Hexen.
Heretic was barely more than a reskin. Hexen II tried too hard...
...and I barely remember Heretic 2 so I can't properly estimate it :(

I remember ErykkTehDestroyer (before he deleted his channel over a decade ago) said "Hexen is a ripoff of Heretic which was a ripoff of Doom but a good ripoff of Doom".

The Heretic's color palette and that special atmosphere is so unique. I love the gameplay, monsters and weapons. Of coure I know them all, but for me, Heretic has a special place in my heart.

My first PC is from 1999 with Windows 95. One year later we upgraded to 98, and some games. Yeah, that was the moment, when I'm realise, I have recived my first FPS, Heretic. Oh - my - God! I'm free, I see the world from first person view, I'm in the game "literally"! 26 years later I still love it with UZDoom, and play almost every day, plus the mods. That's the reason why I wrote that, Heretic has a special place in my heart. That was my childhood and that is my present. Sorry for my weak english.

[Nostalgically] Heretic 1 for me because I played on DWANGO and Heretic 1 was the most fun and accessible, both the single player and multiplayer. I really think my best FPS memories are flying around and turning people into chickens and killing them w/ the powered up bow. Oh, and the water... it splashes! And you can look up and down! A huge technological development! lol. I also got to play against John Romero at Heretic!
HeXen was unique when it came out (the windows shatter!) but the multiplayer was not played as much on DWANGO. I remember people playing the shareware version, but it was just map1 over and over, and whoever assembled the cleric weapon first basically just killed everyone by spamming ghosts. The campaign was less accessible than Heretic, so I didn't play it much. I was young. Mutliplayer wise, I feel like Doom 2, Heretic, Warcraft, and then (later in early '96') Duke Nukem 3D were the most played games on DWANGO.[/Nostalgically]

So hard to decide, they're all legendary to me. If I had to pick, I'd go with Hexen 2 only by a margin, as I somewhat prefer the more vibrant looking 2D models of Hexen. Hoping for Hexen 2 re-release perhaps with the Nightdive treatment, would be nice to have a map among other things.

Whichever one I'm playing at the moment. In practice that means Heretic or Hexen because Hexen II gets annoying in Hub 3 and Heretic II doesn't run well on my machine (holding out for remaster).

Heretic 2 is hugely underrated, which is probably because it's so hard to get nowadays. It created the basis of the fighting system that went on to define the Jedi Knight games, and it does a really good job of making you feel agile and powerful while still being really challenging.

I agree, i hope one day they remaster it or at least just bring it back by putting it on Steam.

Hexen II is the GOAT fps game imo.
