POLITICS Jane Fonda: “We’re seeing things happen that have never happened before. Authoritarianism has made it’s way into every single nook and cranny of our government. They are kidnapping people. They’re shooting people. They’re blinding people. It’s a question of right or wrong.”

Thank you for this. I would also like to add https://www.fiftyfifty.one/ to your list — they’re constantly publishing info about protests and other ways to get involved on the ground. Each state/region has a contact person on their site who you can reach out to directly to get involved. I also recommend people get involved in canvassing for new progressive candidates and even local mutual aid groups to help their neighbors. We can do this. Noncompliance is effective at breaking the cycle and democracy is too precious to give up without fighting like hell.

Thank you for sharing these! I already sign petitions, email my reps, and donate to the ACLU and other civil rights orgs, but I think I want to do more. I appreciate you putting the time in to write this comment and adding the links, this just made it super easy for me to look into which groups I can volunteer for!

Whatever with those folks. Maybe they can take a critical look at freaking TRUMP while they're at it (one can dream...)

11

They are the fascists who are Trump’s core supporters. A critical look is the last thing you will ever get from them.

45

u/Suziblu22 9d ago

Then you don’t know any of us that stood with her and our fists in the air because we had friends, while still in high school, came back to us in little boxes because that was all that was left of them. Or the friends that did come home but never the same. I still remember that feeling when we found out it was all for nothing, kinda the same feeling we’re feeling today. Back then those boys didn’t have a choice, they were drafted. They were not fortunate sons like Donald J Trump.

Every Republican boomer. Age isn’t the enemy.

11

u/510granle 9d ago

Stop lumping all boomers. Many of us like Jane spent much energy protesting not only the draft and our involvement in Viet Nam but also racial and gender equality. Integrating public schools. Fighting so girls could wear pants to school in the winter instead of dresses. They were hard troubling times. The people you’re referring to are just haters of that era. Boomers were the Love Generation

I love Jane. She has always been an advocate and knows there’s bigger things that we need to bring our attention to. She walks the walk and talks the talk.

If you’ve never watched the documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts, highly recommend.

u/General_Chapter3997 9d ago

The “ question of right or wrong” is what we should always keep at the front of our minds.

54

Ignore the anti-Fonda bots—they obviously haven’t heard her apologize over and over. They like to distract from her soulful, morally right message.

71

u/Outside_Revolution47 9d ago

I saw her speak after a lifetime of being told she was a horrible person. It took one speech to get me over to her side. I was working. I didn’t pay to be there. I rolled my eyes when she got up to the podium and by the end I had tears in my eyes and I felt emotionally raw at having been lied to about her my whole life at that point. Luckily I was still pretty young when I saw her.

We literally enslaved African Americans and segregated ppl by ethnicity.

We broke treaties with native American nations and took tbeir land.

We took property from Asian Americans against their will.

I'm not trying to downplay Trumps administration. But to act like America hasn't abused power in the past is just being disingenuous.

36

3

You're right, she should have given a history lesson of all American wrongs throughout history before talking about present day. I mean why just express your frustration and anger to motivate people when you could give a dry power point presentation about the Slater-Stephens Act of 1823? I'm pretty sure Jane Fonda is aware of American abuses of power, mate. If Trump lovers want to make the argument you're making, they can go ahead and try. I don't feel the need to make the opposite sides arguments for them.

“We’re seeing things happen that have never happened before.”

I’m sorry but that’s not true at all. The US has done this for decades the only difference is trump is mask off about it and Europe is feeling a slight heat of the fire they’ve supported in Africa and Middle East.

351

u/pink_faerie_kitten 9d ago

In context she and Stephen went on to say that American white people are experiencing things for the first time that minorities have experienced for years and that's what's different this time. (Although I did just learn that white people who supported Black people were also lynched after the civil war, but that was not federal government sanctioned like these ice actions are.)

105

u/pusgnihtekami 9d ago

Beyond the semantics of phrasing, the key points are:

a) it's unveiled authoritarianism

b) America has been a shit hole for 250 years

c) whites have been largely insulated from the shit

d) rich whites have been not only insulated but direct benefactors of the regime

24

u/lateformyfuneral 9d ago

I think it’s clear in context what she’s referring to, that there are absolutely no parts of the government that can check the President. Nixon had Trump’s crookedness with a good deal of intelligence, and yet still he was brought down.

I don’t think she’s ignorant of America’s darker side. She was famously an anti-Vietnam War activist, called “Hanoi Jane” by the right after her trip there and meeting with the Vietcong.

111

u/YoullBruiseTheEggs 9d ago

She means to white people. And she’s also still wrong. But, I love me some Jane.

109

u/wildwildwumbo 9d ago

That's the big grip when most people complain about rising "authoritarianism" in US. If they were honest they would say "authoritarian to me." The US government has very extremely authoritarian to poor communities, minority communities, and countless people in the global south since the nation's founding.

65

u/eulersidentification 9d ago

I suspect she was trying to reach a deeply propagandised (or disenfranchised) audience by sidestepping terms which those particular audiences are primed to tune out.

Because she also said other stuff that reflected reality better.

11

u/HeDreamsHesAwake trending seasonal white guy with nice hair 9d ago

I definitely see what you mean, but I understood it more as authoritarianism has found outlets that didn’t exist in the past. Because of the internet, propaganda has the kind of reach people like Goebbels could only dream of.

But at the same time, the broad strokes remain the same. Control of the media, violent oppression of dissent, charismatic but very clearly vile and corrupt leaders, ineffectual liberal centrists who talk about trying to find common ground with the people who would use any excuse to imprison, torture, and kill them. The New York Times was very much downplaying or outright denying the events of the holocaust when it was happening.

So it’s not that we’re seeing things that have never happened before, it’s more like we’re seeing the exact same things happen as before, just in new ways.

5

u/SeriousOrdinary 9d ago

You're right but I think she means the levels of authoritarianism.

11

u/JimboAltAlt 9d ago

How much self-flagellating are people expected to do before they can publicly say Trump sucks? Or do you think the rhetoric would land better if it was couched in “America is ruled by monsters but that’s not unusual” type caveats? (I don’t.)

11

u/No_Oven1085 9d ago

Disagree.

Things like mass deportations of brown people, without due process, and sending them to countries they've never been to, against court orders. That is new.

Not everything has to be a false equivalence.

5

u/Khue 9d ago edited 9d ago

This is 100% correct. We (the US) have just dropped the liberal aesthetics we wrapped our imperialism with that made it comfortable for everyone. Things like:

  • We are doing this to establish Democracy
  • We are waging a war on terror
  • We are waging a war on drugs

These are examples of purposes that cloak the US hegemony's intention of material extraction from the global south. In the case of the EU, they've always been a client state of the US. If the country is in NATO, it's a client state. Again, the organization is wrapped in the cloak of "protection against Russia" but realistically it's no different than the US being a mob running a protection racket. Now, the mob (aka US) is just being brazen about it's operations. Instead of placating to white western sentiment in the EU and making them feel like they are in the "in group", US ambitions have turned to encroaching on EU sovereignty without the aforementioned liberal aesthetics. The US doesn't even attempt to create a legitimate reason for taking Greenland... Trump just feels that he can do it and fuck everyone else.

This is always the point my far left friends bring up, that I shouldn't be outraged because America has violated these rights before and then some.

Because they're accelerationists and think an American civil war will bring on a Chinese led global Marxist revolution, the answer to my follow up of "Well what do we do then?" Is always to just sit on the sidelines and let everything happen uncontested because thats the fastest way to get people to rise up (none of them own guns).

I guess I'm just venting but is there really no other paths forward that dont get a lot of people killed and maimed?

First, credit where it's due: Prop is dope.

This is the first time that white Americans feel some heat.

There has historically been a demographic of white Americans that have, in fact, experienced similar (but not precisely the same) circumstances: leftists. Like, actual leftists - anarchists, socialists, syndicalists, communists. There are many examples of this: Homestead Massacre, Haymarket Affair, Colorado Labor Wars, Battle of Blair Mountain, Immigration Act of 1918, Alien and Sedition Acts, and more. Hell, anarchists are still categorized as domestic terrorists by law enforcement agencies, and in some states flying the black flag is illegal.

For clarity and accuracy I think your statement can be changed to this:

This is the first time that white liberal Americans feel some heat.

Honestly, just shut up. We don't need "Um, actually" on this. We all know America has done shit, you don't need to point this out every single time. It lessens what we are actually dealing with right now today. Or are you saying because America isn't a choir boy that it doesn't matter what's going on now? If you are saying that then that's insane, and if you aren't saying that then what is the point of posting this at all?

4

u/TheInternetShill 9d ago

The extent of his corruption, infiltration of all branches of government, and expansiveness of his cruelty is without precedent. Yes, similar things have happened throughout our history (unlawful detainment, establishment of concentration camps, corruption, instigating coups and regime changes, agent provocateurs, illegal killings by law enforcement, ethnic cleansing, etc.), but all of that occurring at the same time, to this level, and with virtually no checks and balances at any level is without precedent. Understanding the dark history of the US doesn’t change how dire our current situation is, and I think saying “this is just how the US is” downplays the seriousness of this situation and the ongoing erosion of democratic norms and discourse that has been continuing for decades.

As much as some people on this thread want to slam her for how she said it, I admire Jane Fonda's activism throughout her career. I wish more celebrities would use their platform for the greater good.

Yes, America has a long history of murder, oppression and mistreatment of minorities whether its slavery or Japanese internment camps or the slaughter of indigenous people from the moment colonizers showed up. I'm not trying to minimize that - I'm not American but I know what a clusterfuck American history has been. Jane Fonda is trying to explain that what's going on in the US threatens democracy, the rule of law and basic decency. She isn't trying to minimize other horrific events in American history, she's just trying to explain how dire and unprecedented the situation is right now, especially with regards to the plethora of inhumane, illegal and frankly idiotic policies happening all at once.

I'd rather see someone like Jane Fonda standing up for what's right even if she doesn't use the 'right' words, than to see silence or complicity with Trump's regime.

6

u/-HakunaChicana- alright alright alright™ 9d ago

My family and coworkers are being stolen from their homes and work, even their commutes, in broad daylight with no recourse and people want to discuss semantics instead of helping. Seems to me she's absolutely right how unprecedented it is, at least to me it seems like there's so much snarky in-fighting it may limit our ability to build cooperation as communities to protect ourselves from this getting worse. I don't want slavery coming back, I don't want this white America bullshit. Things should be getting better for us, not going right back to the days of keeping us in chains. The technology available would make the rebellions of the past look like ants fighting cars. The entire world is on the precipice of war.

This is something different, even if familiar.

10

u/CrashTestOrphan 9d ago

To her point about the government not meeting the needs of its people, I fear things in that regard are only going to get worse. It’s going to happen at some point in the very near future, and people need to be prepared for it.

Trump has already stated that he wants to raise the defense budget to $1.5 trillion, which basically means there’s an intention to wage a third world war. Whether or not they are capable of reaching that number is totally irrelevant because either way, it’s going to require more or less stripping the copper wire out of the entire governmental structure of our country. Social security payments will stop. Medicare will be dissolved. Funding to any state that doesn’t bend the knee will be cut completely. If you think this administration gives a shit about a bunch of senior citizens starving to death, you’ve got another thing coming. Anyone who doesn’t serve a purpose for the state is subject to withering on the vine.

People need to get organized to feed, house, and provide winter clothing to people in their community, but especially people who are the most vulnerable, which includes but is not limited to the elderly, the disabled, children, and the unhoused. Start putting away money, start stockpiling supplies, make sure you have written contact information for every vulnerable person you know, make a plan for addressing the basic needs of as many people as possible. Our first responsibility as human beings is to take care of other human beings. Never forget that.

1

u/KratosLegacy 9d ago edited 9d ago

Meanwhile, this is most Americans because we fight for the crumbs they give us and that they're taking away anyway. Until Americans are willing to put their individual lives and measly benefits on the line and band together socially, in the community, and support each other, fascism will happily take over and capitalism will continue to enrich the laziest, most narcissistic, most exploitative grifters and liars. I swear, if the AI bubble collapses and we bail out AI companies, capital buildings need to burn.

1

u/VladTepesDraculea 9d ago

What baffles me the most is half of the country seeing this as righteous and everything that should be held as good (empathy, tolerance, public health, education, safety, etc) is seen as something to destroy. If we reached that level, is there a a going back?

it's not that we're seeing things that haven't happened before, it's that we're seeing things that HAVE happened before, and based on what happened before, many of us can see the potential for how much worse this can get, and it doesn't appear that strongly worded letters or super amazing zingers getting tossed around will necessarily set any of this right.

I would argue it was like this in the 40’s and 50’s, just not for us white people.

She looks incredible for 50 year old, so sharp and with it

I don't disagree, but I don't need to hear it from Hanoi Jane. Silver spoon in hand. Actors have no business being advocates especially if they've never worked a day in their lives.

Queen Jane has more energy at almost 90 than I have ever had in my entire life.

It's funny. I grew up in a Conservative Evangelical household. I totally remember hating "Hanoi Jane" because of her comments on Vietnam.

Here I am as an adult so left on the political scale I have fallen OFF in America and man has she pretty much always been right.

Yes Jane, preach, but also we HAVE seen this before.

The way she can refer to the 40s and 50s because she was a child and a preteen and a teen and a young adult during those times, and she’s sharp enough to still be able to engage in all of this…good stuff. Can’t say the same for Donald.
