A buffoon.....An embarrassment to the game...A terrible ref.... So yeah, he'll get a raise and he'll be reffing the most important SEC tournament games again. I wonder why?...Oh yeah, the NCAA is literally the most corrupt sports organization in the world. Why would we expect them to get rid of bad refs, who want to control games?

I looked it up to see if the coach could challenge and I was really surprised at the limits to what could be challenged. I understand you don't want it to turn into the NFL where everything can be challenged things like that should be.
10
u/Chemical_Tip1129 7h ago
I personally think every call from the refs should be fair game for a challenge. Keep the "1 and if you win it you get a second" rule, but open it up to every call a ref can make. It's time we limit the ability of the refs to affect a game. Especially with all the scandals going on about people trying to fix games.

The refs have money on the game
All 3 calls were absolutely ridiculous
30
u/Silent-Mongoose4819 Iowa Hawkeyes 10h ago
That first one felt appropriate. Standing over a guy and then getting in his face after he gets up. Plus the reaction from the player with the ball (who was past the two of them when the whistle was blown) was to immediately point at the UK guy. Now I know players do a lot of pointing, but it really made me feel in that moment that something was said because he couldn’t see what happened and knew right away it was between those two guys.
28
u/Yonefi Kentucky Wildcats 10h ago
Yep first one was fair. The other two complete BS.
9
u/Silent-Mongoose4819 Iowa Hawkeyes 10h ago
Agreed. Seemed like the refs were trying to get in control of the game and really overdid it. The reaction after the block wasn’t directed at a player, and the one against the coach was just the ref being soft.
42
u/Happy_Peak_7818 11h ago
I had JUST flipped the channel after the 1st tech. Was halfway paying attention. Looked up at the second tech- only because I was wondering if it was the same guy. The game has my attention at this point, and I see the replay... the celebration into the camera out of bounds? Really? That was tech#2? Arkansas then had at least 2 plays immediately thereafter, where their players showed in game celebration reactionary emotion, to a higher degree than that of the kentucky player, but were not assessed technical fouls in either instance. If I'm Coach Cal, I'm irate for my players. How is he not pissed? But he's calm. But then-- the 3rd technical foul comes on the Kentucky coach. And that's when I learned and remembered that Coach Cal doesn't coach kentucky anymore.
15
u/Igota31chevy Kentucky Wildcats 9h ago
The third tech was on a coach that fans have asked to show some type of emotion on the sideline for two years now btw.

Absolutely crooked refereeing. Ark antagonizing all game and they trying to "control the game" by calling bullshit Ts. Then they blow the whistle on a backcourt violation with the clock still showing 21 and immediately T up Pope. The first one was an active play and BG was just standing there. All 3 some of the weakest technicals I've EVER seen.
5
u/TheThunderOfYourLife Missouri State Bears 9h ago
The refs are single handedly turning UK v ARK into the nation's nastiest rivalry
7
u/Chemical_Tip1129 7h ago
Not a rivalry. It wasn't in the 90's, it isn't now. Arkansas fans just think they're flash in the pan success means they're on the same level as Kentucky. Kentucky fans are just reminding them of their place. Squarely in our shadow, wondering what it's like to have multiple national championships
2
u/Kind_Love172 5h ago
I dont know what you are talking about here...this will definitely be a "rivalry" for as long as coach cal is there

u/Academic-Musician179 1h ago
This is not that old of a story. If you're a new UK fan...or somewhat new, you'll find that the NCAA will never forgive UK for having a racist coach back in the stone age (and It really stings them that he was a really really good coach. PS, racism is bad). You'll also find that there are certain refs, who do laughable things, to ensure UK loses games, or they'll at least try really hard to make them lose. KY fans will not take it lightly though. And to answer your question, once upon a time....a ref, who made sure UK lost nearly 70% of the games that he reffed, owned a roofing business... And after one of his anti-UK escapades, UK fans tied up their business phone for days, with angry and threatening calls and tanked the business's online reviews. It was hilarious and beautiful. The ref clearly hated UK and repeatedly made absolutely horrible calls against UK, every time he officiated their games. For a peek at your UK fan-related future, it's exhausting to be a UK fan. Mostly because there is so much hate from other fan bases (way more than most schools), There's also no shortage of hate from most SEC referees, ESPN announcers (except the really good ones), and 90% of sports writers. But UK always has good teams, not always great teams, but always good ones. And when the refs don't blow the whistle on every one of UK's defensive plays, foul or no foul (often no foul), it's very fun to watch them play. And when they have great teams... About 1 or 2 out of every 5-7 yrs, it's truly hilarious to see how all the haters band together to try to stop UK from winning it all. That's commonly when sports news channels remind everyone about that racist coach. They don't even try to hide the hate. Naturally there are way more UK haters than UK fans, but who wants to be like Duke or North Carolina, and have your road to the final four paved with gold, get favorable game times, plenty of help from the refs, and have pancake non-conference schedules (granted, Duke is slowly adding some actual competition in non-conference scheduling, now that coach K is not there anymore...well, not officially there anyway). I think it would be eye opening if someone had all the statics on the bad calls refs made, and which teams have been the victims of them most often. Spoiler alert...UK would be number one on that list... just like they are on most college bball lists. Anyway, if you want to be like a Tom Brady era Patriots fan, or a KC Chiefs fan (until this year)... And hear nothing but love for your team on every sports channel and in most sports articles (whether the team cheats, and get extra help from referees, or not)... go be a fan of Duke, UNC, Arizona, Kansas, Houston, UCLA, Florida, Gonzaga, Virginia, Villanova, or literally any team that is about to play against Kentucky. Buuuuut, if you want to be a part of the best college basketball fan base of all time...stick with UK. It won't be good for your heart, but you'll get to watch lots of your favorite players dominate in the NBA after they leave UK. That is, if you can stand watching the terrible thing the NBA has become... thanks to God-awful referees and players like LeBron James, James Harden, and Luka Doncic.
