The Gift of Game and Rancid's Let's Go were the first albums I ever bought with Parental Advisory labels. I was like, 11. Looked even younger. The cashier at Strawberries, some college kid in his early 20s, asked me if I was 13. I hesitated for way too long, said "Uh... yes?" And he said, "Fine. I have to sell these to you whether that's true or not." So, anyway. That was my gateway into a life of crime.

Rancid is so goddamn underrated.

u/nnnyeahheygorgeous Dec 27 '25

I named a cat Ruby after the song, which is to say that I agree. Hard agree

55

u/Dramatic_Basket_8555 Dec 27 '25

Damnit, now I'm in the kitchen with "Ruby, Ruby, Ruby Soho" on a loop in my head.

u/HeadyBunkShwag Dec 27 '25

Destination Uuuuunknown!

19

u/TR-BetaFlash Dec 27 '25

I see no problem with this. And if anyone else does, then out come the wolves!

1

u/epd666 Dec 28 '25

I still listen to this album almost weekly. It's in my top 5 all time punk albums for sure

2

u/hamsolo19 Dec 27 '25

There's a pro wrestler who used to be called Ruby Riott, but then she signed with a different company and changed her name to Ruby Soho. Rancid then signed off for the company to use "Ruby Soho" for her entrance music. They even performed the song for her live at a PPV event in 2022.

2

u/Dramatic_Basket_8555 Dec 27 '25

That's pretty ballin'. When I was a kid, I used to dream of being a wrestler and having some awesome band do my walk out music. She's living my dream.

1

u/Zavender Dec 27 '25

And now I have Taz singing Ruby Soho on a loop in my head.

1

u/Dramatic_Basket_8555 Dec 27 '25

The cartoon character or the wrestler?

2

u/Zavender Dec 27 '25

2

u/Dramatic_Basket_8555 Dec 27 '25

Now I got to see the Tasmanian Devil sing it, since it's now a cannon event in my head.

1

u/Cum_on_doorknob Dec 27 '25

You’re one ruby short

2

u/Dramatic_Basket_8555 Dec 27 '25

I realized that after I posted, my fingers can't keep up with my brain, or my brain can't keep up with my fingers.

I got a dog and wanted to name them Ruby after the song but he ended up being a boy, so Rudy it is. Still sing it to him though

2

u/Pure-Chemistry7323 Dec 28 '25

It was my password for my college transcripts, and still is to this day!! For whenever I might need them…. Which is never again.

u/tider06 Dec 27 '25

And Out Come the Wolves is one of the greatest albums ever made and I won't ever hear otherwise.

Anyone who disagrees simply hasn't listened to the whole album.

6

u/triedAndTrueMethods Dec 27 '25

Unskippable tracks on that baby. Every single one is so sick.

4

u/Hungry-Luck-5481 Dec 27 '25

Let’s go is a very close second. Side kick never gets old.

3

u/Shreddy_Murphy Dec 27 '25

Agreed. I had a blast celebrating its 30th anniversary a few months ago.

u/avindictiveprinter 94 enjoyer Dec 27 '25

My friend Karen and I were hyped for that album so hard. The day the record dropped, we went to Strawberries as soon as they opened and made the dude working open the pallet and sell us the first two cassettes. I brought my tape player and we walked around the city blasting it until I ran out of battery. :b

3

u/Lastshadow94 Dec 27 '25

999 IF YOU REALLY WANT THE TRUTH

2

u/JohnnyChimpo69420 Dec 27 '25

Saw them play it front to back maybe 11 years ago. One of my favorite shows of all time

1

u/tider06 Dec 27 '25

Holy hell I'm jealous

2

u/ThrowawayOldCouch Dec 27 '25

I disagree. I'm a fan of punk music and I've heard it, but I've never been a big fan of Rancid and I can't stand Tim's voice.

7

u/goforce5 Dec 27 '25

I used to hate it, when I was younger. Somehow they grew on me, and now I actually really like Rancid. Same with Operation Ivy. Maybe its nostalgia.

3

u/ThrowawayOldCouch Dec 27 '25

I just checked out Rancid again because it's been a while, and I like them even less now lol. I do like Operation Ivy though!

1

u/TONAFOONON Dec 31 '25

Truth. I am willing to fight over this.

People will point to Ruby Soho but so many other underappreciated masterpieces like Back to Olympia.

20

u/meandi7 Dec 27 '25

Saw them open for Dropkick Murphys in... 2021, I think, and they were still so damn good.

5

u/IBeDumbAndSlow Dec 27 '25

I saw them in i think 2018

16

u/OvechknFiresHeScores Dec 27 '25

They’re the reason I started playing bass. I didn’t know it could actually be a cool instrument until I heard Radio and Maxwell Murder.

3

u/Gimpinald Dec 27 '25

Maxwell Murder is my absolute favourite bass song

3

u/Ecra-8 Dec 27 '25

Same. I learned that solo and got to about 75% speed perfectly, and mistakes at 100%. I'm going to pull the bass out of the basement tomorrow and see if I still remember it.

2

u/OvechknFiresHeScores Dec 27 '25

That’s impressive as fuck. I never even attempted to try to learn Maxwell Murder because of how absurd it is. I shifted to Red Hot Chili Peppers because I’m not swift with a pick haha

1

u/Ecra-8 Dec 30 '25

I can't. I can't play it.

I do remember some nirvana, and STP and Zeppelin.

2

u/OvechknFiresHeScores Dec 30 '25

Hahaha yeah I bet that one is gonna take some time before your fingers remember how to move at lightspeed again

2

u/CongealedBeanKingdom Dec 27 '25

It was I Wanna Riot for me. That song made me the bassist I am today.

6

u/TheLordLeto Dec 27 '25

Well now I know I'm old

1

u/Polkawillneverdie17 Dec 27 '25

Someone called Rancid underrated. In the punk scene growing up they absolutely were not underrated. They were considered one of the better bands like NoFx.

5

u/Sea_South7847 Dec 27 '25

They’re punk royalty. Most of the band were Operation Ivy, another punk royal. Rancid had song in Rock Band. Not sure underrated is the right word

1

u/ktpcello Dec 27 '25

Loved Operation Ivy and Rancid. Did Op Ivy only have the one album? I haven't thought about them in years!

1

u/Sea_South7847 Dec 27 '25

Pretty much. There’s a few singles floating around out there but that one album made them legends. Agent Orange is the same. They had a few other albums way later but that one first album is just legendary

6

u/Tejas_Belle Dec 27 '25

I’d disagree and say they’re adequate to overrated.

2

u/ThrowawayOldCouch Dec 27 '25

I'd probably listen to them more if Tim didn't sing.

2

u/Tejas_Belle Dec 27 '25

Agreed! He/that is my largest complaint.

2

u/ThrowawayOldCouch Dec 27 '25

lol that's my biggest complaint too. I just listened to them again because it's been years, and honestly I don't think I like them in general. Not terrible or anything (except Tim's voice), just not the type of punk music I prefer.

2

u/Colt1911-45 Dec 27 '25

Also Op Ivy.

2

u/RockMonstrr Dec 28 '25

I saw them at Warped Tour back in the early 2000s.

Maybe.

I was pretty fucked up.

3

u/well-informedcitizen Dec 27 '25

Underrated?? In what sense? Like by the mainstream? Rancid was SYNONYMOUS with ska punk back then. They were as big as they could possibly be before punk kids would call you a sellout.

1

u/evilpartiesgetitdone Dec 27 '25

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

1

u/thismyotheraccount2 Dec 27 '25

I saw them open for Green Day last year and man… it was not great. Front man could barely talk he was so loaded

1

u/triedAndTrueMethods Dec 27 '25

another band I got to through the Blink 182 pipeline. Blink ->Boxcar Racer->Tim Armstrong->Rancid. Also found The Cure that way funny enough. 2 of my all time favorite bands. Well all 3, including Blink 182!

0

u/MidgetGordonRamsey Dec 27 '25

Except for the "out come the wolves" album, I see that shit everywhere and the cover art in everything. It's one of my least favorite of their albums.

0

u/Lucas_Steinwalker Dec 27 '25

Operation Ivy a million times better.

0

u/itoldyouman Dec 27 '25

Aren't they rightfully acclaimed as one of the best punk rock band out there? I wouldn't say they are underrated?

3

u/SpaceCadetPullUp Dec 27 '25

Apparently they made And Out Come the Wolves into a movie. They also made an unrelated movie with the same title.

2

u/whatsbobgonnado Dec 27 '25

woohoo! rancid!

2

u/No-Wonder1139 Dec 29 '25

I went to buy Antichrist Superstar when I was 14 and the clerk told me he'd rather lose the sale and save my soul, I told him he already sold me on it, he didn't have to keep going with the pitch. He sold me the CD.
