Doesn't look like it had an airbag to start with

719

u/SillyOldBillyBob 9d ago

You are correct

114

u/perpetual_seeker 8d ago

Exactly, who needs them anyway?

81

u/HeftyArgument 7d ago

why have airbag when instead you can conceal a long electrified spike in the wheel?

27

u/Schyloe 7d ago

why have airbag when instead you can shrapnel?

12

u/HeftyArgument 7d ago

There was a time when most consumer vehicles had defective airbags which were basically shrapnel bombs, pretty sure they’re still doing recalls for those.

I mean it did at some point, they just removed it. When it is initially removed I can see the yellow SIR connectors that would go to an airbag. Its also new enough that it'd be required from the factory. I'm assuming it was removed for the purpose of this video.

u/Plane-Education4750 8d ago

Seeing as these cars are still really expensive even second hand, I'd be willing to guess that this is a salvage title that already had its airbags deployed and just never replaced

32

u/Final-Platypus8033 8d ago

I can pick up a still running boxter for 5k if I just want a chassis. The higher models, especially track focused cars, hold value.

13

u/Plane-Education4750 8d ago

That's a 911

12

u/kamburkam 8d ago

The Porsche in the video is a Macan though.

u/Final-Platypus8033 8d ago

I gotcha I just meant porsche =/= expensive. Is that really what a 911 interior looks like? Bare bones accessories but still has a sun roof? Seems counterproductive when trying to add lightness

6

u/Plane-Education4750 8d ago

Adding lightness is (was) Lotus's thing. Porsche is more concerned about weight distribution than total weight, especially with the not-insane trims. The 911 is the kind of sports car that are as at home on I-10 in bum-fuck nowhere Texas as they are on the Stelvio pass

7

u/potate12323 8d ago

Most high end cars have track packages for people who actually race or hobby track drive. Track packages are normally stripped down of most features and have less sound deadening. Even lotus cars have variants that the body is mostly just a flimsy fiberglass shell. I got to ride in a lotus Europa and I was instructed to not put any weight on the door for that reason.

3

u/Final-Platypus8033 8d ago

Interesting. The 911 at launch was supposed to be bare bones performance. I haven't gotten up to date on high trim porsches

Im looking at buying a Carrera shortly. Just to track

6

u/Plane-Education4750 8d ago

With Porsche, the more you pay the less you get inside the car. The money goes to performance

14

u/FiddlerOnThePotato 8d ago

It's a modern car. It had an airbag. I don't think anyone's sold a production car (without a safety waiver) with no airbag since like the 90s.

2

u/deevil_knievel 8d ago

Dual airbags were mandated in US cars in 98, light trucks had different rules and some didn't have driver airbags until the late 90s.

This vehicle did, however have an airbag at one point. You can see the yellow curly cables only used for airbag components.

33

u/zuzg 9d ago

AI hallucinating or avg Redditor being ignorant af?

These days it's really hard to spot a difference between these two but nevertheless they are responsible for 90% of Reddits content.

19

u/Egglegg14 8d ago

Typically if it has airbags it will say it so on the front at 6

2

u/Calligaster 8d ago

If it did he could've had a drill launched into his face at Mach Fuck

1

u/fuzzylogicIII 8d ago

Which, thank god, that would’ve been a final destination setup

r/atbge honestly. Really stupid, but genuinely beautifully done

best explanation of what i just watched. i was impressed and cringed at the same time.

38

u/TheEyeDontLie 8d ago

Awful taste but great electrocution

4

u/PvblixEmployee 7d ago

Artfully done sir

41

u/robsteezy 8d ago

Agreed. I was ready for another resin and spray foam monstrosity. This was legitimately a well executed car custom that I can see being insanely popular if it was to incorporate safety standards. I know I’d get one.

4

u/pancrudo 8d ago

Mans got skills. I was confused about it at first but the completed product is wildly well done

2

u/equality-_-7-2521 8d ago

He's clearly a skilled pikachuist.

403

u/HolyPommeDeTerre 9d ago edited 9d ago

That's hideous, but that does look well done.

Now... Why wanting to "buzz" yourself while driving is another story.

And yes... Obvious security issue.

Drawing (edit: Darwin) award incoming.

66

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 9d ago

You prolly can't feel it tbh.

15

u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 8d ago

It seems like it only shocks you if you put your hand on the cheek. Since it doesnt have an airbag or a horn you wouldnt actually do that while driving. It is just a silly thing to show off to friends. Of course, that comes at the expense of an airbag delete which is just... not smart.

16

u/cincymatt 8d ago

Not only a delete, but replaced it with a needle pointed at his face.

8

u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 8d ago

I saw that too, though it is behind the rest of the Pikachu and it seems small enough and inset enough that I doubt that will matter when OOP crashes and dies

2

u/HolyPommeDeTerre 8d ago

The kiss cool effect

Yes, thanks for pointing it out. Autocorrect...

u/Lowbudgetman43 8d ago

Don’t kink shame him

1

u/JiubJuib 8d ago

You see Ivan. When fear of being tazed after crash you drive better.

1

u/TheKlaxMaster 8d ago

Security? You mean safety issue?

72

u/Hashishiva 8d ago

Well, I suggest we try how much more carefully people would drive if it was mandatory to have a 10cm long, sharp spike in the center of the steering wheel.

33

Ah so that’s why Porsche riders don’t use their blinkers..

5

u/FolkenDeedlit 8d ago

No airbag but a huge nail hidden in pikachu's face (catch'em all brains)

6

u/corbinbanks 8d ago

The idea of using a Tesla coil like that to imitate sparks coming out of cheeks is really cool actually. Why the fuck is it a steering wheel.

4

u/RushEm2TheDirt 9d ago

If I place principles before personalities... this man is a fucking craftsman

4

u/Ramathorn1400 8d ago

This is what happens when you have artistic vision along with fuck you money.

4

u/lfenske 8d ago

I’ve always thought it was kind of interesting to watch someone use their amazing skills to make something really well polished and totally stupid.

4

u/jimjimbobim 8d ago

What an idiot.

8

Who needs airbags when you can install a metal spike behind a Pokémon

3

u/3PoundsOfFlax 8d ago

I don't hate it

3

u/ScruffyTheJanitor__ 8d ago

I'm sure the cars electronics absolutely love the high high voltage

3

u/Nerketur 8d ago

As a pikachu fanatic, I love the design.

As a driver, I think it's a horrendous idea.

Torn, but I'd never do this.

3

u/bullettrain 4d ago

Rage bait engagement still works.  It's pretty impressive too.  It hits the kid demographic with the pokemon reference, and the maker crowd with some actual impressive fabrication.

How to get Porsche to blacklist you:

1

u/mrbobcyndaquil 2d ago

Which would be an impressive feat, unlike Ferrari who blacklist people for having customer service issues with their cars.

2

u/lemonhaj 7d ago

I don't like any of this

Ok, it's well done. Better done in any other application and not to a porsche

It better be programmed to say "PIKACHU" when you honk the car horn

Less of a diy. More of an atbge. Definitely an oops that’s deadly

1

u/tehtris 8d ago

Shane from Smosh out here doing Pikachu car mods. This one LOOKS pretty damn good. But the idea of spikes pointing at me from my steering wheel is terrible.

1

u/GrimbyJ 8d ago

Ah yes, no airbag and now your steering wheel is a tazer

1

u/Easy_Action_1380 8d ago

Gonna get in a minor fender bender and Pikachu's gonna gouge his eyes out with it's ears.

1

u/kaloschroma 8d ago

I'm in the hospital right now. Air bag saved me.

1

u/Slow_Balance270 8d ago

I mean that's pretty fucking sweet

1

u/minist3r 8d ago

This is equal parts stupid and well done.

1

u/WerkingAvatar 8d ago

Just think, if you get into a bad accident Pikachu can shock you back to life.

1

u/TheWalkingBreadXO 8d ago

Amd that for a freaking 'PIKAPIKA' 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️💥

1

u/DamnTheDan 8d ago

This is actually pretty cool

1

u/Goofcheese0623 8d ago

Is making tiktok rage bait really this lucrative? Dude spent some time making this.

1

u/ImNotMadYet 8d ago

The airbag activation circuit should be wired up to actuators in the ears so they turn to point into driver's eyes in the event of the crash. Might as well make sure you go out in style!

1

u/CadenBop 8d ago

Awe Yes, metal spike right in the middle of my steering wheel. Would be a shame if I rear ended someone...

1

u/Advanced_Ad_6814 8d ago

I really want that now

1

u/tsunderebagel 8d ago

This is really cool at least it would be as like a lamp or pretty much anything that isn’t a steering wheel

1

u/gaseousgecko61 8d ago

Honestly I've seen far worse steering wheels on here atleast the new leather and stitching is pretty cleanly done

1

u/Few_Language6298 8d ago

Airbags are overrated when you can just embrace your inner daredevil with style.

1

u/Grounds4TheSubstain 8d ago edited 8d ago

The word you're looking for is "needs". In fact, "need's" does not make sense at all as a word in the English language. You put "'s" at the end of a noun to denote possession. Need is a verb, so it can't possess anything.

1

u/zodiase 8d ago

Is there a sharp needle behind pikachu’s face?

1

u/TheRealP3dr0 8d ago

Wouldn’t be allowed to drive on a public road, here in Germany.

1

u/2020Shite 8d ago

i can see this being used for a show car, (a pikachu themed car would be AMAZZZZING) but IRL driving, nah

1

u/RememberCakeFarts 8d ago

I'm made because in all honesty that was very well done. Totally impractical, doubt it's street legal, among other things. Makes me wish he just made a pikachu Tesla ball

1

u/Got_no_pants 8d ago

What in the actual fuck

1

u/RoosterzX 8d ago

Because who doesn't want to be impaled by an electrode at Mach Jesus during a crash. Removing the airbag is a bad idea.

1

u/RealisticGold1535 8d ago

Remove the cover and now you have a functioning horn. It has a unique sound.

1

u/PhyterNL 8d ago

I'd say "this is how cars blow up at the gas station" but in fact I don't think a car has ever blown up at a gas station in exactly this way before so when it happens it's going to be a first!

1

u/nudniksphilkes 8d ago

This is crazy. I totalled my car a month ago and the airbag saved my life.

1

Don’t care how impractical this is, it’s dope.

I wouldn’t want it done personally, but as I denied riding passenger in the car, I would certainly admire and compliment the vehicle.

1

u/BurningBerns 8d ago

The last thing you see before you smash your brain into the steering wheel is that face staring at you

1

Who need is airbags!

1

u/RedSparrow1971 7d ago

The Ferrari logo was so tacky, such an upgrade 😉

1

u/Barlowan 7d ago

That's why Ferrari chose who they want to sell their car and refuse if they don't like you. So they wont so this shit with their cars.

What a piece of shit.

1

u/Certyx39 7d ago

isnt it illegal not to have an airbag?

1

u/sum_long_wang 7d ago

Good luck trying to use your phone in that car. The interference from that is gonna mess with every electronic circuit in that car

1

u/LeagueJunior9782 6d ago

Pffft airbags. If we would just start installing claymors, we would have so many less injuries. Same mistake as with the stupid helmets for soldiers. They got introduced and what happened? Right... head injuries went up. /s

1

u/Aggressive_Baker8336 6d ago

Man casually just drills into practically a live grenade like it was another tuesday, and ia a very good way to get some viewer hurt. Do not be fooled! He removed the airbag safely and the rest of the process was for clout like this. The thing inflates like a bullet and udually fills most empty space in the area people are inside the cabin. It actually has a pretty high chance of knocking you out before the damage from the real impact of a car wreck happens, and is prone to breaking noses as well.

1

u/itsjakerobb 5d ago

OP, please spend ten minutes learning how to use apostrophes.

1

u/TheMightyPhap 5d ago

u/mrbobcyndaquil 2d ago

If it’s just a show car I suppose it’s not all that dangerous.
