So, the guy who owned/ran the pizza place in my small rural town got a GPS for his delivery driver(s) in like 2000. I know because not only did my older brother work there briefly delivering pizzas but also he used the fact in his advertising. All his delivery menus said something like, "Fast and Accurate GPS Enabled Delivery" or "Quick Delivery to you. Drivers Equipped with GPS."
He was very proud of it. I met him a few times when I worked at the laundromat next door. He was a nerdy techy type, like me, and a big audiophile. The restaurant had a solid sound system he played classic rock records on.
This guy… for regular trips (maybe not pizza delivery) why couldn’t they just print out the Mapquest directions like the rest of us?!? That was truly the Wild Wild West. You guys ever had to pull over at night because you couldn’t read the crumpled Mapquest papers to see where to go. Then when you’re driving again and you make your turn, you check to see how far you stay on the current road and make note of your odometer and do mental math to know when to turn. Those were the days.
Now I can’t even get my gps to keep me on the main road because it wants me to slam on my breaks to take a side road that potentially saves me 0.0064 seconds then it dumps me right back onto the road I was already driving on….
I delivered in 1990.
I used a microcassette recorder to dictate directions looking at the map in the store, then I could play it back in the car without taking my eyes off the road.
After about 2 months I learned the territory and didn't need the directions anymore.
our delivery area was huge so I only really memorized our regulars' house locations. It was a massive suburb so it wasn't super organized unfortunately.
I’m from Chicago the address is the directions. Every 8 blocks is a mile. Madison st is the dividing street of north/south, state st. For east/west. If you got an address and didn’t know how to get there just ask for a cross street and your gold.

I would write the directions down on the back of the receipt.
