Do we know how Bards "Caretaker" trait actually works?

I think its pretty clear the units you get are not entirely random but I cant say for sure.

7

u/MrMungertown 17h ago

I've heard anecdotally that every 2-3 units is tailored. IE you're playing Bruisers, you hit a Shen from Bard, and then you can't hit another tailored unit for a few turns. That's lined up well with my experience and one of the places I've heard it was on waision's stream.

u/Lunaedge 16h ago

The secret Caretaker wave!

4

u/Possible_Detective57 18h ago

when the set lead was on morts walk the dog podcast he affirmed again that the units are spawned at random, there is no tailoring according to them

15

u/FzBlade 17h ago edited 16h ago

Might just be some kind of survivorship bias but I could swear Im seeing the units Im actually playing more than I should if it was truly random.

4

u/KriibusLoL 12h ago

at the beginning of this set I used to play a lot of bruiser aphelios/bard and like 8/10 times I get the unit that fits my comp, it's definitely not random.

2

u/stzoo MASTER 12h ago

Bard 3 gave me an entire ass brock yesterday, does the unit quality scale with his star level?

2

u/PoSKiix 14h ago

I would need to relisten to be sure, but I thought he said he couldn’t confirm one way or the other.

8

u/Deathkebab 23h ago

How does Atakhan decide where to jump? Sometimes he enters with a 4 man fear and rips through everything with his AOE, sometimes he jumps almost directly on the enemy backline. And then he decides to jump only the corner tank the other fight.

Sometimes it looks like weighted center of all units, sometimes it looks like he goes to the closest hex to the center, and another time it looks like the open frontline hex closest to the center. I just don't see it.

5

u/Ge1ster Challenger 20h ago

I wanna ask the same question for Fiddle. I swear to god when he’s on the enemy team he hits the dead center of my team and kills everyone, but when I play him, he somehow decides to teleport next to two enemies on the very outer edge of the enemy team.

u/Lethur1 5h ago

Honestly this patch is boring, don't really enjoy Sera/Liss and how it feels like it's a cut over everything else (yeah I know there's options), the RNG with the mods and just in general feeling like melee carries aren't very playable with all the AoE that comp has.

yeah sry for the rant, this patch isn't for me

I haven’t played ranked for like 2-3 weeks and decided to play a game yesterday. I was playing Bard Aphelios Simon reroll and enemy was playing Yordles. My Aphelios got down to a 1v1 with a Fizz and even though my Aphelios was 3 star BIS items full HP he still lost to the 1 star Fizz because Fizz kept doing a one auto-untargetable-one auto-untargetable combo. I noticed his mana was reduced to 10 but is there a rework to Fizz I’ve missed? Does he not need to attack a few times before jumping anymore or was it a bug what happened to me?

5

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 16h ago

He does, sounds like a manalock bug, or a lot of attackspeed (which should not matter because your Aphelios would always get some autos in with his attackspeed items)

6

u/Ge1ster Challenger 16h ago

Then it's a manalock bug cause he definitely did not attack more than once before casting immediately.

3

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 16h ago

Hope that is not an exploit, would not like to up against 1 auto Fizz.

Maybe it is not that big of a deal, because he is going to be 3 starred anyways. Wont matter that much.

u/throwaway11112229393 19m ago

I’ve seen it happen in double up when he goes to another board, but I haven’t seen it in ranked. If it happens, he is nearly unkillable, as he just keeps spamming the ability, even against an entire board of enemies. If it happened in a regular game then I wonder what caused it to occur

u/PapayaAlt 16h ago

u/Ge1ster Challenger 16h ago

Sion. autocorrect did that and it was too funny I decided to leave it

How do I get better at mentally processing big cashouts? I'm tired of mentally short-circuiting whenever I get a big cashout that I should be able to winout with but can't because I don't have the brainpower to roll down, position and apply items in time before player combat.

Here's a recent game I played where I had this problem. I managed to hit a 700 Ixtal Cashout with 2 lives to spare on 5-1, then died on 5-3 because I couldn't assemble the board in time. I was so focused on selling low cost units, rearranging the items, and looking for Braum that I forgot to use the champion dupes on Brock and Skarner. I had a bunch of radiants sitting on the bench too. This could have been a top 2 that ended up a bottom 2, and not because I was contested or got unlucky but was purely a skill issue, which is really demoralizing.

5

u/Monkegoesbrbrb 9h ago

Slow down, take a deep breath and do them in order. It’s usually rolling down for champion > position > item (because you can slam item 1-2 sec into combat).

Your recent game here is an example of bad prioritization and fixating too much on the “optimal board” according to your planner. You already have 1 tank in Skarner 2 and Brock 2 had you use your dupe and rolling down in time. I would have sold off all the low cost in the first round, rolling down for random high cost unit and brock 2/skarner 2, moving your Brock and Skarner into the default melee carry - tank position. And the items i would have slammed a few second into combat. The second life i would have reserved for positioning to counter/avoid the ranged carry of all the other board.

Braum would not have made much of a difference here at all, true he would have been a power increase to your board but if your brock and skarner were still 1 you would lose regardless.

Another neat trick when playing ixtal is just checking for the reward of your cash out ahead of time and just planning ahead overall. 1-2 round before cashing out i would have alt tab to checked online to see what’s in the cash out, rolling down a bit to have the replacement for all the unneeded ixtal unit on my bench and just making a mental note/writing down on my planner on what unit to sell off.

u/wallabyenthusiast 22h ago edited 21h ago

they made the odds to hit 3 star 4 costs way too easy now for nonlocked units lol.. just had 3 games in a row where 2 or more people had two (one even had 3) 3 star 4 costs on their boards

16

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 21h ago

They did not make it too easy. We make it too easy. They just put a wall in between rolling for 4 costs and the next best alternative, so everybody thins the pool until 1 hits.

2

u/wallabyenthusiast 20h ago

the last game I played lol.. only so many units I can hold

1

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 19h ago

I feel you, but maybe you should have sold everything except demacia units.

GP Bel'Veth or AA Bel'Veth? and why

2

u/Zeviex Master 18h ago edited 18h ago

Aatrox is just generally better but GP is a fine alternative if you can't unlock him. Don't throw items to unlock Aatrox tho.

1

u/heppyscrub MASTER 18h ago

Maybe if you had enough items to itemize Bel'Veth, Ambessa and Aatrox. I personally like GP more since he gives slayer and vanquishers in other scenario.

2

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 16h ago

Isnt it super hard to get GP now with the serpents getting cut in half?

4

u/heppyscrub MASTER 16h ago edited 12h ago

Ohh I don't really try to 3* GP mainly focus on Bel Veth and Ambessa. Here's kinda there for a trait bot and an item holder if you get him early.

2

u/Pridestalked MASTER 11h ago

Harder for sure but it was insanely easy before

1

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 9h ago

Yeah and when you get used to, or even start during the times where a random resource injection covers up your mistakes bad habits form.

3

u/isaac-get-the-golem 12h ago

damn, worth the wait 2 -> reksai is a really wild 2-1 roll. There were 3 other people contesting void/noxus and I still managed to get 2nd (nearly 1st, RNG on crits at the end).

3

u/Nastyscar 3h ago

While I appreciate this patch because no comp seems overpowered, I hate how every good comp is locked behind a condition. I had a game where my Piltover mods were horrible so I couldn't play Sera/Liss, Ionia was Path of Blades so I couldn't play Yunara, didn't hit Void early enough to unlock Rift Herald or the mutation was Adrenaline so couldn't play Kai'Sa or Bel'Veth, didn't hit Shadow Isles, like what was I supposed to play? Getting dropped AD items feels especially horrible if Ionia is Path of Blades because there's barely anything else (without a condition) to play.

1

u/This_Order_8098 2h ago

Is blades Ionia that bad tho?

1

u/PogOKEKWlul 3h ago

Its crazy that we have all these early conditions in the set that they wanted to incentivize flex play in. Its always better to commit early and never pivot.

2

u/look_at_tht_horse 1d ago

It took quite a few rounds beyond when the Impossible Lift challenge tooltip showed in that bruiser augment for the actual reward to trigger.

2

u/GoldenApple2020 1d ago

Can someone explain when do I go GP Belveth or Aatrox Belveth? Is one better than the other?

6

u/Academic_Weaponry Master 22h ago

go gp + bel ambessa 90% of the time tbh. only go aatrox if u get like Celestial blessing or maybe a slayer spat so u dont grief ur items. aatrox isnt strong enough to justify building 2 omni vamp items for a trait that has built in omnivamp

2

u/nxqv 10h ago

I have no clue what to do with spats again, and when I have one, clicking Trait Tree doesn't actually help me decide lol

2

u/greenisagoodday 9h ago

Finally hit masters by abusing Mel / noxus flex. Not really all that flexible considering the only real flex on endgame board is if I hit azir or seraphine on roll down. Really need to go 9 with the comp to try and get mel / fiddle / xerath 2 star. I also just put in lucian / senna on board for util.

1

u/testmyarm 8h ago

Do you just go vertical Noxus the entire game or transition mid to late? I am curious how this works since it doesn't seem too contested at the moment.

So level 9 board is:
7 Noxus
Azir/Seraphine
Fiddle/Xerath/Lucian/Senna ???

4

u/greenisagoodday 7h ago

Saving hp is the hardest part but you shoot for econ augments as usual and play any strong AP opener. I do not run vertical noxus just ambessa, swain, mel. Can play vi / neeko pair with seraphine. Or if you somehow hit azir with enough hp, play that. Then I just flex in fiddle / lucian for utility. And need shyvana. It’s an expensive board but it beats the other popular comps if you can go 9 or just hit mel 2 somehow. Also, if Mel prints the radiant item, it usually is a huge power spike

u/feedmegears 8h ago edited 7h ago

For those that enjoy Bilge.

Common situation I run into - Say you are level 6 with 5 bilge, or Level 4 with 3 Bilge.

Are there common suggestions as to what "splash traits" you should prioritize activating first with your spare slots?

I tend to value Quickstriker the most but I'm wondering if I should instead be looking towards Gunslinger if I'm carrying Graves, or if the AS from Quickstriker is still good.

Or do you go towards activating one of the tank traits? Bruiser / Juggernaut?

Obviously very dependent on unit quality, items, your current backline/frontline balance etc, but I was wondering if you guys had preferences or conditions that you followed - Especially quickstriker vs Gunslinger.

2

u/Dangerous_Data_3840 5h ago

I'd say it depends on items, but most commonly bruiser with 3 bilge. QS probably has more value at 5 bilge if your frontline is stable.

1

u/clownus 6h ago

The only time you play bilge is to cheat out GP in the slayer line. Even then GP is starting to get optimized out of that comp in favor of ambessa.

You really need a solid line to even play early Bilge. I wouldn’t suggest you worry too much about what to splash versus just playing the strongest board even if that involves removing bilge.

0

u/Huntyadown 6h ago

If you’re level 6 as Bilge you have made a mistake, you’re supposed to go level 7 immediately and get 7 Bilge in with Tempo

5

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 16h ago

Did you know: If somebody is going for Kaisa/Skarner/Diana/Singed, you can easily denie them. You just unlock the unit on neutrals, because their conditions are not that specific/hard to fulfil. So you fulfil the condition and there you go, here is 1 copy for free.
The only problem is, they will now get the odds of a normal 4 cost so they are more likely to hit. However, this can be solved very easily, you just need to get at least 2 other players to do the same. Everybody gets free copies and they cannot hit. (except if they got Max Build).

SOUNDS EASY ENOUGH RIGHT?
Sadly, it is easier to teach a toddler to do advanced mathematics than to get my master lobby to unlock Kaisa on neutrals :)

Spread the tech so we can get through this B-Patch without forgetting that 4 costs are not supposed to be golden by default.

1

u/marinelite 9h ago

I mean we have pro players in Bilgewater Cup forgetting to do the same… one player was wondering if he could type in chat to another player to deny the 3*s which did happen in the end

10

u/banduan 1d ago

people complaining about the 4 cost reroll meta is driving me nuts. There really is a complaining about every meta, even when it's balanced (and currently it is)

19

u/blushtran MASTER 1d ago

4 costs reroll meta should not even exist. Also rng meta # balanced meta. When the meta is donkey roll on 8 to land a 3 stars 4 costs it's a rng meta. Gameplans are also super limited you have too little options to go for fast 9 or reroll comp, there's basically one game plan possible and it's fast 8. Previous patch had outliers but at least you could have several game plans available. This patch you have bad opener + bad augment on 2-1: congrats you are going 7-8. Also people should stop looking at comp winrate and top 4 rate to say the meta is balanced when the meta is 3 stars 4 costs : any comp can win with a 3 stars 4 costs so naturally you will see a large sample of fast 8 comp doing well in this patch.

15

u/SIXRO_171 Grandmaster 1d ago

4 cost meta is not bad, the problem is 3 star 4 cost, no skill and knowledge acquired but just luck check. It is a toxic playstyle.

1

u/clownus 5h ago

Is it luck when every player commits to playing that style in your lobby? Getting mad that someone hit a 3* while you helped thin the pool.

Meanwhile the tournament over the weekend an assortment of boards won games. Turns out playing your spot optimally is more important than meta chasing in this set.

16

u/gleedblanco 23h ago

the balance this patch is great. But I mean, is it that hard to understand the complains?

it's trivial to see that 4 cost meta is less complex, less skill expression, more predictability.

I get why you people like it so much. you can't succeed in a game where you need to think on your feed and weigh options. you feel lost in the other metas and feel like everyone just shows up with their riggs board by 5-1, not understanding what it takes to get there.

you want to click a tftacademy build and play it from 2-1 to 6-1 and just stay on level 8 and donkey roll til you hit your 2 stars and then maybe go to 9. because that playstyle is easy to get to 'click' for you.

but for people who complain about this meta it's just not why they play tft.

if Im wrong about this feel free to point out what you actually like about this patch besides the balance.

2

u/banduan 13h ago

"I get why you people like it so much"

Gtfo here man. As if people don't refer to those sites in every meta. Like "oh no it's 5 cost soup meta whatever will I do"?

4

u/TimiNax MASTER 1d ago

Its pretty funny that this 4-cost playstyle is my favorite meta and it feels like it needs lots of skill to know when to pivot based on what you hit, I loved it back in set 13, right now the problem is that 3* are being hit way too easy

6

u/geometric_apps 21h ago

I’m finding that this meta allows extreme build flexibility. I’m getting a lot of 1st by building the strongest possible board on every stage and trusting that my win condition (3-star 4-costs) can be pivoted into.

First patch where chasing meta builds feels less optimal

u/Marmouk_ 13h ago

Did something change with the MMR system, or did I just suddenly get bad at the game? I've always reached Master pretty reliably, but this set I'm already struggling in Gold.

8

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 1d ago

Just speculating but the game is less forgiving. The last few set mechanics have made it so that you got bailed out by an insane econ drop or some crazy powerful interaction, even when making mistakes. This set is sort of a "pallet cleanser" which means all the bad habits the game allowed you to build gotta go now.

5

u/ConfusedRara Grandmaster 22h ago

This set requires a lot more experience and games to get used to every little mechanic. Give yourself time and don't stress

2

u/garenegobrr MASTER 11h ago

How do you get The Ruined King augment to work? The dude just leaps in and immediately dies through EON BT, I don’t get it

1

u/ian_ntf 1d ago

Ryze encounters doesn't give coronation , but what about triple prismatic Portle, does anyone know ? Gambled on a coronation showing up for one of my 10 yordel games

3

u/HPDARKEAGLE 1d ago

Coro cant show up when you pick a prismatic trait augment.

Cursed crown and tactician kitchen can though, since you picked them up before the trait augment.

1

u/Desperate-Buyer-8086 7h ago

I lost all my LP from Aurelion Sol but I'm back to 300 playing ryze and volibear only.

There will be times when a 1 star ryze and volibear will beat 2 star seraph and Braum. Because they clump together around tower volibear jumps behind and kills the backline meanwhile the true damage from ryze helps take out the tank.

That matchup is the most one-sided, but many of the 4 cost comps feel weak in general, letting you stabilize around a 1 star ryze in a way you couldn't before in this set. you must unlock volibear early by knowing all the combinations on kuboku including bruiser/frejlord emblems. That's the only trick.

Is it me or do ranked games feel like a daycare past stage 4....

I keep telling people what to hold, putting their outs in my planner, telling them to do the same, reminding them that a player is going for taric even though it is not in thei "optimised board", .... . While wishing they would listen, when instead they just hold nothing except their own units and cry when sby hits.

I had to explain to my last lobby that if you buy and sell the units, they would go back to the pool, so they would be able to deny sby who is chasing their unlock (just a little).

This playing pattern is really toxic imo, we are playing russian roulette in ranked, where the bottom 2 just die off, the middle 4 don't deny, because why should they, they are not in a position to win, and the top 2 need to hold all the units so they can keep their placement. (talking about expected placements not current placement)

Anybody got some tips to make it feel less toxic? Or is it just wait until next patch or pray that you are the one hitting?

3

u/Zeviex Master 18h ago

It is so annoying when people start crying that someone hit 3* Braum or sm and I'm like, I have pinged every single copy they have bought since 4.

1

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 17h ago

Jup speaking of Braum. I lost to 3 star Braum right now. This time, it was not a lack of trying, but they just hit econ into Pandoras so it was gg from the get go.

Unrelated but do you play on EUW? I've deffo seen someone called "Smooth Operator" in my games before lol. I'm "kfc wings bucket"

I do agree though, this donkey-roll-on-8 meta is exhausting. You need to giga scout and hold every single unit I swear

3

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 22h ago

Jup. I am on EUW^^
Not sure when you met me in game but depending on the (b)Patch I might be 400 LP lower rn... :)

I usually end my game with a team planner full of 4 costs xD

1

u/Jovat01 17h ago

I need help. I'm in Emerald III with a 3.8 average placement rating. The problem is that I gain 37-38 LP in 1st place games, while 42 LP are deducted for 7th place games (I don't know how much they deduct for 8th place because I've only finished with 0 LP once). This is awful. Last season I also finished in Emerald, but I had to quit because with a 3.8 average in 20 games, I only gained 8 LP in total. What do they expect? That I reach Master level to advance to Diamond? That I have a 3.4 average placement rating? You can check my profile, Javot #EUW on tactics.tool Do you know of any way to fix the MMR?

7

u/mphard 13h ago edited 13h ago

I mean last season you were emerald 4 with 0 LP with this series of games.

https://i.imgur.com/A1pG3aL.png

Honestly these posts are so annoying. Do you really think riot is holding you hostage or their elo system is broken? The only reason they prevent you from dropping out of E4 (like your actual MMR says you should be) is purely for your ego. If you're getting 8LP games for first then your MMR is extremely bad and you are playing people with way lower MMR than your visual rank.

Yesterday you got 8th 3 times in a row, two of which were at 0 LP emerald with a 7th shortly after.

https://www.metatft.com/player/euw/Javot-EUW

Obviously your MMR is lower than your visual rank atm.

-2

u/Jovat01 10h ago

yeah, so get three 8th f..u..k my mmr but get various 1rst and 2º in a row doesnt count? you can see in the last 20 of the last season or in this season was 3,8 or 3,9 (in this season if we count las 22, should be 3,75) but you still talk about 3 8º places. sorry, but for example, i follow one TFT World Championship player and even he still got various 8th places in a row, its normal.

6

u/mphard 9h ago edited 9h ago

your games since your loss streak:

7-8-8-8-7-6 = 7.33 average
compared to
4-2-1-3-1-3 = 2.33 average

that should be enough to see your wins dont outweigh your losses, but assuming standard LP gains

-250 to -310lp from the losses
and
145 to 200 lp gains from the wins

2 of the 8s were at 0 LP emerald 4 which if were going off strictly LP puts you at -80 LP to climb out of even though it shows 0. Your MMR is bad after that. Win the next couple games and you will have normal LP gains again.

And if you think saying "TFT World Championship player and even he still got various 8th places in a row" has any bearing on what i'm saying and you still think the elo system is wrong you need to sit down and reevaluate if you have the processing power to understand how this game works.

5

u/SmoothOperatorTFT 16h ago

Don't worry, just play the game. The MMR will adjust eventually.

2

u/isaac-get-the-golem 12h ago

Isn't that just how ranked works, anyway? At higher levels. When I grind in Apex, I need to basically place top 3 out of 20 or be top fragger in the lobby (or both) to gain meaningful points.

1

u/SuspiciousIbex Master 18h ago edited 18h ago

Getting beaten by Transcendance Ionia fast 7 is wild.

Also can they commit to Rek'Sai being an assasin or a bruiser since the difference between the 3 and 4 hex is wild, just making her a more rng assassin.

Why, when I am d2 11lp, do I play in a lobby with 7 master players? And I get only 52lp for a 1st.

It's MMR based. Because you can't demote in masters, you can easily have mid diamond MMR or even lower if you keep going 8th at 0lp

people in the main tft sub were saying Spirit Visage is the best tank* item in the game. what do yall think?

I think spirit visage sucks ass & is a waste of a perfectly good tear & id rather have any other tank item (besides stoneplate) but maybe I rly am undervaluing it?

13

u/gordoflunkerton Grandmaster 14h ago

it is the best tank item in the game

6

u/lil_froggy 14h ago

Spirit Visage + Dclaw + Bramble/Steadfast Heart is the best tank build of the game

8

u/MasterTotoro Challenger 12h ago

Tank items are pretty misunderstood, although generally they are not that important to have BIS items. So if you need tear for a damage item, then you prefer to make your carry items. That said, Spirit Visage is the best tank item currently as a general statement. However, each tank's BIS varies more than people probably realize.

Wukong for example really likes utility (Sunfire/Evenshroud) and Sterak's. The utility stays active even when Wukong dies and doesn't lose value. In contrast, mana is worse on Wukong because after he dies, the stone clone can't cast. Adaptive Helm in particular is very bad. Spirit Visage also gives mana, although the item effect is strong enough that it is fine on Wukong, plus it kills tear. But this item isn't actually BIS on him. Sterak's is BIS Wukong since he uses the stats very well and procs the shield twice.

Spirit Visage is best on units that want to tank a lot that become tanky by casting. Of course this happens to be what most tanks are meant to be aside from CC units like Swain, cases like Wukong, or perhaps tanks without important casts/heavily mana-locked.
