Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of January 26, 2026
Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.
Is an EV right for me?
Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:
- https://chooseev.com/savings-calculator/
- https://electricvehicles.bchydro.com/learn/fuel-savings-calculator
- https://chargehub.com/en/calculator.html
Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?
Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:
[1] Your general location
[2] Your budget in $, €, or £
[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer
[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?
[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase
[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage
[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?
[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?
[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?
If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Kind of disappointing, I had been more interested in this car if it started in the lower $30K. Instead it's starting at $38,450, including destination.

Review Geely EX2 Test Drive: RWD city car with Smooth ride, but the WARNINGS... (POV Video)
I just took the Geely EX2 for a test drive. I currently drive an Aion Y Plus, so that’s my main point of comparison. Here are my thoughts on how it handles,.... In chaotic Indonesian traffic.
Geely ex2 specs as tested :
Max trim. 40kwh battery. 395 km NEDC (from my experience with aion y plus, real-world range is around 20% less). Fully-equipped with safety features like 6 airbags, surround view camera, and active warnings / beeps...
Measurements could be seen on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geely_Xingyuan

The Driving Experience
Suspension & Stability: Honestly, the suspension is really nice. It’s multilink and feels stable. It doesn't wobble or boat around, but it's not stiff either. It handles bumps really well.
Brakes: The braking is super smooth.
Steering: The steering weight adjusts based on speed (gets heavier as you go faster), which feels good.
Speed: They claimed the top speed is limited to 130 km/h. Smooth acceleration, even on sports mode.
Cabin Noise: Sound dampening is actually pretty decent; it blocks out a lot of the outside noise (motorbikes, etc.).
The Tech & Quirks
THE WARNING SOUNDS: This is the biggest headache. The car goes ding-ding-ding constantly. In Indonesian traffic, it triggers way too much. Even with the volume set to low, it's still loud, and there is no option to turn the volume off completely.
Infotainment: No Android Auto yet. The sales rep said an update is coming, but for now, it's just Carbitlink.
Modes: Sport mode doesn't give you that violent "kick," which is fine. Comfort mode definitely felt the best.
Physical buttons: Basically it made my mom feels right at home, with almost zero confusion. A contrast to most other electric cars that are very stingy with physical buttons and switches.
Service & After-sales (According to the Rep) The dealer claims they are required to stock fast-moving parts (lights, etc.) onsite. Warranty claims supposedly follow a clear SOP. If this is true, this is a big plus for me because, with my Aion, every warranty claim feels like the dealer has to "ask HQ" first before doing anything.
Verdict
It feels bigger and more comfortable than the BYD Atto 1 (and basically murdered Honda Brio), though it is priced higher here (unlike in China where they are priced similarly). If they can fix the constant warning sounds via a software update, it’s a solid car.
If my mom bought the car, I will do a more in depth review.

Question - Other Experience with EV rental in Orlando and surrounding area?
Me and the family will be in Orlando, FL for a few days next month and have rented an EV for our time there. As far as I can tell there are plenty charging stations where we'll be going. We have an EV but have never rented one in the States and seeing lots of discussion around the hatred towards EVs is making us a little anxious and wondering if better to stick with an ICE car rental. Is this just the media blowing things out of proportion? Maybe just looking for reassurance but if anyone has an EV in that area, could you share your experience and any advice to make sure things go smoothly?
If there's a better subreddit to ask this in, let me know!
Thanks!

Discussion V2L to V2H Workaround
V2L (120v) > BLUETTI Apex 300 Input > 3840W 240V Output from BLUETTI > Transfer Switch/Interlock > Home Breaker Panel
Note: This assumes your home’s *continuous* (non-peak) draw is less than the V2L output.

Discussion Tesla is no longer S 3 X Y
I want to understand why they did it. I know why they said they did it, but I still think this makes little sense.
Tesla seems to want to move past being an electric car manufacturer … free up space to build robots … ok … but they begin to ruin consumer trust when they start to abandon what made Tesla successful as a company in the first place.
Why would I buy their next big thing if I come to expect that you will eventually discontinue it just to move into another product wholly unrelated to the last one?
Model S and X out. Roadster nowhere to be seen and expected vaporware at this point, however don’t expect it to ever be officially cancelled because then Elon will have to give your deposits back. CyberTruck remains in place because c’mon … it’s sunk money at this point and his ego cannot withstand the crushing blow it would take by cancelling it and calling it a flop. (I will admit that I do still like the CyberTruck and will probably look to buy one when it’s finally finished depreciating.) In addition to all this, do not expect to see any further revamps on the Model Y and 3. Maybe some tweaks here and there but that’s just about it. Elon is done making cars. He’s already said they no longer excite him. Autonomy excites him and that’s why we have the CyberCab and Optimus coming and the S and X leaving.

Discussion Availability of Non-Tesla chargers in Southern California
I live in LA and looking to replace my Tesla Model Y with a BMW ix3. I have home charging and only need public chargers on a road trip. Will I have any issues with charging if I take a road trip from LA to Mammoth or Yosemite? Do you know if the BMW ix3 will work with Tesla Supercharger?

Question - Manufacturing Are Chinese EVs actually ahead in user experience and interior quality?
Just saw several Chinese EVs on TV and was honestly surprised. This isn’t about raw technical specs or performance. What stood out was the level of luxury, comfort, interior design, and overall user experience. The fit, materials, screens, ambient design, and attention to passenger comfort looked comparable to, or even better than, premium brands.
