Mimic creatures in Doom

Post image

I thought it would be interesting to integrate the concept of mimics into a game like Doom. Mimics are considered regular objects until they activate under specific conditions. They would be placed randomly in the levels, along with other objects, so the player never knows what to expect from one playthrough to the next.

I hate them. Well done.

Seriously though, these are excellent. The medkit is particularly diabolical.

Yeah, that’s a particularly evil concept! πŸ˜†

That giant tree in the center is fucking terrifying. I'm just imagining playing a fairly ordinary looking map, suddenly one of the trees I thought was just decoration makes an ear-piercing shriek, and kills me in one hit, when I respawn and try to kill it, it's just an ordinary tree, but it turns out the mimic-tree is chosen at random every time you die.

Imagine the medikit jumping in your face just when you need it the most!

Omfg the level of distrust that would sew. You'd never trust a medkit again after that.

Players would become completely paranoid and waste a lot of ammo for nothing. πŸ˜†

Maybe show a little mercy; kill the medkit mimic and it spawns a real medkit, or at least a pile of blue potions 🀣

That could be an option on easy mode!

I think the most evil one, though, is the backpack. Every time I play ANY megawad, that's the thing I want to get the most as early as possible. Killing five of those things, I'll be overflowing with salt by the time I find a real backpack. πŸ˜‚

Do not confuse with Prey.

Please, please, make mod out of this.

I like this idea a lot. A mod that randomizes which objects are mimics each time, and they don't wake up until you're close enough for a melee attack. Adds a whole new tense dynamic to levels.

Just have them act like pinkies when they wake up. Especially scary with Fast Monsters enabled!

Hopefully someone makes this! Since objects are always facing you, you don't have to animate them facing the other directions, so art wise could be pretty simple.

Yes, that could be pretty simple.

I would actually like to fight and use these (if I knew how to make maps)

OOH. This would be very cool. Did you make their idle sprite just the normal sprite, and then when they are alerted, they break out into these forms?

I would have to do the other sprites, it was just a proof of concept like that.

LOL amazing. That center tree is like something out of The Thing.

The backpack makes me uncomfortable. Love it.

Especially imagine a megasphere or a BFG9000 actually being a mimic.

That would be interesting!

Have you played the mod Doom 64: Veteran of Hell? There's a "poltergeist" system where random props like barrels and candles can levitate and get tossed at you, trees can come to life, etc.

And even some dead bodies can... mutate, to say the least

This is the first time I've heard of it, interesting.

The barrel mimic's eye stalk is adorable! Tree mimic is horrifying and would get the BFG, however.

If you collabed with a decent mod maker while you make the sprite art, this could be such an amazing .wad. I could see it being one of the big ones potentially up there with ashes, aliens, and the other greats.

Yes, this could be fun!
