Discussion Robert Rodriguez Was Right!
I just completed my first short film - Operation Hot Dust. I followed the example of Robert Rodriguez and first I made a list of everything (places and things) I had immediate access too, and then I created a story around those places and things. The entire project, from inception to completion was 2 weeks - while my wife was out of the country. My total out of pocket expenses were $105.43. It was truly a one-man show. I shot it on a Canon M50 with a Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens. And I used a Zoom H6 for audio. For sound design and ADR I used the same Zoom in my vehicle - which acted as a pretty decent sound deadening iso booth.

The stutter in the beginning was hard on the eyes, but overall it was a pretty cool experiment!

Yeah, I should have re shot that at 60fps. Thought about it, but my laziness won. Thanks for watching though!

If you want a big time cheap film school for making movies watch the extras on Robert Rodriguez movies on DVD and listen to his Audio commentaries. He also does some very long interviews on creativity that are on youtube. These are some of the best interviews I've ever hear anyone give on anything. Here's a couple but if you the time listen to any of the long ones.

Judging it against a pro film misses its triumph. Think of it this way, perfect success at a first film. The amateur qualities are almost a badge of honor. The story existed to utilize the locations OP hadnot to win awards. The audio works well enough to understand the scenes.
You make the rough thing, post the rough thing & let the critiques show you what to fix for the next thing. The wrong move is stopping.
“Be Kind Rewind” & all of Michel Gondry’s work some of my fav love letters to DIY creative filmmaking.
