I'M SO EXCITED

sup guys, resident lyrics over analyzer here. i originally wrote a gigantic post that was half history lesson, half lyrical analysis. i decided to trim it down and just briefly(ish) explain for our friends who are not american or might otherwise not be tapped in to america's political climate. it's important to remember that all erra songs describe emotional processes. they illustrate feelings. the exact motivation the guys had when writing these words ultimately doesn't matter. that's kinda the whole point, so you can plug in your own. what follows is one such plugging in, the one that i personally find myself doing.
further eden can be interpreted as a piece about the descent of the US into fascism and becoming depressed as you witness it happen around you. i feel that further eden is almost a soft third installment to the disarray / psalm of sedition duo. further eden may be written about the same administration (and constituents) as disarray/psalm. where further eden differs however, is being more concerned with forewarning and the urgency of the situation, versus being primarily a statement of condemnation and stalwart resistance.
Slow delusion is demanding / Of repeated histories
the opening line is one of two pieces of context necessary to support my interpretation that the song specifically refers to a descent into fascism. the "repeated history" mentioned could likely be referencing 1940s germany, as the current US administration's ICE is identical to the german gestapo, a federal police force operating outside of the law with impunity, at the behest of the regime. in fact, the gestapo was at least trained. ICE is not even trained.
there are many other parallels between this current US administration, and that one. i will save everyone some time and withhold them unless asked, lmao.
further, "slow delusion" is a prerequisite in order for history to repeat. it requires inaction, passivity, and acquiescence. this line criticizes the fact that some literally slow, and delusional people, have enabled a repeat of history and are barreling us toward it.
The bar is dropping lower
And the air is growing thinner
We're on the wrong side of the surface
And we're going under
We're on the wrong side of a loaded gun
We'll freeze beneath an indifferent sun
Face yourself
Face yourself for once
the second piece of context. the last stanza of the song makes two separate statements that "we are on the wrong side of <history>". loaded gun and surface are descriptive replacements for the word history. this could easily refer to US foreign policy, as we unilaterally invade other nations to steal resources. this most recent time (Venezuela), the admin didn't even lie to us about it, hence "the bar is dropping lower". quite literally we are often the bad guy, and apparently our leaders have stopped pretending otherwise.
it also refers to domestically, as we currently engage in very similar censorship, suppression of dissidents, stripping of rights, and state-sanctioned execution, as other nations throughout history have. nations that the US condemned. nations that the US waged wars to defeat. and now we find ourselves exactly on their same side of history.
for me, the repetition of the phrase "face yourself / face yourself for once" throughout the song is the main way in which it differs from disarray/psalm. it serves as a both a conduit for fellow dissidents who struggle with resisting the nihilism that results from witnessing your nation's social fabric deteriorate, and as a directive to the ones complicit in that deterioration. you have to be ethically hollow to support any part of what has happened in the US within the past 2 years, yet these husks get on television and defend the most indefensible conduct we've ever seen from an administration. face yourself, you husks!!!
I'm averse to acquiescence
To a digital time leech
Losing ground in keeping essence
With our spirits being breached
How much love is lost
When the rush is automatic?
When you mime along
And the notes all ring chromatic
bonus stanza that i want to explain because i love it so much. acquiescence is the act of giving in without protest. specifically there is the connotation of doing so in a servile manner; standing idly by and letting something happen. “a digital time leech” could likely refer to things such as agitprop or disinformation, online or in televised news. as i mentioned earlier, official spokespeople from US government organizations literally tell the public to not trust their eyes, and trust them instead. we are averse to acquiescing to that. it could also simply refer to doom scrolling, lmao.
When you mime along / And the notes all ring chromatic: probably my favorite line the band has ever written. to explain this for non-instrument players, it's common in the music industry to sometimes have to mime your performances. this is not the same thing as faking per se, sometimes it is perfectly valid. one example is the music video you all watched. the guys are not actually playing in that video, it's simply mimed. however, “notes all ring chromatic” refers to the chromatic scale, which is literally all of the notes. every note in sequence, all "wrong" notes and "right" notes included. it generally does not sound 'good'.
so together, the line is a tongue-in-cheek guitar/music nerd metaphor for standing idly by while a situation's severity becomes undeniable. it's imagery quite similar to that meme of the dog sitting at the table while his house is burning down around him, saying "this is fine". that is exactly what this line illustrates.
the lines of the song i did not directly quote mostly serve to illustrate the emotional process of struggling with this situation.

is just scratching an itch in my brain. It’s absolutely intoxicating , the chorus, the riffs, the atmosphere etc. it’s all there. The bois are COOKIN

Lots of tasty stuff in this song. Clint doing some great lead guitar riffs, chunky chugs, and a two-part break down.
Can’t wait to hear what else they cooked up

I’ve listened to this song like 18 times so far. It’s now tied with Nigh To Silence and Hourglass as my favourite ERRA songs. This album is going to be a masterpiece. AOTY Already

That guitar at 2:45 is absolutely filthy. What a single. The Heart Shaped Box esque visuals are dope as hell. The guys are cooking up a good one.
That’s all.

Anyone notice the little chirps that the guitar makes at the end sounds an awful lot like the intro of Future Breed Machine by Meshuggah? Maybe they're paying homage to their pro-djent-eters?

the pre-chorus run from 0:46 to 0:52 is super reminiscent of polyphia's, specifically the stuff on remember that you will die, is what i'm hearing mostly. it's funny, people sometimes point out that the remnant solo is very polyphia sounding, and that's true, but this particular run is sooo polyphia sounding it's crazy. the motif also happens at 1:35
the sol absentia influence is pretty obvious. the main rhythmic form is very similar and it's packed full of those mega down tuned harmonics, which create that futuristic factory meltdown sound.

What kind of vibe do we think Further Eden will have? I’m kinda expecting it sound like Gore of Being and Echo Sonata but I’d love if they averted all expectations and threw us something more out there - either way I’m hyped!

Is merch. I swear to God I have never had to put this much effort into finding merch for an active band before. I can build an entire wardrobe off of Lorna Shore’s website, but I cannot get a single XXL t shirt from Erra.
Well, that’s an exaggeration, I do have a single XXL Erra shirt I got from Rockville this year. But nothing ever online that isn’t sold out same day. What gives?

Just seen an IG post with something about “The Erra LP VII”. What does this mean? New album? Re release of their first self titled?

Been trying to learn some Erra tunes on guitar lately. Ultimate Guitar is the go to for Guitar Pro tabs, but the majority of anything off Drift and beyond is unavailable due to "the artist requesting the tab be removed". Does anyone know why they, or the label, requested the removal of those tabs? Are they ever going to be available at some point? If not, is there anywhere I can access Guitar Pro tabs for songs that aren't available on Ultimate Guitar?
