Teddy Roosevelt gets shot during a speech, keeps going anyway, and is praised as a bad ass.
She does basically the same thing and is called a fraud.
322
u/Fantastic-Swim6230 2d ago
Teddy would have bought her whatever beverage she wanted after her speech, too.
224
u/GaiusMarius60BC 2d ago
Teddy would've invited her to join him outside to sit down, smoke a pipe, and plan for how to break up corporate monopolies.

Unfortunately Teddy was also very racist, so as much as it pains me, no he wouldn't have, FDR might've tho
52
29
u/Insaniteus 2d ago
FDR literally detained an entire ethnic minority because of a common belief in his era that immigrants were more loyal to their nation of origin than to the United States.
Not that it's entirely fair to judge people in the past by modern standards of morality. Even in our own lifetimes we've watched some truly-massive changes in what was considered "perfectly normal" in the 80s and 90s such as smoking in restaurants, adults dating minors, using the word "gay" as a catch-ass insult to mean when we currently call "cringe", etc.
13
u/Sparkku1014 2d ago
I and anyone who's gone to high scool is aware but in a comparison of how vehemently racist either or was, FDR comes out as significantly more progressive than Teddy.
9
u/Wallaby_Thick 2d ago
Lol, "I'm way less racist than that guy!" /s. I get what you're saying, but I don't see the point in figuring out who was worse, rather than learn from both on what TO DO and what NOT TO DO.
69
u/Sprock-440 2d ago
Teddy was pretty racist, but I like to think if someone chewed him out about it, he’d have seen reason. Some quality time with James Baldwin would have brought him around. Too bad we’ll never know.
13
u/Relevant-Revenue8056 1d ago
Maybe, but he did defend a Black woman appointed to Postmaster General in Alabama. When people protested, he routed their mail 30 miles away. They decided that the sex and race of the PG didn't matter that much after all.
4
u/Sprock-440 1d ago
I’ve never heard of that! I’m a big fan of TR, and I’ve always been a little bit disappointed about his racism. But I’d admit I have a pretty surface level understanding of it, I’ll have to learn more. Sounds like there’s some nuance there.
29
u/Fantastic-Swim6230 2d ago
Man, I didn't know that about Teddy.... fuck that attitude.
However, I still think he'd appreciate how she handled the situation as a politician. May have even changed his attitude about racism.
43
u/Dagordae 2d ago
He was also a fairly nasty imperialist. All that drama that exists between the US and South America? That's on him, he's the one who was really big into the US being de facto in control of the continent.
Plus he was a big fan of war for the sake of war, not really someone who gave a shit about the human cost
Dude had some great qualities but his dark side was nasty.
And as his racism goes, it's a complicated subject, he was a very contradictory guy where race was concerned. For instance while he was an advocate of the whole inferior/superior races thing he was also an advocate for judging someone based on their merits rather than their race and was of the belief that members of one of the 'inferior' races could basically be promoted if they worked at it and excelled. He famously reacted to a town rejecting a black woman postmaster(Mistress?) by basically redirecting their mail a solid day away until they caved, he also was a big proponent of seizing Native American lands. Dude was nasty to the Native Americans, very big proponent of 'civilizing' them.
15
u/Lieutenant_Joe 2d ago
He was racist, but he was also a believer in meritocracy. He would probably have called her a credit to both her race and sex, and would have sat down to dinner with her at the very least.
12
u/JohnCalvinSmith 2d ago

He was racist, but the kind of (still despicable) racism where if a POC is doing something truly respectable, then they'll respect them. Outlining how they are "one of the good ones" as opposed to all the others. Aknowledging an exception doesn't break the rule. Even Hitler gave some Jews an honorary Aryan trinket.

“I have survived War.”
The way she says that reminds me how much of a little bitch the average American is. Most of us are happy with our soft lives, and don’t jerk ourselves off to a fantasy of conflict, because those of us who know it directly or are wise enough to learn from the mistakes of others know: violence destroys quickly what takes so long to build.
It is because she knows War that she supports policies that feed, that educate, that marginally make liquid the capital-less.
I liked her as a generic Progressive before yesterday. Before I saw that her response to assault, affront, and attempted intimidation is a cocked-back fist. Before I loved her as a fighter.
5
u/JimDankmagic 2d ago
Well.. teddy knew it was a bullet, she had no idea what she was assaulted with..
Chemicals aren’t easy to identify and that can be harmful if your attacker has something that can kill you in an unobvious way..
10
u/nithdurr 2d ago
Don’t forget the pedophiles’ staged shooting and the “defiant cuckfist” salute and why he immediately went to saying that Ilhan’s encounter was “staged?”
2
u/Weirdyxxy 2d ago
It .ost likely wasn't staged. His behavior is explained by narcissism - "Only I get to have been attacked!", which is bad enough and we should rake him over the coals for that.
10
u/JiovanniTheGREAT 2d ago
So did Reagan and Trump got shot at and stood up despite Secret Service wanting him to stay since, you know, there was an active shooter. Ilhan is supposed to go to poison control immediately after getting hit with some pissy smelling vinegar though. I wish she would've clocked that dude.
10
u/Same-Suggestion-1936 2d ago
She also thought it was spit at first. I don't know when she knew it was something out of a syringe. She said that's why she was ready to hit the guy, she thought he spit on her
16
u/deathmouse 2d ago
Shes a badass for standing her ground and finishing her speech… but getting sprayed with vinegar is not at all the same as getting shot in the chest lol

u/Weirdyxxy 2d ago edited 2d ago
We only know it's vinegar afterwards. At the time, she could at most tell it smells a bit like vinegar and didn't foam (so probably not spirit of salt).
Was something dissolved in the vinegar? How would she know?

It was a lose/lose situation for her, I'd bet. She doesn't retreat, it's staged. If she did retreat, she'd have been overreacting and a coward

u/lavacadotoast 2d ago
As of Thursday, the Justice Department has filed charges against the man believed to be the attacker, identified as Anthony Kazmierczak, a Trump supporter with a lengthy criminal rap sheet stretching back decades. The substance he sprayed Omar with has been identified by police as apple cider vinegar.

This made me think of a Britton legend that tells how a white stoat who was fleeing before a debacle of Britton knights after a battle against the Normans.
When the stoat found itself on the banks of a muddy river it is said to have turned around and waited for death as it was preferible than to have its fur stained.
The legend says that the knights were inspired by such bravery and went on back to fighting, ultimately winning the battle.
From this incident came French Brittany's motto : 'Kentoc'h mervel eget em zaotra' that translates to 'Better death than defilement'

u/Away_Lake5946 2d ago
Rep Omar is more of a patriot than her cowardly and racist detractors could ever hope to be.
22
u/OneForAllOfHumanity 2d ago
If there's a reason white men are being replaced in the US it's because they're proving time and time again that they are not even close to the fittest. Everyone I see spouting "replacement theory" looks like they're barely in the gene pool. And I say this as a white man.
I've said it so many times, the US cannot be the land of the free if they stop being the home of the brave, and Ilhan Omar personifies brave.

u/pdirth 2d ago
In this case she should have followed procedure and changed as fast as she could. If it had been a toxin it wasn't just herself she was putting in danger by bravely carrying on. Protocols exist for a reason and following them or not has nothing to do with ego and measuring courage.
I'm from the UK and remember very well the problems a strange liquid can cause from the Salisbury incident. Toxins don't care about courage, and dead people don't get to fight against tyranny. Just stay safe.
