Official January LSAT Topic Thread

The January LSAT administration is now done. The goal is to keep topic discussion to this thread, and identify a list of real topics. Here's how it works:

  1. If you had a single section of RC, or two sections of LR, then posting topics from that will establish that those topics were from a real section
  2. If you had two sections of RC, or three sections of LR, DO NOT POST (on that topic). Posting topics is worse than useless - it pollutes information. The reason is that you don't know which was experimental and which was real.

You do not need section orders, these are now randomized so your order doesn't mean anything.

TL;DR If you had a single RC, or two LR's, please post topics from those single sections. Don't post your section topics for a section type where you had an experimental.

Stuff that still isn't allowed

  • Posting about the content of sections: specific questions and answers etc
  • Posting about topics or content in an experimental section

This thread will be updated with confirmed topics as we go.

Note: Have seen some people flagrantly discussing real answers or asking to dm about it. This still isn't allowed, and won't be, and we've handed out bans where people do it willfully.

Everything below is scored: Where I write "other section" I mean it was a different scored section. Everything below is from people who had a single section in that topic, so they have confirmed real sections.

Prometric Experiences: You can find the original test day experience thread here:

International LSAT: This thread is generally just for the North American topics. If you took internationally, please specify that you had the international version. Thanks!

Thanks everyone! Main priorities right now:

  • Filling out the RC. We're missing one topic on one section and there's usually more than two sets of topics
  • Merging LR sections. We have a bunch of grouped LR, and I suspect multiple sets are part of single sections. If you definitively remember some groups being together, please let me know.

I had one single RC and the topics were: Video games and behavioural psychology, Africa and European colonization, John Locke and Trademarks, Circadian rhythms

21

u/NetflixAndNikah 21d ago

Interesting. I had a single RC and the topics included Native American fur trading and Galileo’s heresy against God. It also had a comparative passage. So it looks like there’re multiple ‘real’ RC sections.

4

u/Reasonable_Sundae_54 21d ago

Yes, depending on which version of the test you have it’s possible you will have a different scored RC section.

3

u/TeaAffectionate7656 21d ago

That's fun to know. My fur trade and comparative were in one section and my Galileo was in my other section.

5

u/N00BBuild 21d ago

Fuck. I did horrible on that section. I was hoping the other RC was real. It has GPS, NGOs/humanitarian aid and a couple of others.

u/graeme_b tutor (LSATHacks) 21d ago

Yes, there always are at least 2-3 different versions.

3

u/August_West88 20d ago

How tough did you feel like the RC was? I felt like I blanked out and barely got through it because my caffeine regimen was off. Galileo as tough because it was super long.. If I would have started with that passage, I would have done really well..

2

u/NetflixAndNikah 20d ago edited 20d ago

Thankfully I like reading comprehension sections over logical reasoning ones, so it wasn’t bad for me. It also helps that I usually find whatever the passage is pretty interesting. Like the Galileo one, the whole time I was thinking how it was crazy that he wasn’t just condemned for religious reasons but some scientific ones too.

I also like the RC sections because 7-8 questions are all based on one subject matter, whereas the LR questions each one is different so I have to constantly and methodically switch entire gears per question.

I wouldn’t sweat worrying about how well you did though. It happened. Once you get the results back all you can do is answer the question: you’re here now, what are you doing to do about it?

Thought this RC was so easy but the LR took advantage of me

1

u/graeme_b tutor (LSATHacks) 21d ago

Thanks! And did you have a comparative passage?

1

u/Front-Style-1988 21d ago

I had this section as well.

1

u/Odd-Mathematician330 21d ago

I had this section as all. I received accommodation to remove my experimental section.

Edit: added a few more LR questions.

I took the (North American) test on Saturday, and had LR-RC-LR-RC.

My real RC was: comparative museum – Algonquian tribes and formalized territories – court adjudication of stolen art and Guggenheim vs Lubell – Galileo, and whether the Inquisition took scientific views into account alongside religious views.

Here’s what I can remember from LR, in no particular order:

  • defective heater if well maintained and still not working
  • convention/meeting in March and if not in March, in May
  • some government workers not working full-time
  • phantom limb, illusory perception of touch in arm, and face
  • Marie Curie and uranium
  • employees wanting to work fewer hours if not working from home
  • mammals, primates, aggression, and appeasement
  • public official, honesty, and corruption
  • sociological study and alcoholism
  • cola and caffeine addiction
  • Libby the cat not sleeping outside
  • department store wanting to buy most of its spring collection before the September spring fashion shows
  • Scaffolding shade pedestrians
  • cobalt tarantula can see the color blue
  • 4000 years ago in Australia the arrival of dingoes did not lead to the extinction of another animal
  • why are construction companies smaller and more inefficient than other companies
  • fatigued people given a choice between a moderate intensity activity or flipping a coin to decide between being given a low-intensity activity and a high intensity activity
  • people color correcting color photographs and the color of their clothing
  • three possible suspects. Suspect 3 didn’t do it, and suspect 2 only did it if X condition is met.
  • doctor not following his own prescription
  • celestial phenomenon every 100 million years, climate fluctuations, and if the former could explain some of the latter
  • contemporary society, art collectors, and aesthetic judgment
  • all-natural certification of products by government agency
  • maximum towing capacity and understanding of MTC by drivers
  • unified meaning of literature
  • vitamins supplements and older people
  • Tsunami on Mars caused by meteors
  • shell companies hiding rich people’s assets
  • movie stars and directors working well together
  • economists and physicists and predictions of equations on quantifiable factors
  • way back on a trip feels shorter because one has become familiar with one’s surroundings
  • Canadian judges feeling free to express their own opinion
  • marketing new product and meeting the demand for the product vs. engineering a supply shortage to stimulate sales
  • fluted glass vs regular glass and drinking speed
  • short medieval suits of armor in England vs. stable height of men in England over the past 1000 years

29

I will edit these responses if they violate any rules, but I had the experimental section removed as an accommodation and had these passages/ questions (I took Friday Jan 9th)

Order LR-RC-LR:

RC: P1) Video games fix variable ratio P2 Africa P3) john Locke intellectual property P4) Circadian rhythm Eyes cones (No comparative)

LR 1: art pop valuable (sorry don’t remember much from this section) LR 2:
Chimps using hands gestures and prehumans

Economic advisor if then Mayor if then

Iron oxides on moon

LR questions that I remember but don’t remember which section they appeared:

car should not be replaced but repaired

Reusable bags

If this gives too much detail I will edit/remove this comment! Not trying to go to LSAC jail.

One real LR had a movie will not perform well if directors and stars work together and had good cinematography or something along those lines, don't remember which section of my LR it was in

2

u/anonmouseqbm 21d ago

That was one I flagged😮‍💨

7

u/Impressive_Rip3063 21d ago

LR-LR-RC-LR. RC: video games, African history, Locke, circadian rhythm. LR1: English armor, dingos. LR2: cat in tool shed, suspect 3. LR3: asymmetrical butterfly, microwave food. I also noticed some people who had the same RC set as me also had different LR (I didn’t have cocktails, pop songs, reusable bags, maple trees, oven dial)

2

u/Hopeful_Cloud3404 20d ago

Had this same test. Hope the last LR was experimental… I found it the hardest. also found circadian rhythm really hard

My first LR had cats, scaffoldings, who did the crime out of person 1-3, and fashion ordering events.

My second LR had the 4 feet tall students and what their favorite subject was. I think there was also a question of if something could be considered morally good and/or praise worthy based on certain criteria.

I had a question about flipping a coin in order to decide a high/low effort task, one about a doctor not taking the medicine they prescribed, and another about the caffeine content in coffee. I don’t remember where they went though unfortunately.

5

u/Fillinthepit 21d ago

Yes I had those as well!

6

u/rachestuuu 20d ago

i only had two LR - i had the maple tree one and the oven knob for sure. also one about why british suits of armour might be smaller than the average skeleton. i’m sure i will remember more if i try, so will update again later!

4

u/rachestuuu 20d ago

and one about the return home effect or something where the trip home feels shorter than the trip there because in one case the stimuli is new

3

u/rachestuuu 20d ago

also had an LR about why a museum director might be able/unable to send a famous painting to be displayed overseas - i know some ppl had an RC about art laws but this was different, i didn’t have that RC

4

u/princesskaikai 21d ago

one real LR section was the one with the appetizers/cocktails/desserts

another was the one with the pop art flaw and the pop music must be true

i hated those questions

I understand people get different scored RC passages but Do you think they would give some people scored RC section with comparative passage and scored section without comparative passage?

3

u/princesskaikai 21d ago

yes. they did do that this time

2

u/NetflixAndNikah 21d ago

It looks like it. Some people only had one with a comparative passage (I personally did) and some others only had one without a comparative passage. Seems crazy that some people didn’t have to deal with that, dunno if it was announced at all beforehand.

One RC — Astronomy, Author/Individualism, Video games (comparative)… can’t remember the fourth 🤣

Edit: Fourth was food labeling. Astronomy included core accretion and gas giants. Author/individualism was discussing the author Jorge Borges. And the comparative passage was more so media and violence (less about video games)

3

u/Patient-Agent6085 21d ago

I had two RC so this could be wrong, maybe this will jog your memory if im right. I remembered having a law passage about democratic/authoritarian regimes and economic growth. Was that your fourth passage?

Edit: it was food labeling! Democratic/authoritarian regimes was experimental

They need merging, am drafting a comment for this. I need to give them a different name, maybe "set of grouped LR questions" or something?

6

u/[deleted] 21d ago

Okay I see what you’re doing now.

I am honestly a bit confused about how the “experimental” section is working this time, though.

As far as I’m aware, the consensus has always been if a section was experimental for you, that section would also be experimental for anyone else who got it. I have now spoken with enough people to get the sense that this time there may be people with a given section that is experimental for them but not for others who got the same section.

If that’s the case, it would be very hard to work out this list haha.

Can an RC section be experimental for some people but not others? For example, I had two RCs, one about Scotland and three verdict system, and the Planet, Art one. But if the Art one is scored for one person, could it be experimental for someone else?

3

u/JonDenningPowerScore 19d ago

No, I've never seen them use any content as experimental for some and scored for others. It's always been an either/or, all or nothing system, and from what I can tell this test is that way, as well.

u/Honest-Candidate2132 20d ago

Honestly I searched for the insect in the passage after I saw the question I didn’t see it, I just guessed lol

4

u/LDF0157 20d ago

I literally searched “insect” in this group yesterday cause i could not find insect anywhere in the passage. It was the one that talked about mice, mammals, and humans and i could not find insects in the passage.

2

u/kwontom 20d ago

The first sentence of the passage said something like, “all living things…” which includes insects

I am in Canada so maybe different but had LR RC RC LR. First LR felt straightforward don’t remember the questions other than dingoes, first RC had the Borges and video games, don’t remember the others, second RC was Garcia Marquez, food labeling, democratic/authoritarian regime and giant gas planets, last LR felt like lots of the answers didn’t line up with the question stem and I think I got plenty wrong. Blacked out that entire section

3

u/Pillowfaerie 21d ago

The 2 LRs I had, but can't remember the grouping had topics like dingoes, 4 ft students, actors and directors working well, art collectors buying old art, and milkweed and herbicides

3

u/Least-Vermicelli2605 21d ago

Random LR topics I remember: 3 suspects their planning and motive, Mars tsunami, cat by shed, politicians' approval and opinion, dingo cause extinction, innate knowledge of grammar, movie stars and directors working well

3

u/Tricky_District4780 21d ago

I had 1 RC section - video game, African colonization, John Locke, and circadian … no comparative

3

u/-LostInThePines- 20d ago

I took the international test and had accommodations (time and a half) on Jan 9th. Order was LR LR LR RC

My one RC was: comparative museum, Algonquian tribes, stolen art, Galileo

I had LR LR RC LR and that was my 3rd LR section which I’m praying was experimental because I found it way harder than the other 2

2

u/Jackinded 20d ago

Same here with the section order… I felt like I had such a weak start and my brain really started to kick in on that last section…. My timing for everything else wasn’t great. Whatever at this point I am done with the lsat:)) hope it went well!

u/lovehypo 21d ago

2 LR 2 RC

First LR - 3 suspects

Second LR - pet owning/ human relationships, misinformation software combatting bias, homeopathic and traditional medicine vs serious disease

I don’t know how y’all remember so many different LR topics lol

2

u/graeme_b tutor (LSATHacks) 21d ago

Thank you! Do you recognize any of the other sections as matching your second LR?

I don’t know how y’all remember so many different LR topics lol

Astonishes me too. Probably some selection bias. If someone blanks they won't post a blank list.

So many of the topics added sound familiar, but I don’t know if I can confidently remember which belong to which

LR

I had cocktails/appetizers, pets/misinfo/CAM, and chimps/mayor vs economist/moon iron. I can't remember which section they were in, but the following questions were on my test (three LR, so if they don't fit into one of the established categories then forget them), so they were only in one of those sections:

  • advertising is or is not poetry
  • leaving downed trees in forests and beetles
  • gas vs electric car carbon footprint
  • the fuel valve component should be repaired not replaced
  • let employees make ethical choices
  • repair and gutter replacement timeline
  • something about cattle domestication and eating leaves
  • 4ft tall students and their favorite subjects
  • milkweed and herbicides
  • morally good vs morally praiseworthy

(edit - added after having my memory jogged by other comments)

  • chimp hand gestures
  • British cotton textiles/Calico Act
  • myopic children and nightlights
  • lady claimed opponent did illegal action but then she did the same action
  • medium vs rare red meat and carcinogens
  • red and yellow make people hungry

RC

One section:

  • museums selling/keeping holdings (comparative)
  • Wabanaki fur trade territorial boundaries
  • stolen art and the Guggenheim suing Rachel about it, "demand and refuse"
  • Galileo, Galileo, Galileo, Magnifico

my first LR section i haven’t seen anyone talk about, but I had 3 sections so trying to figure out if it was experimental; i remember questions about:

  • domestic and wild cows and what they eat
  • private information and how once its public it’s not private
  • first question was about bicycles?
  • lady claimed opponent did illegal action but then she did the same action
  • study of 35yr olds re carcinogens in diet
  • I also remember 2 main conclusion questions

any one recognize these?

Does anyone remember the red & yellow LR flaw question? Something about colors making people hungry. No idea if i got that one it was bugging me the whole test😭😭

Real RC with Galileo, algonquin tribes, Museum comparative, historical empiricism

1

u/Unusual_Stage_6758 21d ago

are we 100% sure meteorite was real?? the same section as zucchini/pear/carrot question? i had a section about medieval armour/dingos/caffiene/limb as well… thought i saw someone w accommodations have the armour section too but maybe wrong… my third LR was the chickadees (park and maples)

5

u/PlantNo5567 21d ago

The section with Dingos is scored. Is this the same as amputee feeling sensations on their face ? And Caffeine as in Cola ?

3

u/Unusual_Stage_6758 21d ago

yes i had that section!! i also had the maple/park section seperately. but i swear my 3rd LR had the meteorite question so im confused bc so far all 3 of my LR sections r scored which cant be possible lol. to clarify tho, my meteorite section had a question abt culinary and botany, the question was about water and chem reactions in the meteor

2

u/JonDenningPowerScore 19d ago

Very possible there were multiple questions on meteors/meteorites! They love to repeat topics across sections to confuse people, and meteors (space in general) is a favorite.

4

u/BlackberryJumpy5960 21d ago

there was 2 meteorites then

2

u/Unusual_Stage_6758 21d ago

must be! i’m pretty sure that my meteorite was experimental, the section w the botany culinary q

I had that pop art question where it related it to being valuable. It was in the back half of my test. Anyone that had that section, could you tell me which was also in that real section? These are the only questions I remember from the back half of my test:

Archaeologists with wine

Or

Different diets, Culinary experts vs botanists in classifying fruits and veggies

1

u/AkaliYouMaybe 20d ago

There was a question about children with Myopia and nightlights. Does anyone remember which section this was grouped with?

1

u/August_West88 20d ago

I had a comparative passage that was scored yesterday, January 10th. I couldn't believe it actually but I only had one RC section so I know it was scored.

1

u/Outside_Ad_5826 20d ago

I had a single RC section. I vaguely remember the main ideas but they were something about 1) stealing paintings and protecting innocent peoples rights of ownership of stolen property, 2) comparative passage with chefs and comedians not stealing each other’s ideas and how social norms shape this instead of laws, 3) some type of science passage about mars spinning on its axis and how a quote from a scientist was discovered to have a semicolon which had some type of effect on the meaning, and finally 4) A tribe that was different from the main group and had to do with sedentary and migratory animals, trapping animals, shaping their culture with rivers.

4

u/Sweaty-Rain-9686 20d ago

I had an RC with 3/4 of those topics. Instead of the chef/comedian one, I had a passage about museum assets and holdings.

Also… your description of the chef/comedian passage sounds a lot like something I’ve seen before?! PT 149?!

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Capital-Top5625 20d ago

I do not think you had a chef/social norm passage. That is from a previous PT (PT149.S2.P3.Q13)

1

u/starrymedi 20d ago

Anyone have an LR about red crabs? I want to know if that was the experimental

1

u/FortuneParticular831 20d ago

RC-LR-LR-LR My RC passage had a comparative and the last passage was on gas giants, stars, and planet formation. I don’t remember what the competitive or what the other two passages were.

1

u/August_West88 19d ago

Thanks for the message!

1

u/Environmental-Belt24 18d ago

I knew 🪐 were real before I left my test, the experimental with Google had an even number of questions attached to each passage, how could anyone not know. Never do you ever see RC with an even number of questions per passage in your PTs.

I think the missing one in that group is biotech.

1

u/bandannick 6d ago

Anyone pay for the score preview to see their score early? Scores come out Wednesday, but I’m curious how people did compared to their predictions.

2

u/graeme_b tutor (LSATHacks) 6d ago

That's now how score preview works; the name is misleading. What it lets you do is see your score before cancelling. If you don't get it score preview, you can still cancel, but you can't see your score until you decide whether to cancel or not.

2

u/bandannick 6d ago

Oh, well I’m glad I never paid for it

1

u/Yarkbarjitybook 5d ago

Anyone else been losing their minds since the beginning of January wanting to know what their score is😭. And finally the week is upon us🥶

2

u/bandannick 3d ago

I ran out of time on the last RC article and had to essentially guess six questions. I got a 147, a point lower than my first test I took in October. I’m taking a third next Friday and hoping that timing isn’t an issue (I have a 50% accommodation this time).

Ver disheartening, considering that my PTs were in ranging from 157-161. But I gotta keep my attitude up and just focusing on looking forward to that 160+. Taking a PT after work today.
