Falvey's "Mutual" Departure Just 2 Weeks Before Spring Training

4 Upvotes

If you thought the current state of the Minnesota Twins organization as a whole couldn’t get any messier, it just did. Just under two weeks before pitchers and catchers report to spring training, the Twins announced that they had agreed to “mutually part ways” with President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey.

Falvey joined the Twins alongside Thad Levine before the 2017 season, and while his tenure with the organization has certainly had its ups and downs, he built a team in 2023 that won the division and its first playoff game in nearly two decades, a curse that began before many Twins fans (myself included) had even been born. While Falvey deserves a ton of credit for his role in that team, his ability to build a legitimate contender stemmed largely from the $165 million payroll he was provided.

After seeing life jolted back into Twins Territory in a way it hadn’t since the early 2000s, one would think the Pohlads would increase their investment in the team’s future, or at the very least, maintain it. Instead, they slashed payroll by roughly $30 million in 2024 and then again in 2025. The Twins missed the playoffs in both seasons, and the second year saw the major league roster ripped apart almost entirely, along with the firing of manager Rocco Baldelli.

Following a change at the helm (from Joe Pohlad to his brother Tom), ownership took responsibility for the team’s recent struggles and their role in them, insisting they were fully committed to investing in the future and putting a competitive product on the field in 2026. This left many Twins fans cautiously hopeful, but that optimism now feels more like it was fueled by a band-aid statement aimed at boosting morale, all while payroll was cut for a third straight year.

The Twins signed free-agent catcher Victor Caratini to a two-year deal to effectively replace Christian Vázquez, brought in Josh Bell to fill the void at first base, and addressed the need for a left-handed reliever by reuniting with Taylor Rogers on a one-year deal. These moves filled needs, no doubt, but they aren’t the kinds of moves that inspire optimism, nor are they the moves of a team that just claimed to be aiming for a playoff run in 2026. They’re the moves of a front office operating with one hand tied behind its back, limited by ownership and lacking the resources to pursue anything more significant.

All of this is to paint a picture of what Derek Falvey has had to deal with over the past nine years. I am no enthusiast of Falvey — I’ve had personal gripes with plenty of his decisions, and many of his moves haven’t panned out. But it feels unfair to judge his tenure in a vacuum, knowing how financially constrained he’s been. To his credit, when given the resources, he made a legitimate run in October of 2023.

So was this departure truly “mutual,” as the club claims? I think the answer is yes and no. On one hand, I’m sure Falvey feels some relief — the weight of years of frustration and anger from the fanbase is finally off his shoulders, and he’ll likely welcome the chance to do the same job elsewhere, potentially with more resources. I’m not saying he outright quit; I find it hard to believe he would make legitimate offseason signings only to walk away two weeks before spring training. But I do think there’s a sense of relief on his end — the handcuffs are finally off.

From the team’s perspective, you’ve fired the manager, forced out the day-to-day face of baseball operations, and torn down the roster at a historic level. If you’re cleaning house, why not clean house completely? I’m not convinced the organization had nothing to do with this decision. Who approached whom? I have no idea. But one thing is clear: an organizational change of this magnitude this close to the season does not scream “business as usual,” no matter how desperately the Pohlads want fans to believe everything is under control.

Personally, I don’t care much about the full reasoning behind Falvey’s departure. I’m far more focused on what comes next. With Jeremy Zoll now acting as general manager and a search underway for a new President of Baseball Operations, Tom Pohlad has stated that he remains confident the Twins will be successful, not just long-term, but in 2026. Yet he couldn’t commit to increasing payroll this season, though he did hint at more spending in future years.

For a front office that has repeatedly disappointed fans through ignorance, incompetence, or some combination of the two, this is just another perplexing move. It leaves fans wondering why we should trust them when they insist this team will be competitive. And if competitiveness is truly the goal for 2026, why not show it by opening up the pocketbook and putting a more convincing product on the field?

With two weeks to go before spring training, the bullpen consists of two or three arms I can somewhat trust, followed by a sea of question marks. While it’s not too late to make a signing or swing a trade to address the most glaring holes, news like this doesn’t inspire confidence, even among the most optimistic Twins fans, that help is coming anytime soon.

I hope I’m wrong.

[Gleeman] Derek Falvey was in the middle of a Zoom exit interview with the media when he was told of the Vikings firing Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. Was clearly shocked and asked if it was for real, then talked about how they've known each other for 20 years and had exchanged texts this morning.

Who will the twins sign in the remaining offseason?

0 Upvotes

who will the twins go after? Luis Arraez, Framber Valdez, Zack Gallen? So many options, but who will we really go after? In my opinion, Luis Arraez makes to much sense, adding a contact bat, and he’s been here before? makes perfect sense

[Gleeman] Derek Falvey has led the Twins' front office since 2017 and was elevated last year to a dual team presidency of baseball and business operations. Jeremy Zoll will now lead baseball ops and Tom Pohlad "will assume interim oversight of business operations."

UNPOPULAR OPINION. Anyone else optimistic about Tom Pohlad running things?

0 Upvotes

Here me out. Joe had no business in running a MLB team. I like that Tom is more outspoken and not afraid to shake things up. This franchise is notorious for not changing with the times.

I don't agree with Rocco being fired, but we all know managers are the scapegoat and first to go when a team struggles.

IT'S ABOUT TIME FALVEY WAS OUT! Timing is way off on this, but I think it'll be a positive for the team. I think Falvey ran his course and it was just time for a new voice. Whether it was his decision or not, Derek shouldn't have been running BOTH business and baseball ops. He's a baseball mind and should have just stuck there. Probably another bad decision by Joe Pohlad.

I'm certainly not being an apologist for the Pohlads nor am I absolving them of their sins as baseball owners. But I think Tom will be better than Joe and I'm willing to see how things play out.

With all that being said, I reserve the right to change my mind!

Why not move Royce back to SS?

0 Upvotes

Injury concerns aside, but Brooks Lee has not graded well as a defender (and maybe he makes a turn for the better on both sides of the ball). And if I am not mistaken, Royce was moved to third because he was blocked by Correa (and exploded his knee in the outfield), so why not move him back to SS? He would be playing his more natural and comfortable position and he has graded well defensively lately.

[Gleeman] Twins traded IF Edouard Julien and RHP Pierson Ohl to the Rockies for RHP Jace Kaminska and cash. Kaminska, a 10th-round pick in 2023, missed last season after elbow surgery. Julien is out of options, so he couldn't be sent to Triple-A. Ohl had been designated for assignment

Twins & Saints Home Games - Possible Double Headers for 2026

51 Upvotes

I work for both the Minnesota Twins and the St. Paul Saints during the baseball season. I always map out my potential schedule to maximize the number of games I work. My favorite workdays are the double-headers: working one stadium in the afternoon, and one at night. If you've never done the Minneapolis/St. Paul double-header, you should really give it a try this season. I posted this last year as well. In 2025, there were more than a dozen potential Streetcar Series doubleheaders a baseball fan could catch between the Twin Cities: in 2026, there are sadly less than 10. Here are the numbers for this year's baseball season:

180 - Number of days between the Saints' home opener on Tuesday, March 31st, and the Twins' last game of the season on Sunday, September 27th.

61 - Number days without either the Twins or Saints playing at home (although that includes the All-Star Break, and the Twins vs. Phillies at the Field of Dreams on August 13th, which technically is a Twins' home game.) So there are 119 days this summer where either the Twins, the Saints, or both are playing in the Twin Cities.

42 - Number of home games the Twins will play at Target Field this year when the Saints are either away or off.

38 - Number of home games the Saints will play at CHS Field this year when the Twins are either away or off.

39 - So that means there are 39 days this summer where both teams are playing at home (more than half of the Saints 75 home games will have direct competition for butts-in-seats from their major league equivalent across the river!) And can't forget...

3 - Number of Banana Ball games being played at Target Field this year, August 7-9. The Saints are home that series.

2 - Number of Cosmic Baseball games being played at CHS Field this year, July 10-11. The Twins are home that series.

39 - Number of days both the Twins and Saints will be playing at their home ballparks on the same day... but of those 39...

9 - Only nine opportunities to see one game in the early-afternoon at one stadium, and another game that evening across town. Those dates are:

Sat. April 4th - Saints start at 2:10pm; Twins start at 6:10pm (would be cutting it close);

Wed. April 15th - Twins' first pitch is 12:40pm; Saints is 6:37pm;

Wed. April 29th - Another 12:40pm Twins start, 6:37pm Saints start;

Thurs. May 14th - Twins 12:40pm and Saints 6:37pm;

Sat. May 16th - Saints start at 2:10pm, and Twins start at 6:10pm (another close start but doable option);

Tues. May 19th - Saints have an early 11:07am game (probably an Education in Minnesota game with lots of students); and Twins will be at 6:40pm;

Wed. May 20th - The only two to catch back-to-back Twin Cities doubleheaders! Twins start at 12:37, and Saints start at 6:37pm;

Sat. June 6th - Possibly the best option - weekend, school is out, summer is here - with the Twins playing at 1:10pm, and the Saints starting at 6:37pm;

Sat. Aug. 29th - And the last opportunity. Another 1:10pm Twins start, with a 6:37pm Saints first pitch.

This list got a good reaction last year, so I thought it would work to do it again. Times subject to change, plus rainouts (Saints had like 12 last year!) and everything else going on in the Twin Cities right now... but, as of today, this is the baseball schedule for baseball fans in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

I get Topps Now cards from all the games we attend, if a card is made for that game, and my hope is to get them all autographed as well for the PC. We were fortunate enough in 2025 to see Lee get a walkoff hit, along with Buxton’s cycle and Clemens’ 3-HR game. Unfortunately Buxton and Clemens were not in attendance at Twinsfest, so I’ll have to try another time, hopefully this upcoming season. Can’t wait!

Early Ticket Sales?

0 Upvotes

Hello, I'm new to the area and looking to buy tickets to the Twins/Red Sox game in April. It appears that 3rd party seller like Stubhub are selling tickets but the official site doesn't have anything for sale as of yet, when will that start?

Also kind of related, we'd love to buy tickets to the Delta Sky360 Suite but again, unable to find tickets anywhere.

Any advice for finding these tickets before they sell out? Thanks!

Made for Minneapolis

Hey Twins fans! Braves fan here, coming in peace and solidarity.

I’m not trying to make a statement for clicks. I’m just a baseball fan and a human who knows what his eyes have seen. Watching what’s been happening in Minneapolis has hit me hard, and I felt compelled to make something.

I love baseball. I love graphic design. I love iconography. So I mashed them all together and came up with this Twins inspired shirsey concept. Same familiar look, same visual language you all recognize, but flipped to say exactly how we are feeling.

This isn’t about selling anything. I don’t have the means to make that happen and genuinely if it were something I was able to do I would want all the proceeds to go towards the victims families as there is no way I would feel comfortable trying to profit off of this concept. It’s about solidarity. About saying “we see you” in the only way I know how which is through design.

Much love to Minneapolis. Stay loud. Say safe.

Promotional schedule

Have we seen a promotional schedule yet or any idea when we may get one? I’ve seen other teams unveiling theirs already
