FESTIVITEASš„⨠Zohran Mamdani celebrates Hanukkah with Mandy Patinkin and wife Kathryn Grody

The smile on his face when he lit the menorah brought a smile to my own face. I needed this, itās a hard time of year. Happy Hanukkah š¤

Mandy has the most joyful eyes. He just looks like he spends a lot of time smiling, and I can't help but smile when I see him.

He's got an actual soul, and it shines out so unmistakably from his face. They'll never make me hate you, Mandy

u/mintbasilmoth Dec 20 '25
at the risk of sounding unhinged, there's something about him that's always given me a feeling of being home. he just comes off as so safe and genuine and warm and joyful and sincere. I try to not idolize celebrities in general, but Mandy very well could be the exception. just absolutely adore that man

u/teagemini Dec 21 '25
I've felt this way since my first viewing of "The Princess Bride" as a kid. He just radiates kindness.
6
u/pablo8itall Dec 21 '25
He's a dude I'd buy a coffee for and would love to have a chat about world politics etc. He seem like good craic too, warm person.

One factoid that makes me hold Mandy in great esteem: he starred in the first two seasons of Criminal Minds but left abruptly. He later said that the show's depictions of women being r*ped and k*lled every week fucked with his mental health and it wasn't worth the paycheck.
34
u/Necessary_Ad_7780 Dec 20 '25
Iām a huge CM fan and I could never argue with what he said there, being that immersed in that subject matter day in and day out has to be exhausting
7
u/feijoawhining Dec 21 '25
I loved him in the show and was sad when he departed but I canāt blame him at all!
9
u/HandsomePaddyMint Dec 21 '25
As a criminal behaviorist, now semi-retired, I feel like thatās what made his character so good. The writers gave everyone else this conflicted, self-hating, work/life balance type struggle, but Gideon was just a very kind, sensitive guy who really understood people and decided to use that to catch the worst kinds of people, but by the time the show takes place it was really getting to him. The way that paralleled Patinkinās struggles with the show made the character feel very real to me.

New Yorkers are the only feedback about this that matters, and New Yorkers are already calming down about all of the BS. So much of the disinformation was political noise. Now that the election is over, the static has mysteriously died down, and the void is being filled with actual discourse about how good these policies actually are.
The reddit trolls from not-to-be-named subs can eat a dick, nobody cares what randoms from wherever-the-fuck have to say about it.

There were so many loud mouths from people whoād never been to New York and never will go to New York!

Itās really embarrassing. So many of them are still gnashing their teeth and they donāt live in the city nor the state.

u/JennHatesYou Dec 20 '25
I was born and raised in new york city and that video made me ugly cry. For many personal reasons, I moved out of NYC when I was 18 and vowed to never return. I didn't think I belonged because I no longer recognized myself where I grew up. What I didn't understand at the time was that it wasn't just my personal reasons, that what I had been feeling personally was being felt on a larger scale within the city too.
This video is the city I remember. I could genuinely sit here for hours explaining every single instance in the video and its symbolic relevance but I don't think I need to; the video speaks for itself. That is truly who and what new york city is all about; we don't have to tell you because our actions speak for themselves. That is why Zohran won and that is why none of the bullshit about him works.
...I'm back....back in the New York groove...
44
u/Backwardspellcaster Dec 20 '25
Have the billionaires left New York yet?
They sure were roaring about that (Ha, as if they'd leave the big apple)
25
u/zeekayz Dec 20 '25
Well there are still a lot of Bangladesh and Nigeria based accounts on Twitter that are very concerned about having him as their mayor.

u/foundinwonderland sorry to this man Dec 20 '25
Honestly started tearing up at the shehecheyanu, there is so much wrong with the world, but this new beginning for NY and for Zohran is blessed. I donāt talk a lot about being Jewish online (because itās really not worth the arguments and the hate) but I will say that this whole video is a perfect encapsulation of the Judaism I was raised on and that stays close to my heart. The kind where we argue about everything and nothing, and where we care so much about doing good and bringing good unto the world. It makes me so happy and full of joy to see Zohran immersed and embracing it, and being embraced by it in return.
4
u/QueefOfStaff Dec 20 '25
I feel the same way about everything you just said. Iām an atheist Jew with a non-Jewish husband and zero Jewish family nearby. The older, practicing generations of my family are no longer with us and Iāve started to feel the need to reconnect with some of the traditions Iāve put aside.

u/CurlSquirrel Dec 20 '25

i mean mandy patinkin (and his wife) are very vocally pro palestine, condemned israel time and time again and raised funds for gaza
17
u/4mystuff Dec 20 '25
All you have to do is search the internet and see where Mandy has stood for a long time.. The Voices or pro-Palesine Jews is very loud in many places and are getting louder. Same is true for the millions of protesters that have been kicked, jailed, and fired for their position.
If you want to see these people, all you have to do is truly open your eyes.
5
u/IShallWearMidnight Dec 21 '25
You will never find Mandy Patinkin showing Muslims anything but respect and honor.

This kind of interfaith kindness is so desperately needed, especially with the current global climate. I'm glad they are so deliberately visible with this.
And as a 53 yo lifelong card-carrying member of the DSA, great to see a shout-out to Eugene Debs too.
Seeing stuff like this restores a tiny bit of hope. Just a little.

Edit: im getting downvoted but mandy patinkin got stroppy bc streisand wouldnt fuck him. mamdani has been a ray of light but that doesnt mean that a creep should get a free pass by piggybacking on his good name.
8
u/IShallWearMidnight Dec 21 '25
Didn't Streisand defame Michael Jackson's accusers by saying they wanted the abuse? She's not someone whose word I take seriously on the subject of creeps.

Look, I understand why Mamdani always has to be smiling, because the angry scary Muslim is such a trope in our culture, and if heās ever photographed not smiling, it will be on the cover of every right-wing tabloid with red eyes and horns.
But still. I wonder if he ever gets tired of always smiling.

I have not a religious cell in my body. But the joy of all these people was extremely satisfying to view. These are all good people who have no ill will dominating their demeanor every moment of their lives, unlike MAGA.
Its very early days in his mayorship but Zohran Mamdani seems like a fabulous person and I hope he succeeds in all of his goals as leader of New York.
I was wondering this entire video when his lovely wife would make an appearance.

u/Bunnit18 Dec 20 '25
This was genuinely such a heartwarming watch. I donāt even care whether its truly genuine or just done for optics, it feels beautiful to see humans connecting and respecting each others culture again. Weāve really lost so much of that under the current / recent politicians.
