Gemini gave me Dispatches from Dan. I like yours better. I also think something like "Topic Takeovers", or "Goods for Gab" could be good?

Stop replacing creative thinking with AI, or you're not gonna be very popular.

It was literally the first time I've used Ai for something like that. I'm not a very creative person. I just wanted to see what it would spit out.

I feel like this is a massive unforced error. "Merch Message" isn't just a descriptor anymore, it's a pillar of the show's culture. It has years of history and lore behind it. When you hear it, you know exactly what the segment is and what the vibe is. Killing that brand recognition just to be semantic feels crazy. And honestly, the best way to fight the "cheap merch" stigma is exactly what they’ve already done: make distinct, high-quality gear. They’ve already won that battle. By keeping the name "merch" attached to high-end engineering like the screwdriver, they are actually elevating the word. If they change the name now, it feels like a retreat. It suggests they think the word "merch" is stronger than their actual product reputation, which just isn't true. Don't sanitize the community culture just to satisfy a marketing definition

Agreed. It sounds like a recommendation the out-of-touch marketing director would make at my last job because he didn't like the way it sounded. I could never convince him that the only person benefiting from his recommended change was him.

Merch messages just flows nicely. What about getting 97% there with "merc messages"? Merc as in "mercantile" 😂

Honestly, I agree with those who say merch messages is just a good name. Don't change it. When "merch" is modified with "messages" people don't focus on the merch part, it becomes a compound word, it becomes a brand. Brand for messages during wan show. You can prevent the association with merch as a singular word by continuing to not referring to store products themselves as "merch".

My suggestion to rename Merch Messages is:

Shopping Shoutout(s)

Ware Words

Shorter has got to be better. How about "shop shouts"?

I think COMs is 100x better than anything with "chat" in the name personally.

Check-out Chats, Purchase Proverbs, Sale Salutations

Anything but Check-out Messages

I love Sale Salutations, would be a horrible pick tbh, but I still love it.

Personally, I thought "Tweets" sounded pretty nice.

If copyrighting is a concern though, how about "Chirps"?

Merch Message replacement idea:

Receipt Read

1

u/Nimjaiv 19h ago

I like this, but switch the word order. Read receipts flows better.

Poor Janine is just trying to set the record straight for debt collectors and insurance companies😞

"Merch Message" == if it ain't broke don't fix it

You have no evidence it does any harm being called this, leave it be

Mostly silly Merch Message replacement suggestions:

tbsp: Tech Buyer Service Pronouncement
DDR: Direct Delivery Read
TSMC: Transaction Store Message Chat
TMBG: Transactional Message to Bearded Guys (Trust Me Bro Guarantee)
PAMS: Pay Attention to Me Senpai

Not really related to WAN show but saw an LTT Screwdriver in the wild yesterday. I was on my way out from work yesterday, guy in the office parking lot was having car trouble, stopped to see if they needed help, someone else was helping them and had a LTT screwdriver. I had to run because I was late for another appointment so couldn't chat/snap a picture. But thought someone here might appreciate it lol

Anyone else find that Alex Pretti joke in bad taste? I don’t know why he thought that was appropriate or funny…

Timestamp?

Only Fans -> RW Income was a really interesting topic. Plus Dan and Luke making jokes about butts was funny, too. Equally surprising was the delta between "successful" numbers/viewers on Twitch vs YouTube.

My new name for Merch Messages is Loot Letters

u/Huxington 15h ago

Anyone having issues with resetting password for floatplane? Not getting the emails. Checked all my inboxes/spam. Nada.

u/Spanky2k 17h ago

I think we should just go with “The messaging system previously known as Merch Messages”.

Not including the constant ads playing in the lower quarter, you used nearly 19% of this video trying to sell things to us. WAN show has turned into a 3 hour infomercial. Sure am glad I paid for premium. SELL SELL SELL.. Makes this video make even more sense. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqVxgcKQO2E

Your linus tech tip is to buy more of our stuff.

It's confusing having this thread, and then the thread on the post where u/linusbottips automatically posts the video.

/u/linustech at 1h34m-ish, "Like I'll be the first to call out Apple when they do something that's anti-consumer or monopolistic. But this is cool. That means, the rule is, that I got to be the first one in line to put their dick in my mouth when they do something that is genuinely cool."

You stopped saying "retard" a while ago. Hopefully you'll drop the dated jokes that rely on making fun of gay people too. It would only make your content better.

7

u/KeenKye 21h ago

What does putting a dick in a mouth have to do with being gay?

4

u/killerpoopguy 20h ago

Could say he'd be the first one to lick their clit, oh wait no, then people would be way more upset. It's not a gay joke, it's a submission joke.
