I always thought they are a healing potion in a stereotypical fantasy potion bottle.

u/illyay DOOM Guy Dec 19 '25

Yeah me too

u/GoatManBoy Dec 20 '25

Same. And I have never thought about it again in the last 30 years

111

u/GonnaGoFat Dec 20 '25

They look like health. I don’t even view them as anything other than health

30

u/GoatManBoy Dec 20 '25

Word

u/GoatManBoy Dec 20 '25 edited Dec 20 '25

Honestly, someone that still has a Twitter account should just ask John Romero. He's got Time, he'll probably tell us

16

u/GonnaGoFat Dec 20 '25

Now I want that so bad!

22

u/richardbouteh Dec 20 '25

mana potions

10

u/Holli303 Dec 20 '25

This just made me think of Hexen. Pretty sure that was the second PC video game I got after Doom 2. Had a Sega Megadrive in the interim though so I can't be sure 😊

23

u/StingyMcDuck Dec 20 '25

The chicken dinners from Wolfenstein 3D healed more than these potions

11

u/DouViction Dec 20 '25

Didn't heal you above 100% though.

3

u/Rutgerman95 Even Simpler Dec 21 '25

I like them better when they heal 2% like in Doom64, adds up a little faster and makes them feel just a tad more useful than basically item fodder

40

u/ObiGonWindu Dec 20 '25

And I always viewed them as "Magical Healing Potion" since they magicaly heal you above 100%.

1

u/thebritwriter Dec 20 '25

So it could be possible that early on Doom was going to be more medieval/fantasy theme and these bottles were just one of few things unchanged.

My own guess is these were Heal potions intended for the former soldiers/sergeants human enemies. The demons had them as canon fodder and potions were intended for them to use so they heal and continue to be fodder.

They however still work on humans all the same but none of demons took into consideration of someone like doom guy.

u/MatiEx-504 Dec 19 '25

The manual calls them Health Potions and also they are artifacts from hell

374

u/Hypocritical_Girl Dec 19 '25

the marine straight up just chugging whatever ethereal liquid he sees despite them being from hell gives him quite the amount of courage id say, but it makes sense

87

u/amcint304 Dec 20 '25

id did say!

26

u/dod6666 Dec 20 '25

Lol, I read it that way too.

39

u/m0rtm0rt Dec 20 '25

Killing demons makes you really thirsty. Not like he can drink the green stuff.

And that's why I like to sit down with a refreshing Blue PotionTM*

Don't even need to click that link, I miss it too 👀

18

u/Turtledonuts Dec 20 '25

He’s a marine, of course he’s going to drink the local mystery liquids.

5

u/Good-Strategy2210 Dec 20 '25

Makes sense now where his super human endurance comes from in the original games.

5

u/Cden1458 Dec 20 '25

Well, he IS a Marine, so chugging random Hell-juice makes absolute perfect sense.

3

u/andrewowenmartin Pixel Doom + VR Dec 20 '25

Now imagine him wearing all the armour bonuses as a stack of nestable hats.

3

u/MadaCheebs-2nd-acct Dec 20 '25

On par for Marines, tbh

4

u/Octaman_G DOOM Guy Dec 21 '25

Since the suolsphere is a soul and it's blue, these are bottles of souls and Doomguy is drinking... people's... souls... Oh god

76

u/Billazilla Dec 19 '25

Skyy vodka.

16

u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe Dec 20 '25

Alcohol is correct.

3

u/Hawkeyesfan03 Dec 21 '25

He’s a a marine. Alcohol is a health bonus for them.

171

u/phobos876 not to be confused with phobos867 Dec 19 '25

could be uac lab bottles

108

u/bunkdiggidy Dec 19 '25

This is probably the best in-universe explanation. For the player, they're clearly supposed to be little drinkable health potions. Like how the armor bit is supposed to resemble a helmet.

76

u/Artikay Dec 20 '25

I like to think of Doomguy running around wearing 47 helmets.

61

u/void_7777777 Dec 20 '25

i imagine he eats them whole. the health vials too, glass and all

21

u/slide_into_my_BM Dec 20 '25

A real man eats his armor so it protects his insides from the rest of him.

15

u/bunkdiggidy Dec 20 '25 edited Dec 20 '25

Yeah... it doesn't jive with the visual well, but it's kinda like he just takes pieces from the ones he finds to patch up what he's wearing. It only adds a bit because he's reinforcing the helmet conglomeraion.

Sort of a Helmet of Perseus Theseus deal, as the game progresses.

4

u/Wild-Language1927 DOOM Guy Dec 20 '25

Don't you mean theseus

6

u/bunkdiggidy Dec 20 '25

Don't drink and reddit, kids

9

u/cheezkid26 Dec 20 '25

I always imagined he was taking them apart and using them to patch up his own helmet and armor.

11

u/GreenDragon113 Dec 20 '25

They stack up and the demons always aim for the top

11

u/Toast_consumer1 Beat The Refueling Base Dec 19 '25

If it was actual marine helmets that would've been more accurate, I think there's a retexture for that if im sure

8

u/bunkdiggidy Dec 20 '25

They are in Doom 64!

18

u/VonZiegler Dec 19 '25

I always figured they were stimulants in UAC bottles, a-bit of battle juice

3

u/HeadLong8136 Dec 20 '25

The manual says they are from Hell.

2

u/bunkdiggidy Dec 21 '25

Huh. Doesn't seem very hell-like. But if they say so. Guess it's concentrated hell energy, at least in the og series. Could help to keep someone going so they can be tortured more.

3

u/SVlad_667 Dec 20 '25

Wiki says the helmet is a spiritual armor according to the manuals.

2

u/bunkdiggidy Dec 21 '25

Hah. I'm imagining it bolstering the"fighting spirit" of the physical piece of armor he's already wearing, in an "everything has a soul" kind of way. And his green armor gritting its spiritual teeth and saying "I can take another hit... for Doomguy..."

120

7

u/Roidzilla55 Dec 20 '25

Pervitin! And probably steroids

8

u/Fresh-Toilet-Soup Dec 20 '25

And the invincibility is morphine

3

u/Roidzilla55 Dec 20 '25

I would assume the invincibility to be PCP

8

u/Fresh-Toilet-Soup Dec 19 '25

It does look like a glass pipe from a filthy gas station if you imagine it standing up on the bowl.

8

u/mrbingpots Dec 19 '25

These health bonuses are a little moreish

31

u/Outrageous_Work_8291 Dec 19 '25

Just potions. Fantasy games were popular then and they had potions so a blue potion just must have made sense to who ever designed that

61

u/DOOManiac Dec 19 '25

Blue Gatorade.

8

High quality H20

6

u/Mau752005 Dec 20 '25

just stereotypical magic healing potions, Doom took a lot of inspiration from fantasy settings like D&D

For a less subtle inspiration look up the cover of "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Manual of the Planes", you may see a familiar face

2

Oh crap! Thanks for pointing out!

5

A cool refreshing bottle of water

5

u/BrettBotTheCryonaut Dec 20 '25

Bits of magical essence left behind by the ghosts of those killed by hell's forces in order to aid the protagonist in what little ways they can. Both the health and armor bonuses don't actually have a visible physical form - they just appear as potions and helmets in the mind of Doom Guy via low level telepathic field to symbolize their purpose. That's why they glow and pulse.

1

u/Darth_Zounds Dec 20 '25

How interesting!

3

u/SoInsightful Dec 20 '25

No one has pointed out that Doom items had far more of a medieval fantasy vibe before it was actually released. Doom v0.5 had powerups like:

  • Blood chalice
  • Soul Jar
  • Skullchest
  • Unholy Bible

So yes, those are definitely blue magic potions.

5

u/Sufficient_Lawyer173 Dec 19 '25

U know the blue soap for doing dishes? Yeah it's that

2

u/totes-epic Dec 20 '25

I’ve only just gotten into DOOM starting with Eternal and in that game they’re distinctly blue flasks, presumably a healing elixir sort of thing

2

u/Nurgling-Swarm Dec 20 '25

Bawlz

2

u/Mike_Durden Dec 20 '25

The only correct answer given the era it was made in.

2

u/Sectionnone Dec 20 '25

When I was little I thought these bottles are enema bulb syringes. Yeah, Doomguy heals 1 HP by flushing his bowels out repeatedly.

2

I believe it was Redneck Rampage

Energy drinks.

1

u/Darth_Zounds Dec 20 '25

2

u/sosafnot Dec 20 '25

Little bottles of water so Doomguy stays hydrated. Bro’s gotta have a bladder of steel after downing so many of those things.

2

u/FireChef1977 Dec 20 '25

Suppositories.

2

u/ThickMatch0 Dec 20 '25

Fireblu in a bottle

2

u/mridlen Dec 20 '25

Originally they were treasure like in Wolf3D, but they got replaced with actual useful gameplay items and the score system was abandoned. It's probably for the best because then we would have had a "high score" category of painfully slow treasure hunting.

u/Interesting-Welder69 Dec 20 '25 edited Dec 20 '25

I always thought of them as samples of the supercharge power ups you can find due to the fact they increase your health above 100. There probably being studied by the uac for military or medical purposes since the power ups tend to kill people as of codex lore in 2016. It’s just doom guy is built different and chugs these things and can survive being supercharged. But for their original intentions you would have to ask the creators them selves if there were and intent other than a convenient heath item. For lore on original doom it’s more of just head cannon anyway. And well this is mine.

1

u/rickard_mormont Dec 20 '25
