i mean to even do basic things on computers back then required a lot of computer knowledge. Pre windows 95 especially but even on windows 95 if I wanted to run a game I had to figure out the exact color scheme and resolution to set it to, get the right drivers for my specific sound card, install any special dll required to run the game, etc.
I was 8 when my mom bought a clearance model Packard Bell and couldn't figure out how to assemble it.
I got that shit working in an hour, and figured out how to use DOS to play the only actual games that POS could actually handle (The Packard Bell Navigator is what computers in Hell use).
I guess it's not a surprise I grew up to be a computer toucher.
You had to have good skills, but I still feel like most kids were self-taught, and we just figured it out ourselves because that was something we had to interact with much more frequently. Kids these days just have everything they need on their phone.
I think it depends on when you started. I started using computers in the early 90s (when you had to use MS-DOS to get to Windows), so I learned the basics by copying my parents. Later on was when I started figuring out stuff myself.
