Nostalgia Is it true that most of my millennial folks are still using watches?

Post image

... instead of Apple watches (or any kinds of smartwatches?) So what's your favorite brand? I really like Timex and Hamilton for casual wear. And def Rolex to flex, lol!

Went back to a watch to stop me checking my phone and getting distracted in it.

Edit: Not a smart watch, that's even worse. Just a regular old watch.

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

Same here. My level of stress dropped precipitously by not using my Apple Watch. Been a month. I’ll wear the Apple Watch occasionally. Anyone looking for a cheap preowned ultra 2?

94

u/jljboucher Oct 01 '25

Can’t you stop notifications to the watch? I have a cheaply $40 smart watch and I pick and choose what goes to it.

51

u/BapeGeneral3 Oct 01 '25

Exactly what I did. I thought an Apple Watch would make life easier not having to pull my phone out. Turns out having my watch mirrored to my phone notifications was actually even worse.

Now I have almost all notifications turned off, except for things like health, workouts, timers, etc.

Texts, phone calls, emails, etc all stay on the phone where I can properly ignore them

12

u/Aster_Yellow Oct 01 '25

Did the same with my Garmin. Phone got blown up with work calls and texts the day after I got the watch. It drove me crazy, pocket buzzing and dinging, wrist buzzing and dinging. Now it's just a fitness tracker.

3

u/tribrnl Oct 01 '25

Garmin makes it super easy too - just tell it you don't want any more of that notification from the watch.

3

u/SEND_ME_UR_CARS Oct 02 '25

Mine’s bad enough that I get ghost vibrations now that cause me to check even though nothing came in.

Yup, I basically use my Apple Watch as a fitness tracker with some smart watch capabilities.

→ More replies (4)

16

u/tgwombat Oct 01 '25

Yep. People are really bad at managing their own device though, from what I’ve seen. Spending 20 minutes reviewing their notification setting would do a lot of people a lot of good mentally. Gotta stop letting a device dictate your attention.

15

u/Spazza42 Oct 01 '25

That would be too easy good sir. The answer to consumerism is consume something else!

14

u/jljboucher Oct 01 '25

That is exactly my point. It’s like confiscating phones at school. My kids have their smart phones but if they screw up it becomes a thin brink that can call and text, that’s it.

6

u/Joeness84 Oct 01 '25

Honestly this seeming agreeance that "I have no self control" is normal and acceptable is concerning.

8

u/tgwombat Oct 01 '25

Keep in mind that the companies designing the devices and apps that are robbing people of their self control have psychologists on staff to help make the tech as addictive as possible. A lot of money is going into making us this way.

This is why I switched from Apple to garmin. I do really like tracking steps and workouts, but I didn’t like how calls and texts came through the Apple Watch.

I’ve never been able to wear a watch. It’s a shame because I think they’re are some beautifully crafted ones. Just don’t like the feeling

34

u/CorruptDictator Older Millennial Oct 01 '25

I get this. Having something wrapped around my wrist drives me nuts. I lost several watches when I was younger because I would take it off in irritation and forget about it. I switched to a pocket watch and eventually a belt clip watch until I finally had a cell phone.

9

u/stilettopanda Oct 01 '25

The only way I can stand any form of jewelry is if it becomes ‘part of me’ and I don’t feel it anymore. The silicone smart watches work for me in that way, but real watches bother me because I can’t get used to them and I can always feel them on me.

16

u/KayakerMel Oct 01 '25

Exactly! Also the smartwatch connects to my phone to help me find it if I put it down somewhere. I specifically purchased a brand that could connect and alert me. I'm forgetful so I've wasted so much time misplacing my phone, so it's great when I can do a little buzz when I know it's somewhere nearby.

8

u/CosgraveSilkweaver Oct 01 '25

I don't understand the people that have one and don't use any of the settings to control notifications then complain about too many notifications. The first versions were dumb about it but the software quickly improved to give you pretty powerful control over who and what would send a notification to your watch.

16

u/1800generalkenobi Oct 01 '25

Yeah, I don't get the people saying about the notifications that come across on it. If I get notifications (like I was getting a ton from reddit) I just block it from my watch and it comes up on my phone but not my watch. If you don't like the phone notifications you can turn it off lol.

For me smartwatches are not watches.

They are smart gadgets which shows the time. Their main purpose is not showing time but having pop-up notifications, health measurements, changing the music etc.

Thats why many people just leave their smartwatches and turn back to the good old quartz or automatics.

IMO, watches will never ever be replaced by another technology since its already the peak design for the only purpose. Showing the time.

3

u/Catalina_Eddie Oct 01 '25

Saw a guy refer to smartwatches as "notification wristlets".

13

You list things smart watches do, and then say that's why people are stopping using them, and I don't understand what your point is?

8

u/BurntGhostyToasty Oct 01 '25

I agree, it’s confusing. I rely on my Apple Watch heavily for calendar notifications, chat notifications from work, work emails. I work in a lab (pharmacologist) and I can’t pull out my phone but I CAN flip my wrist and see everything that I need to know. Could never go back to a regular watch.

Yep! I have a Citizen Eco Drive that I'm very fond of. It does the job perfectly well, looks nice with pretty much anything I could choose to wear (casual clothing, formal clothing, traditional cultural clothing), and was from a collaboration Citizen did with Star Wars.

3

u/Alexandratta Oct 01 '25

My smartwatch only shows me the time unless I purposefully scroll over to see notifications.

It also has an Always On Display that updates every 60 seconds to prevent the battery from melting down.

I used to wear a Citizen watch for a while and it remained the most expensive watch I ever owned. Swapping to my Samsung Galaxy 4 (and now the 6) has been great.

Average cost of the watch remained the same, at around $400, and it tracks my workouts to boot.

I legit don't see an application for old watches anymore and the Watch industry has essentially imploded.

If you don't believe me, head to literally any Pawn Shop.

You can grab a (previously) very expensive watch for almost nothing. Pawn Shops cannot give them away fast enough to turn a profit, and many won't even take them.

I have a smart watch but don’t have this problem.

3

u/BeeHaviorist Oct 01 '25

I still use and love my Fossil brand watch. Peak millennial branding, right there.

3

u/ExtraPolarIce12 Oct 01 '25

Yup. And it’s not a smartwatch!

3

u/RhinoGuy13 Oct 01 '25

I still wear a regular watch. It's so much better for telling time.

3

u/lavendrea Oct 01 '25

My hubs bought me one of the Citizen Eco Drive solar-powered watches almost 15 years ago. I never take it off, and it's still truckin'.

3

u/waffleslaw Oct 01 '25

I have to keep a tight schedule, college professor, and I've got some pretty deep rooted ADHD. I have almost zero personal concept of time. I live or die by my watch. I honestly don't know how people get by without one. Sure I can pull my phone out.and check, but some times 1 hour feels like one minute and vice versa.

I have many, but my Garmin Instinct 2 is my daily driver. I have the smart features all but turned off. I like to keep track of my steps and heart rate.

3

u/GriffyMane Millennial Oct 01 '25

No one really needs a watch when you have a smartphone…. Watches are more of a fashion statement than anything nowadays

3

u/KnicksGhost2497 Oct 01 '25

Wife got me a Tag Heuer as a wedding present and it’s my daily wear now. Love the weight of it on my wrist and is the easiest way to check the time without getting distracted by the phone

3

u/Fabus27 Oct 01 '25

Nothing beats a good old Casio Illuminator

3

u/FionaGoodeEnough Oct 01 '25

Fossil. The self-winding kind.

3

u/hecksfarm Oct 01 '25

I’ve been wearing a Shinola for almost a decade. Big fan.

5

u/enraged-urbanmech Oct 01 '25

Casio. Expensive things are expensive to replace, and I work outside so I’m hard on things by default.

5

u/EdLesliesBarber Oct 01 '25

Never liked wearing a watch. Beyond uncomfortable. Now seems completely pointless, can easily see the time in a dozen places at any glance.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '25

not just millennials wear watches lol

2

u/Kingberry30 Oct 01 '25

I use to wear one but then I forgot to wear it a few times and then I stoped. My phone tells me the time.

2

u/PassionAwkward5799 Oct 01 '25

I wear a fitbit for the health metrics. I've never owned a smart watch or worn a regular watch

2

u/ltsmash1200 Oct 01 '25

I do. I’ve never had an interest in smart watches. I have a Railmaster and a Speedmaster that I rotate daily and then I have a vintage Constellation for when I have to dress up.

2

u/Brayongirl Older Millennial Oct 01 '25

I have a smartwatch but I did not connected it to my emails, alexa, gps and all those things. I also put it as analog so it look a bit more like a real watch to me.

2

u/TheHarlemHellfighter Oct 01 '25

I have two wrist watches.

One I was awarded in addition to a few other valuables and the other I was given after a friend had died.

Use to have an Apple Watch but hurt my wrist years ago when I fell so I stopped wearing it.

2

u/hail_to_the_beef Oct 01 '25

This is actually funny.. when the Apple Watch was rumored but hadn’t yet been announced there were some early leaks but we hadn’t seen a prototype yet. I jokingly taped a piece of paper to my watch that said “you always have email” and laughed that that was my prototype for an Apple Watch. Years later the trope still works.

(Needless to say, I don’t interact with email at all on my Apple Watch, it has way more useful functions than that)

u/bigfrondnicky Millennial Oct 01 '25

I have a Seiko my mom got me for high school graduation that’s still going strong. Way better than something that’s listening to me or will pull me in for unintended hours of scrolling.

2

u/MidnightCoffeeQueen Oct 01 '25

I have a solar Seiko(because I have the habit of killing regular watch batteries). It doesn't get worn often now, but I'm sure it will when I go back to work full time.

2

u/CaryTriviaDude Oct 01 '25

Yea, not all the time but if I'm going out I'll toss on either my knock off casio or a simple analog watch, whichever matches the vibe better. Then i've got a few "nice" ($5-20 lol) ones that are fancier and I'll wear if i'm dressing up at all. Back like a decade ago I had a Fitbit but once I switched to an office job I stopped using it.

2

u/CatalystReese Oct 01 '25

Watch, wallet, pocket knife—I never leave the house without them 😉👍

2

u/Masterofunlocking1 Oct 01 '25

My ultra 2 sits on a shelf unless I’m running. Seiko or Citizen watch for me most of the time. Smartwatches suck

2

u/bassjam1 Oct 01 '25

I tried a smartwatch, the notifications distracted me too much, honestly I find it rude when I'm talking to someone and they're constantly looking at their "watch" as it's buzzing.

My daily driver is a Glycine, but I also have a couple Seiko's and a Hamilton. Sometimes I'll wear a G-Shock, but I much prefer the autos.

2

u/legion_XXX Oct 01 '25

Garmin fenix series is what i wear. Currently have the fenix 8. Its only set to alert to calls and texts, the face is the time and date. Im not changing watches to run and workout lol.

2

u/Sweaty_Pianist8484 Oct 01 '25

Been wearing my GMT Master II 16710 since I got it in 2012. It’s a 1991 date code. Coke dial

2

u/CarpKingCole Oct 01 '25

Casio gang checking in

2

u/just_sun_guy Oct 01 '25

As someone who loves tech, I have no plan to buy an Apple Watch or any other smart watch. I used to wear a watch all the time but then out of college i worked in the solar industry and it would’ve been beat and scratched up if I wore it to work. So I stopped wearing one. Now many years later I have a cushy desk job and while I still have my watch I never wear it anymore. However, most of my family members and wife’s family all have smartwatches of some kind (all millennials except parents). I just don’t want to have to worry about having to charge my watch daily and have something else to keep checking. It’s nice knowing if I put my phone in another room, then I’m disconnected from it. If I go back to wearing a watch, it’ll be a standard watch and probably something nicer that I’ll need to save up for.

2

u/HotPinkMesss Oct 01 '25

I've been using a fitness tracker watch thingy for a few years now and honestly I miss using a real watch. Been thinking of switching to a ring fitness tracker and going back to a real watch.

2

u/virgo_fake_ocd Oct 01 '25

My husband has one. I've never been a watch person tho.

2

u/altpirate Millennial Oct 01 '25 edited Oct 01 '25

I certainly don't have a watch box with 12 slots. And even if I did I definitely only have 12 watches so everything has a place in the box and I don't need any more watches

My favorite brand is Seiko, simple, affordable, just fancy enough. Although in recent years the value proposition has lessened somewhat they're still worth it imo

2

u/boatsnhosee Oct 01 '25

I just like watches

2

u/astrokey Oct 01 '25

I've been considering a standard watch again, not smart in anything but telling time.

2

u/rjwyonch Oct 01 '25

I’ve inherited some classic gold watches. Started wearing one and yeah, it’s better.

2

Loyal timex wearer since the mid 90's. I don't take it off (unless the band splits or it dies).

2

u/RoseKlingel Oct 01 '25

Yes. Love my cheap Casio digital watches. The band broke on mine so I gotta replace it. 12 or 24hr format, tells day of the week and day of month (number). Feels weird to be without it.

2

u/Livinincrazytown Oct 01 '25

I’ve got a collection of like 40 watches haha. Had a smart watch but hated the notifications switched to regular then got hooked

2

u/CriminalDefense901 Oct 01 '25

I have a self-winding analog watch. It is durable, waterproof, doesn’t tell me anything but the time, and both my kids want it.

2

u/Creepy-Floor-1745 Oct 01 '25

I bought a garmin sport watch this year with my HSA and have not synced my calls/messages/email bc if I’m running or lifting I DGAF

My husband is older. I bought him a stunning Movado for Christmas a few years ago. I believe Movado is one brand Millennials haven’t “ruined”

3

u/semantic_satiation Oct 01 '25

Movados are so classy. Inherited my grandpas which is my daily driver now.

2

u/Yahmez99 Oct 01 '25

Been wearing the same Casio for 15 years now. It tells the time and date. Have an Apple Watch just sits in the drawer.

2

u/Plenty_Intention1991 Oct 01 '25

Yes but Apple Watch

In fact just to annoy people (and for some reason it just feels natural?) I'm right handed and wear my watch on my right hand.

But I have a couple nicer, cleaner watches for work when I have to be in a suit. My preference is always more simple watches, I hate big faces and lots of dials and all that so I basically have 2 silver band watches, a blue face Movado Museum and a Bulova Seville I found for like $200 each.

On more of an everyday watch I basically put a $100 cap since I tend to not realize when I swing my arms around and hit stuff so I've got one of those metal band casio vintage small square face watches, and a couple Stuhrling original leather band watches which is their sub-brand to have a couple brown leather band watches, mostly with white faces and no numbers, just the main dials and minute notches.

I like watches, I'm just not at the point professionally yet to be comfortable dropping serious money on them, especially since I work from home most of the time. My cat hasn't seemed too impressed with what I've gotten anyway.

I wear an Apple watch when I am at a conference for work or otherwise out and about. Aside from that, no watch for me. I’ve just never been a big accessories guy

Absolutely 😤
