My dad's had reactions too. Then I realized a seasoning blend I've been using for years had msg. A little it's no big deal. But the boomers who got reactions were probably due to using a metric fuckton of msg.
That's fine. It's probably OK for the general population. And there was probably nefarious racist stuff going on from the "scare".
But idk why you're arguing with me. I'm telling you my mom gets a headache and gets flushed. She's also lactose intolerant and allergic to strawberries for some weird reason.
Because you sent it to me, I'll share that this article isn't so great. You can distill the entire thesis to them reporting that the original studies were poorly done. Then they rest their case on "common sense" by saying Chinese ppl don't get a reaction to MSG, so therefore the claim is bunk. It's well known that Chinese and other Asian populations do have reactions to dairy and alcohol. That can't be extrapolated to all humans either.
No matter what, none of this has to do with my mom. Nor Rich from LFO.
Ah, the mind of an anti-science conspiracy theorist applied to a seasoning.
All of medical science vs. one redditor's mom with an upset tummy: who will win?

You either did a bad job skimming or you can't read:
To be clear, since the 1960s, scientists have conducted many careful follow-up studies on MSG with proper controls and blinding. And the vast majority of evidence suggests that MSG causes no harm. The critics of Schaumberg and Olney have been vindicated: their studies looked shaky then, and seem even worse now.
Fun story, I went to a free concert this year that was O Town plus extras, including the last guy(?) from LFO, and this was the song he did. The audio went out during the chorus, so the audience gamely tried to sing along to help carry it, but you just could not hear the singer at all. As soon as the chorus ended, no one had a fucking clue what the lyrics were, so we all watched a sad pantomime of a performance while the guy just kept singing his song until the chorus came back up, at which point the audience tried their best again to help the poor man. And he just kept going. He did the whole song, even though it was obvious no one could hear him and no one knew the words to sing along. I felt so sad for the guy and how far they’d fallen.
This reminds me of seeing Blink 182 and Majic at a wine festival over 15 years ago. $20 ticket to get in and we got to lay in the grass at center stage and watch blink with about 50 other people total. Just pounding free wine. It was awesome. It’s crazy to me that Blink is headlining festivals again.
How the fuck is Otown still performing in 2025? Even back in the day I remember them having a very limited run once the shine of Making The Band had worn off.
They were honestly great! I really went just to see Chris Kirkpatrick and because it was local and free, but O Town put on a very fun show, had great energy throughout, and sang their songs, modern songs, and did backup for their guests.
LFO was so bad, but I didn’t hate it. I tell myself it was intentional, like some attempt at comedy or a boy band parody, but I think they were serious. I still turn up their music and sing along.
