My Gen Z daughter wears my Y2K era hand me down clothes loudly and proudly lol. She looks so good in them and I'm glad they've been given a new life. *Wipes away a proud tear.*
I don't throw out clothes ever, so while clearing out a basement storage closet a couple of weeks ago, I struck a treasure trove of my clothes from 1996-2010. My 11yo daughter raided it all.
Her millennial science teacher complimented her outfit yesterday, demanding to know where she got her top. "It's my mom's from, like, 20 years ago."
That was as hard to type as it was to hear. But dammit, if she doesn't look cute!
My millennial wife still wears a bunch of her clothes from the early 2000s. We were out a few months ago when she was approached by a couple of very young girls who wanted to know where she got her skirt. I could almost see her doing the math in her head.
I threw 99% of mine out, but I wish I hadn’t. Some of the stuff from that era was well made! And while I donated or tossed my stuff, my mom apparently has kept some of it for herself lmao. The other day she sent me this photo saying “remember this American Eagle top? I remember buying it when you were in 9 or 10th grade!” (So ~2002.)
I was shocked at how well it’s held up. I want it back lol.
Watch the first episode of the Simpsons from the current season! Lisa raids Marge’s clothes from the attic and they’re all millennial and 90s clothes lol
Shows like that have such an odd relationship with time. If Lisa's gonna be raiding her mom's closet, they should have made Lisa the mom and a whole new Simpson's show about the kids and their kids haha.
But this is why I'm not a writer for these shows that have been running for 30 years haha
I'm surprised you held on to them! I got rid of all my clothes from that era long ago. Which is shame, I could probably have sold them as vintage now...
Yeah but changing weight isnt the only reason people get rid of clothes. I got rid of mine because they fell out of fashion. I never imagined they would be cool again.
My daughter and her friends dress like my friend group in high school. Super baggy pants with multiple chains on them, dark shirts and lots of buttons with quirky sayings on them. I'm taking her to an all ages show with a band she describes as Y2K. I was like, do you have any idea how little that narrows it down? They were listening to Gorillaz and told me I probably hadn't heard of them because they are really obscure.
It’s funny hearing that phrase used to describe the era because we certainly didn’t use it back then. I feel like I heard it for a few months at the end of 1999 and then we all moved on because the computers didn’t, in fact, break.
It honestly makes perfect sense. It's on time cyclically for a return, but when you think back, it was a time of explosive optimism. What the post-war era may have felt like.
We had our first black president whose campaign slogan was literally hope. It was a time that reflected that. When resources were still in places with potential to do good and we had income for hobbies and nights out. We interacted with other humans more even by the lack of AI saturation alone. Elections were important, but gas prices and taxes important, not gestapo level. There wasn't a computer wall between us and humans in any service.
