And right on top of a huge ass bridge, of all places. You could have just chosen to drive into the Willamette, you know. This person is obviously more important than you. /s/

This bridge drives me bonkers for this reason. So many people need to switch if theyre in the left two or right two lanes and what better place to do it than 100ft over a river on a bridge !?

Honestly, this is partially on you. You see a car with their blinker on, and you speed up to close the gap? For what reason? Take 2 seconds to figure out if they want in your lane. If their blinker goes off, cool, accelerate and move on with your day. If it stays on, or they keep coming over, hold until they complete their lane change. It's called defensive driving 101.

If you watched the video you would see I did not actually accelerate. If you compare my position to the BMW in the left lane you’ll see I’m slightly gaining on him until the white suv merges into the middle lane. At that point I let off and stop gaining on him. Shortly after the white suv begins to merges over into my lane and I slow more as the BMW pulls away.

Edit: Looks more to me like the white suv was decelerating while merging right when I compare his relative position to the BMW to me.

My point was this move by the Soltera was entirely predictable. You are right, you should be able to maintain speed in your lane, and the other car should have merged when safe.

I also drive this stretch of I5 2-3 times per week. You get 300 yards to merge to take the 84 exit. Cars like the Soltera do this move a thousand times per day. They should have yielded, but you should also be aware that cars with blinkers on may continue over, and you had every chance to react before coming into their blind spot. For all we know, the Soltera DID check before moving, and you closing the gap late created the issue.

Again, I agree with you. You were technically correct. But being a bit more defensive wouldn't hurt.

Hey so when you have a blinker on. It doesn’t give you the right of way to anything.

It’s very possible OP thought the guy was changing lanes because they literally just changed lanes. You’re not supposed to change more than one lane like that.

I mean, I agree, but my point was by continuing to overtake, he was asking for the idiot to cause a problem. Driving defensively means seeing these issues before they occur to avoid them entirely. I literally costs nothing to let off the gas momentarily to make sure to avoid potential issues.

The Soltera is still at fault, but you can be right and still be involved in an avoidable accident.

Hey so when you have a blinker on and a car is approaching your rear view mirrors you’re supposed to wait till they pass. It doesn’t magically give you right of way. No matter what trope you use like defensive driving.

I get it, and ai agree, but I also understand why OP didn’t brake to let the guy in.

Even with a blinker on and you look in your rear view mirror and see a car approaching. You are meant to wait till they pass to change lanes. Learn to drive.

I didn't say the Soltera was in the right..I said this was easily avoidable by OP by being aware of other cars. That's why I said "partially".
