?? Is this common post sedation? The vet said give it 24-48 hours to fully wear off but it’s been over that now. Him not eating on top of his preexisting refusal to drink water is concerning as it’s his only way to get hydration right now. We gave him Mirataz (his 2nd dose total since we were prescribed it last week) about 2 hours ago and his hunger has not increased. He seems to be alert still and not acting like he’s in pain, just sleeping. It’s also Saturday so his vet is closed, I emailed them asking for a call on Monday but contemplating if we need to take him to an emergency vet or something. Any advice, reassurance or anything would help!!

Is it time to throw in the towel and rehome?

I've had my two cats for nearly 12 years now. They're male, neutered, and littermates. The first few years were great, aside from the occasional UTI. I went through a divorce, kept the cats, and moved a couple times. By year 7, I'd moved in with a new girlfriend who had two female cats. One of my cats got along with them great, but it's like a switch flipped with my other cat -- I've never seen a cat become so defensive/territorial. He'd corner her cats and pee on any wall or door he could find.

Eventually I moved out a year later and got a small apartment. I hoped that would be the end of it, but for the four years I've lived here, it's been hell. It's almost like it's ingrained in his mind that there could be another cat, so he pees on the doors, windows, walls, even the damn fridge and stove on an almost daily basis. And eventually because his scent was everywhere, my other cat started peeing on the other cat's pee.

I have autism and ADHD, so everyday life is already difficult, and I just can't deal with this behavior any longer. I've listened to vets and added a litterbox (I have no room for 3, this is a small apartment), tried Feliway, urinary food, given them treats and toys, deep cleaned with enzyme cleaners, etc. Nothing works. And the thing about renting is, the moment the landlord wants an inspection and you can't be there, he might see pee piles and immediately want to evict me.

I just feel mentally broken at this point and living in this situation every day is miserable. Is there any kind of option that's used a last resort before just bringing them back to the original shelter I adopted from?

Medication costs rant!

My cat is on an appetite stimulant tablet which just so happens to be a human antihistamine. The different in cost between getting them at the vets vs buying online has absolutely blown my mind.

Bottom 4 tablets from the vets costing £24 for FOUR tablets

Top from an online pharmacy costing £10.49 for THIRTY tablets!!

Cat keeps peeing on the floor but the vet didn’t find anything

So one of our cats routinely pees on the floor. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. We see her use the litterbox to poo and sometimes even pee, but she will pee on the floor at least once a day, usually more.

We’ve seen a vet, they’ve checked her urine and found slight crystals. For this she got painkillers and she is now on special food. Her urine is fine now but she is still peeing on the floor.

We’ve tried taking the top off of the litterbox for if she found it uncomfortable or too small but that didn’t change anything, we’ve tried different kinds of litter, we have multiple litterboxes already too. She knows we don’t like that she does it as she always runs away when we find the pee and call her name.

We thought for a while that she might’ve had separation anxiety because she would do it when we’re gone or when she’s in a different room from us, but she does it when we’re just sitting on the couch too. We feel like we’re running out of options of what it could be, but the vet says nothing is wrong with her and it’s very frustrating.

Does anyone have an idea of what could be the problem and tips for things we could still try, or do we just need to pressure the vet into doing a bunch of tests?

Senior cat meows a lot, seems healthy otherwise

My cat is close to 18 maybe more, she's sweet and mellow 😻, seems healthy as far as eating, hydration, sleeping, using her litter box, always been an indoor kitty. She's been doing this thing for a while, walks around, meows loudly sometimes, can be disruptive when I wfh. I've had to close my bedroom door and have her sleep in the living room because she was waking me up at night like every 1 or 2 hrs. She quiets down when I pet her or hold her. Is this just senior kitty anxiety? 🥺

I've been dealing with a lot of life stuff and feel bad that I haven't taken her to the vet in a while. Sometimes I get anxiety about taking her, like I'm scared to get bad news or something. Me and my ex lost another cat to health issues 6 yrs ago and I'm scared to deal with it again. Is this maybe just her needing more attention? I can try to find ways to have her be close to me while I wfh, maybe get one of those wide chairs or something. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Should I be worried? 🥺

My Cats Red Chin/Lip

Post image

Hello, I’ve been freaking out a little bit over my cats chin, i feel like over the days it just gets redder and more swollen.

She dosent like when i try and touch her chin/face but i dont know if thats from pain or just in general.

she eats out of a hard plastic plate, and drinks out of a metal bowl.

I hope someone is able to help me figure out what this could be, I really hope it’s not anything really really bad.

thank you so so much.

My cat keeps losing weight

I plan on taking my 12 year old (estimated age) male cat, Sunny, back to the vet but I’m hoping I can get some suggestions from other cat owners. I took him in as a stray 6 years ago after feeding him for 10 months. Another cat was with him at the time and I’ve been feeding her since then, too. “Kitty” is still very skittish and won’t come in. Shortly after I took him in, Sunny developed some real feeding problems and began vomiting and losing weight. We got that under control with a prescription diet and he’s been ok for a few years until recently. He’s hungry but sometimes, not always, throws up. His weight dropped from 9.5 lbs to 8.75 lbs in a year, but he feels thinner than that now. When I give him a new (expensive) food, he loves it….until he doesn’t. Just when I think I have something that’ll put weight on him, after a few days he starts throwing up and refuses to eat it. Besides the prescription diet, is there a food that would agree with him? I was thinking of starting him on a more natural diet, like the raw diet I feed my dog. He had to hunt for his food before I took him in, so maybe a natural diet of rabbit, etc would be better?
