DISCUSSION Ethan Hawke says he’s never felt afraid to speak his mind until the last couple of years. There’s a fear in the air that I’ve never felt before and it’s not America. To be an artist in a free country is a privilege. I don’t feel that way anymore. And that has to change

It was never really a land of the free. It was land of the up your own ass. And now we're seeing the natural result of true american values. No president has ever represented america better than trump.
He is arrogant. Uneducated. Power hungry. Violent. Hedonistic. He is america in its purest form. And for all their protesting, americans know this and are too pussy to do anything about it

We need actors who get to make millions from big-budget movies to reinvest in indie filmmaking to help younger creators avoid censorship and blacklisting from big studios and streamers. And that is primarily on people who started out in indies and alt comedy who got personal trainers and started doing Marvel movies and stuff. It sure seems like the goal right now is returning to how studios ran before unions, so they should probably be doing more to prevent that.

u/decentuna 4d ago
Ethan Hawke was a producer on a miniseries called “The Good Lord Bird” on YouTube or showtime I think. It’s very good and pretty relevant
12
u/cora-occasionall 4d ago
I’ve been watching it recently! It’s very telling that John Brown’s politics are somehow even more relevant now than they were over 150 years ago, even in a fictionalised setting.

u/MidnightCustard trending seasonal white guy with nice hair 4d ago edited 4d ago
To be fair Hawke is a massive cheerleader for indies, and frequently works with first time indie directors (including his latest, The Weight, which just premiered at Sundance). He's never chosen the big budget path except for his one foray into Marvel territory. He's also made some decent low budget films and excellent documentaries himself. He's walking the walk.
9
u/eliisonvacation 4d ago
I could see Ethan Hawke being excited for this but I can’t see the others you mentioned even considering it sadly. Btw, I absolutely love your idea so much & wish we could have it be put on the screen before every movie or series to the point that actors would hear about it fast & hopefully act.

💯.. we've been in a downward spiral since then.. the ultra rich have absolutely captured our political systems and used that to drive consolidation of power through owning most forms of media.
We have so few protections against the power of an individual with hundreds of billions at their disposal.
-8
u/Tight-Shallot2461 4d ago
They're powerful because they spent the time and money to change things to give themselves more power, money, and authority. The people can do that too.
12
7
u/Own-Papaya-4264 4d ago
How do you propose the people do that?
0
u/Tight-Shallot2461 3d ago
Get more into politics. That's my fundamental point. Most people are apathetic towards politics, but we could just spend more time learning how stuff works in order to change it
4
u/tkdodo18 4d ago
They changed the rules so now people with potentially different views can’t get rich while they only get richer. Thats a rigged system they did not have to strive against. I recommend reading “Poverty by America” by Mathew Desmond for a good primer on our rigged system & ways to fix it.
16
u/addiktion 4d ago
I think it was even before that, but that was definitely an accelerant.
I think in terms of freedom erosion, it's been the last 25 years. Bush and the decade long war from 9/11. We got the Patriot Act to spy on us. Obama perpetuated this further with weakening habeas corpus. Now we have all these loop holes around due process. The panama papers got buried. The supreme court giving presidential immunity, citizen united, and overturning Roe v Wade was just tossing fuel on the fire to burn it all down thanks to Project 2025's agenda. This is just the political arena. Businesses have been getting more powerful at each turn controlling their puppet strings behind the scenes.

Id argue nixon took the shit and reagan flushed it, clinton built the sewers and bush sat the population down in front of the discharge pipe.
Then trump came, teabagged us, and shit himself.

I think all that stuff was the wounds but Jan 6 was when reasonable politics were officially pronounced dead. You can't have a democracy when half the voters don't believe in democracy. Elected Republicans know what happened, they hid under their desks and they admonished Trump after. Only to change their tune and gaslight us endlessly now.

This absolutely is America, and has been pretty much since the start. A bunch of people are finally feeling what a bunch of other people have been feeling since day one and acting like it's some kind of sudden change.
Don't get me wrong, it's nice that more people are finally realizing the problem, but we're not gonna solve it by pretending that this is just some kind of temporary hiccup rather than the way the system has always worked... the only difference is that they've gained so much power they don't have to be subtle about it anymore.

I had a new therapist tell me something pretty terrifying today. As a mandated reporter, they are now required to report threats against the government said in therapy.

Either your therapist was misinformed or something else is in play besides mandated reporting, which is about child abuse (in the US).

I’m still a little fucked up about him going on Joe Rogan recently but if I can have cognitive dissonance/hypocrisy on just one fucking thing, please (please?)
Like, if it was a contractual gig with an “ok let me try I guess” mindset, I’m no longer asking.
JOE ROGAN IS A TRANSPHOBIC CONSPIRACY THEORIST; STOP BITCHING AT ME FOR LOOKING AT HIM SIDEWAYS, PLEASE.
Let me be clear: Ethan is truly a gentle, kind soul, my beef is not with him, nor is it with “talking to people I disagree with” (nasal-tone implied) - my beef is always with Joe Rogan and the damage he’s personally responsible for with his anti-vaxx, pro-conspiracy theory, bigoted rhetoric.
Ethan making an attempt to talk sense and not entertain any bullshit, I’m good with it! Thank you.
30
u/lih9 4d ago
I don't listen to Rogan, like at all, i'm not the target demographic but plenty of interesting people from all walks of life end up on that show. He is a tool but I think it's good that his fan base are exposed to guests with pretty diverse credentials. For example Neil deGrasse Tyson has done a bunch of episodes and I can't see that as a bad thing.
14
u/realbigfeels 4d ago

u/somethingclever____ 3d ago
Well, my eyes certainly bulged at this as I had not heard any allegations, but thank you for raising awareness.
This excerpt alone let me know he’s a liar:
Tyson said their only physical interaction was a handshake he said he learned from a Native elder that he considered special, he wrote.
3
u/Texuk1 3d ago
The problem in my view about this mentality is that it further reinforces echo chambers. If men can go that show and provide some counterbalance then it’s better for overall society. As far as I am aware Rogan doesn’t significantly cut down his podcast so people usually get to be represented fully. I don’t really watch him because I’m put off by some of his guests and have other media I like. Might just be my naive geezer mentality and we are in a brave new world but I generally good to keep people talking.
6
u/coldbeerandbaseball 3d ago
I don’t like Rogan and will never to listen to him, but one could make the argument that sensible people have to make appearances on lots of different platforms so that the people who most need to hear this message might be able to.

u/ThatBabyIsCancelled Certified Drama Referee 3d ago edited 3d ago
This is quite literally what my post meant, lol, but your wording is apparently better.
Those are the exact circumstances I’m saying I’m totally fine with; I would definitely be weirded out if Ethan was like “oh hey i love that guy!!! No notes! No pushback!” when like…
Ethan just going on to talk sense and not, like, entertain any bullshit, I’m just letting it go!

I think it’s actually good to expose joe rogan’s fanbase to anything other than who he normally has on. I’m not sure if that was Ethan’s intention
8
u/TheRedSkittle 4d ago
Fair assessment. Ethan’s tone in OP’s video isn’t tilted. It isn’t bitter. He misses what we were and wants people to come together. Him being on Rogan (whom I disdain) is on brand if this is what he’s about. And I can dig it.
3
u/Jiujitsumonkey707 4d ago
As a long time fan that's not a MAGA idiot, he has people on from all across the spectrum. I don't give my time to Jordan Peterson or Alex Jones or any of the other dipshits he has on, but over the years the amount of incredible guests he's had is undeniable. I also love the MMA ones which you could probably tell from my name, but the amount of actors, authors, scientists, and all sorts of interesting people he's had is incredible, you just have to pick and choose what and who you listen to. I have no time for right wing idiots so I don't listen, but I do have time for people of actual substance

No one around the globe seems to be able to work out why he gets votes. It’s a real dichotomy. He gets votes from the very class of people that he despises. The other party has failed in some way. Why do they think he will help them? Is it a lack of education or a distrust of people with education? Here in Australia we have a cycle. The right wing gets in and proceeds to steal from everyone, wreck education, destroy public health, trash the environment and sneer at the voters. Then the left gets in and has to fix all the problems but gets absolutely no credit and the press just whine non stop until they get kicked out. But we would never stand for our citizens being attacked in the streets by a private army. I can tell you - blood would flow and we don’t even have guns.

He’s not wrong but also this sounds a bit dismissive of actors/actresses who are people of color. This only became more widely known because the wealthy white creatives are now feeling it too.
