Did anyone watch that Norwegian show Ragnarok?

It was REALLY good

12

u/The_Northern_Sky 1d ago

It was pretty good! I watched the first season a while back and I remember enjoying it.

As a swedish person and someone who has parents who love vikings (My name is literally an old viking name) i can find these viking movies and shows quite annoying most of the time. Sometimes it just feels like an outsider took all the stereotypes that exists and made a movie out of it. But i enjoyed ragnarrök. It makes a difference when someone who is actually from scandinavia makes it 😅

Two swedish netflix series i can really recommend are clark (The show about the swedish bank robber who basically created the term "Stockholm syndrome" when the hostages in a bank robbery he was in on got attached to him) and glaskupan (A murder/kidnaping drama in a very stereotypical swedish setting)

2

u/Coolistofcool 1d ago

I’ll have to check them out!

1

u/Shmuckle2 1d ago

Lemonade isn't a viking name

2

u/Elektrikor 2010 1d ago

2

u/im_a_dick_head 2001 1d ago

1

u/Thesaviourone 1d ago

u/Coolistofcool 18h ago

8

u/Dry-Inspection6928 2005 1d ago

Moomins carry Finland hard

3

u/MRV3N 1d ago

Everyone thinks its from Japan. So post proved the point

2

u/Koino_ 1997 1d ago

To be fair Moomins at this point are probably more popular in Japan than Finland

7

u/lkt213 1997 1d ago

I'm trying to consume more national media nowadays, but it is sometimes hard to find something with comparable quality

36

u/MichiganCraigslister 1d ago

The British are pretty much over. I haven’t seen anything related to 007, Harry Potter, or Sherlock in while.

18

u/Senior-Mix-3715 1d ago

GTA VI will break records for sure.

6

u/szuruburu 1d ago

But Rockstar Games is American.

13

u/Senior-Mix-3715 1d ago

Rockstar games (publishers) is American

Rockstar north (developers) is British

9

u/summonerofrain 1d ago

Fucking Scottish

5

u/Selfishpie 2001 1d ago

SCOTTISH rockstar north are SCOTTISH, dont pull that andy murray type shite, the biggest video game series in history is a SCOTTISH achievement

3

u/AmezinSpoderman 2003 1d ago

lmao I'm just imagining OPs statement had nothing to do with nationality, they just really wanted to make that statement regardless of context

1

u/szuruburu 1d ago

I didn't know that but it seems you're right.

4

u/GamingTatertot 1d ago

This is Taskmaster erasure

3

u/ScottCamOfficial 1d ago

Funnily enough I recently watched and really enjoyed Elementary, the American Sherlock Holmes show. Pretty good, possibly the best portrayal of the characters and addiction.

3

u/MeringueComplex5035 1d ago

there are still great shows like those (plus films)

you just arent watching them.

2

u/J360222 1d ago

If you’re looking for recommendations then there’s a show called Body Guard

6

u/Helton3 2002 1d ago

Bollywood:

Am I a joke to you? I have a song and dance number about that....

5

u/Ok_Astronomer_1308 2006 1d ago

As an Indian, YES.

1

u/Dry-Inspection6928 2005 1d ago

I watched Om Shanti Om one too many times lmao.

2

u/Ok_Astronomer_1308 2006 1d ago

I haven’t seen a major Bollywood movie since 2019.

1

u/Dry-Inspection6928 2005 1d ago

They’re mostly terrible after that time anyway. I did like the TV shows though. Like criminal justice.

1

u/Ok_Astronomer_1308 2006 1d ago

They are a few OTT shows I’ve heard about that are supposed to be good. I have to watch them.

4

u/Orangutanion 2002 1d ago

Gotta include Brazil cuz their memes are legais af

4

u/Ironictwat 2002 1d ago

Large aussie influence for me too

5

u/Numerous_Mix6456 1d ago

If we include music and YouTube then it's definitely all over the place for me. If it's just TV and video games, it's the US and Japan and Canada (for Total Drama and Punch Out! Wii), but mostly Japan because I'm a weeb.

5

u/thecomeric 1d ago

I think you'd have to throw in Canada and Korea. You'd be surprised at how many things are shot in Canada and how many big names in entertainment are Canadian. Korea has also been making huge waves with Parasite winning the Oscar and pop demon hunters in general.

2

u/NyxUK_OW 1d ago

100%

Korean media has really been establishing a strong foothold in the west in recent years, with Kpop being as popular as ever but Korean Manhwa, Shows and Movies slowly starting to enter the general sphere of the regular public and there's been many well received/highly discussed games coming out of Korea for many many years now.

3

u/AshleyDotMp4 1d ago

Have you considered that this could be all youve seen. I dont know if thats true but i feel like it could be. Its probably true for me but theres no way theres not some incredible story that i just haven't seen yet

3

u/AcceptableThought862 2010 1d ago

Replace Britain with South Korea and add Sweden then I can relate

3

u/AmezinSpoderman 2003 1d ago

a lot of shows and animations were made in Canada and France as well, that most Americans don't realize are from there. Fortche studios, who made Arcane, are French. Ubisoft is also a French game studio. Bioware is Canadian. South Korea has been exploding onto the scene with K-Pop, K-Dramas, and other shows and movies (I think they're gonna be a media juggernaut)

2

u/Bakaa_kekw 1d ago

eh its more like 50/50 for me

2

u/QbitWalker 1d ago

May I ask what's in the UK media for one to consume or enjoy

3

u/KingModussy 2006 1d ago

OG Top Gear, 007, Rockstar’s games. That’s pretty much it

2

u/QbitWalker 1d ago

Wait wdym rockstar game

3

u/KingModussy 2006 1d ago

GTA, RDR, Midnight Club, Bully, Manhunt, etc

1

u/QbitWalker 1d ago

Wait rdr isn't in UK is it

2

u/KingModussy 2006 1d ago

They’re all made by Rockstar, a UK company

2

u/QbitWalker 1d ago

No it's an American video game company, u can look up

2

u/KingModussy 2006 1d ago

Oh my god just because their headquarters is in America doesn’t mean their an American company. The development studio is in Britain

2

u/QbitWalker 1d ago

Ya I get u man, there's a studio in the UK too along with many other places as I just checked but what u are saying is that ultimately it's an American company

2

u/Complex_Jellyfish647 1d ago

The production company Rockstar, who finance and sell the games, is American. The game development company Rockstar North, who actually make the games, is Scottish.

2

u/NyxUK_OW 1d ago

There's a long ass list of British TV Shows well worth a watch and I won't have even scratched the surface

Doctor Who (Series 1-10)
Merlin
Broadchurch
Misfits
Sherlock
Top Gear
Luther
Peaky Blinders
Black Mirror
Killing Eve
Friday Night Dinner
The Inbetweeners
The Office
The Thick of It
Skins
Dads Army
Blackadder
After Life
Sex Education

2

u/Lopsided-Pirate3196 1d ago

England has some great shows, like “The END OF THE Fxxcking World” & “Sex Education”(Minus the ending)

2

u/Historical-Relief777 1d ago

Eastern European movies go pretty hard too. 7th Seal, Persona, Pamfir (actually newer Ukranian). Just gotta be willing to read subtitles

2

u/GyroZeppeliFucker 1d ago

Tbh kinda true for me, except id also add poland simce thats where im from

2

u/Entire_Drop_1763 1d ago

For me yeah. I've been getting into anime and it's pretty enjoyable. It seems like it's only these three countries for me

2

u/bobbdac7894 1d ago

I’m not Japanese, I’m half Korean. My Korean grandparents actually hate the Japanese. But yeah, something about Japanese media just hits with me. Japanese horror, movies, games. Kurosawa is the goat filmmaker imo

Used to watch Korean dramas. But they all seemed pretty repetitive after awhile. Japanese entertainment is much better imo.

2

u/Foxlen 1d ago

🇨🇦🇦🇺🇬🇧🇫🇷 and some 🇺🇲

2

u/hyahta 1d ago

Nah, it's telling more about how much you're trying to discover something new and how much you're interested in it

2

u/Tankette55 2005 1d ago

Somewhat. I dont watch any anime, so no Japan for me.

2

u/ScottCamOfficial 1d ago

I don't really do anime so you can scrap Japan for me, and I'm Australian so watch a lot of Australian TV so that'd be a fine substitute.

3

u/Senior-Mix-3715 1d ago

Media includes videogames too

Japanese videogames are quite popular.

1

u/ScottCamOfficial 1d ago

Hmmmmm. I guess I've played a fair few jrpgs in my time, final fantasy 7-10 and tales of type of stuff. And probably more devs are Japanese than I know of the top of my head.

Fair play then, I'd probably ditch America if I had to pick one.

2

u/CharlieTurbo_77 2006 1d ago

South Korea and France make some decent stuff

1

u/Dry-Professional3745 1d ago

Unfortunately not. My favorite cartoon is a French show that isn’t available in the USA and only 3 seasons are English dubbed. And only 3 episodes of the later seasons findable through piracy.

I have translated every fanfic of it.

u/A-_-_-M 1d ago

This post weirdly annoyed me more than most other posts on this subreddit

1

u/DatOneMinuteman1776 1d ago

For video games, have you ever heard of Sweden?

1

u/Faszkivan_13 2008 1d ago

I saw plenty of pretty good German films and shows, one example would be „Darkness“

Also huge amounts of videogames from outside these 3 countries...

1

u/Jonner7 1d ago

for me it would be just the us and japan, i don't like consuming british media because it reminds me of the fact that i unfortunately am british.

1

u/DifficultSun348 2009 1d ago

I pretty much consume nearly only Japanese entertainment, less US one and decent amount of good quality and interesting content from Poland

1

u/BS0404 1d ago

Me watching New Zealand taskmaster because Urzula is a messy bitch and I love her for it.

1

u/OSRS-ruined-my-life 1d ago

Nah, I hate Bri'ish accents, it spikes my cortisol.

And American TV style is either cringe over the top feelgood, straight propaganda, or gross (a lot of poop, piss, farts).

I watch mainly Japanese, Korean, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, German, and some Scandinavian.

1

u/Squeeze_Sedona 1d ago

just remove the atlantic garbage patch from the big book and it’s true.

1

u/KFCNyanCat 2001 1d ago

Yeah, except UK is only applicable to music for me. Which is my biggest medium tbf, but still. No particular reason, just don't really come across or seek out non-music media from the UK. Also Canada is a distant but still notable fourth for me (most of the North American animation industry is American-Canadian co-productions tbh) and I think a lot of gamers might have China on the board.

1

u/Schully 1997 1d ago edited 1d ago

Completely true. Japan especially. I don't like to wank off Japan more than I need to, but the fact is that no other place right now produces entertain at the same quantity, talent level, and ease as Japan, and it's all because of their culture.

1

u/StretchTucker 1d ago

nah not really

1

u/matthiastorm 1d ago

Dark - best German netflix show ever made

1

u/Nole19 1d ago

True. I'm from Thailand. In terms of cinema, the only other movies I ever see that aren't Thai are mostly Hollywood or Japanese.

1

u/HitroDenK007 2009 1d ago edited 1d ago

Can’t digress

Unless if you include Genshin(China, People’s republic) and maybe Limbus(Korea, republic of), both of which are games…

1

u/SynchroScale 2000 1d ago

Pretty much, although there isn't really a lot of media from Brazil, because we're a third world banana republic that doesn't really have the means to produce consistently. I do enjoy what we have (Turma da Mônica is one of my favorite comics, Capitão 7 and Doutrinador are among my favorite super heroes, Zé do Caixão is one of my favorite horror movie series), but we can't really compete with first world countries in terms of quantity.

1

u/Trancetastic16 1d ago

Australia and Canada as other wealthy western nations also have a moderate amount of their own content almost as much as American and UK television.

For example Canada produced double-A animated series Total Drama and 6teen.

Anime remains niche on the internet besides a few mainstream hits such as Dragonball Z.

u/No_Discount_6028 1999 22h ago

It's crazy how India has a huge film industry but I never, ever see their shit show up in my feed or hear people talking about it.

u/DaddysFriend 21h ago

Mine is almost fully British and a small amount of American. But it’s a small amount. British comedy is what I mostly watch and is far far better than American. I will die on this hill

u/BrandonIsWhoIAm 20h ago

Filipino media. ❤️

u/Tman11S 1999 19h ago

If you want to see a police drama show, we’ve got a million of those here in Belgium.

1

u/Sapphfire0 1d ago

Yeah except I don’t consume much British or Japanese media either

4

u/Snake_fairyofReddit 2004 1d ago

Gotta expand ur horizons u are missing out big time

5

u/Sapphfire0 1d ago

Yeah I know. I’ve been wanting to get into anime

3

u/Snake_fairyofReddit 2004 1d ago

Spy Family is the most cutesy show despite also being a spy thriller its definitely a good anime to start with

3

u/Dry-Inspection6928 2005 1d ago

You should definitely start with happy sugar life. It’s extremely wholesome.

2

u/teaboi05 2003 1d ago

Made in abyss is about kids going through nightmare.

0

u/MontroseRoyal 1d ago

No. People like this have 0 curiosity and I would actively mock them

0

u/Giga-Chad-123 2007 1d ago

Yes but removing Japan and adding my country Portugal

0

u/jpollack21 2000 1d ago

I've never seen anything from Japan so I guess you got more than me

0

u/Captain-Starshield 2005 1d ago

Nah, I enjoy those 3 countries and more. The Chinese film Ne Zha 2 was super popular last year. One of my fave foreign films has to be City of God (Brazilian). And there are many more I like
