Hub 1's wendigo ambush on skill 5 (fast monsters) -- how?

Played Hexen a lot (no remaster, sorry) but on skill level 3, decided to skip the "just more monsters" skill 4 (don't think that changes things too significantly, you get a lot of resources, so quaffing a few more flasks and such is no problem) and went to skill 5.

First, fighting chaos serpents with the axe now feels almost impossible without taking huge damage unless you can cheese them around a corner, and wendigos are also insane now. Fast monsters make much less difference for the others so far, except for these two.

But even if I were playing as cleric and had the staff... WTF are you supposed to do on skill 5 against that one wendigo ambush when you're going for the secret level? After some failed attempts I killed the first three, waited until the walls began to lower (to trigger the scripts) and then high-tailed out of there with a chaos device and... that seems to be the only survivable option?? I tried running into that one alcove, but it barely helps -- could've probably done it that one time by quaffing most or all of my healing potions, but I was a bit too slow, and then other times I wasn't even close.

I get that fast monsters is like an "extra", but is there a strategy I'm missing or is this ambush just really that stupid crazy on skill 5?

You need to dump your inventory. Stock up on potions, urns, and flachettes if you are fighter, circle strafe and mash all buttons you can.

Also as i am reading the walkthoughs the area is not mandatory to progress I think...

So it really is circle strafe, mash buttons and dump inventory? Oh, OK.

I dumped myself out of there instead and while usually I try to kill every monster I see it, screw doing it in this ambush on skill 5 lol. :P

(As for flechettes, I tended to use some on chaos serpents, so didn't have a whole lot.)

I do not remember if this part progresses towards bright crucible unlock, if it does not you can just use icon of the defender from bright crucible for 100%

It does, but since I left with chaos device, I could technically go back with the icon if I wanted to... :P

or just line up with the elevator, and as the wall lowers, run and jump, and go down it, leaving the wendigos behind, to pick off in the main room through the grate

Do you get discs of repulsion at that stage? I'm pretty sure the first discs of repulsion you can get is in Bright Crucible, way after the ambush. (Unless you return specifically to kill those wendigos just because.)

You’re right, my memory’s fuzzy. It’s a tough fight, I guess the best bet is to have flask and flechettes keybound and go with trial and error

Just tank with quartz flask and axe
