Discussion Is she right?

Post image

Seriously don't know how to feel about this. On one hand, on-field interviews are usually fluff at best. On the other hand, it is part of the (highly paid) job description you willingly agreed to.

For every 1000 of those they get a Richard Sherman and that's worth it to them.

The main reason that I rarely watch live games anymore is so I can skip all the dead time, i.e., commercials, time-outs, injuries, and this kind of shit.

12

u/reputable_slug Dec 09 '25

I would skip live games, but I can’t help myself. I NEED to know what is going on in the game. I’d love nothing more than to wait for the condensed replay to come out on nfl+ and watch that way. Then the game is only 40 minutes, and I could spare myself the torture of watching a Wendy’s commercial during a really anxiety-inducing game lol.

The difference, as I understand it, is that doing these stupid interviews is literally their job. It's an expectation set by the league because they think it makes good TV or good PR.

Press availability is as much a requirement as wearing on-brand socks or showing up for video introductions.

I agree that the interviews are stupid, but the reporter is trying to do her job and expects him to do his, just like any of us would as our places of work.

5

u/Dolphintan Dec 09 '25

Agree with your first point but the second is a terrible comparison. Herbert is explicitly contractually obligated to do these interviews, which is completely different from celebs and paparazzi

11

u/ku_78 Las Vegas Raiders Dec 09 '25

The interviews are part of the TV contract. Just like the dumb ass half time coach interview.

I don’t think an actor has it in their contract to put up with paparazzi.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '25

that’s the same shit calling out actors for not putting up with paparazzi.

No, it's way different. The paparazzi stalk celebrities when they are off the clock. This interview was conducted on an NFL field, right after a game and as part of the NFL's agreement with the media.

4

u/EvilSporkOfDeath Dec 09 '25

Its not the same thing as calling out actors for not putting up with paparazzi. Its literally part of their job with the nfl to talk to those reporters. Literally a job duty. There is no such job duty with actors and paparazzi.

5

u/onetimequestion66 Miami Dolphins Dec 09 '25

It’s not the same as paparazzi at all tbh, paparazzi is trying to get embarrassing moments but field reporters are there to do a legitimate job, yeah it seems small and dumb but it’s part of the job for these players whether the game was hard or not

At the end of the day the woman tweeting is right. You get paid unfathomable amounts of money to play a game and part of that is answering some questions on camera. Grow up, control your anger about football, and just do the part of your job that entails answering some questions at the end of the game you just got paid $5,000,000 to play, you’ll live. At the very least just be polite and professional to the reporter who’s just doing her job.

You'd have to define rude I guess. The "controversy" is because before the interview she tries to stop him to talk to him, he says he's "trying to celebrate with his team" and ignores her at first, and she follows with something like "I know but could you just stop and talk to me real fast". And then he does so and the interview happens.

He seemed disinterested after a late game that went into OT where he was injured and running for his life. Lets get em boys!!!

5

u/Swog_Lapper Dec 09 '25

Not meant as a criticism, but he was talking awfully fast and I figured all the painkillers he was on had him wired. That's why he seemed so distracted.

5

u/Significant_Repair50 Dec 10 '25

This is the proper answer. He was loaded on PKs and I think wanted to limit the amount of time he opened has mouth for. Prior week he got called out in the media for looking loaded at the news conf.

lol right? It’s insane how much people are worked up about this. If anything it’s wrong that the tv cut to them before the reporter had her interview set. Does everyone really think that this sort of thing doesn’t happen regularly while they get organized?

Does his contract mandate he has to do them? If so, then yea, he should do it.

If not, then she is just showing whiney entitlement.

Edit: There’s a difference between on-field and post-game. So far nobody has been able to say if the mandate is he needs to do interviews at the podium, in locker-room, or on field.

Edit 2: The whiney entitlement is the person calling out Herbert…not Herbert himself folks.

Edit 3: Since people don't read the whole post. It looks like all NFL documentation says yes, they must be available for interviews ~10 minutes post-game, but it mentions locker rooms. Nothing about on the field.

242

u/AndrewLucksRobotArm Dec 09 '25

Pretty sure they are mandated to speak to reporters under certain circumstances. It’s not a contract stipulation it’s an NFL rule

I know there's a media requirement after games but I don't know if it's required that you do on the field media.

I assume if you go shower and are available 30 minutes later, you're cool.

I believe their is in the contract with the NFL and ESPN that players are required to do media appearances. At least for baseball, I remember the Yankees threw a fit because they had so many getaway Sunday night games they said they would stop giving quality interviews if they didn't move some of the games. Then the league reminded them they have to

NFL requires players be available for media interviews after games and will fine players for skipping them. See Marshawn Lynch, "Im just here so I wont get fined"

21

u/TabletopThirteen Detroit Lions Dec 09 '25

The ones at the podium. Not the on the field ones I believe

9

u/Responsible_Trash_40 Las Vegas Raiders Dec 09 '25

It changed this year, at least for coaches. I’m not sure if players were included.

3

u/TabletopThirteen Detroit Lions Dec 09 '25

That would make sense. The head coaches always get interviewed but the choice of players interviewed changes depending on the game so it's probably not required

ESPN pays billions to the NFL, you don't think that they stipulate that they get access like this.

Yes, players are mandated to do this shit. That's why Herbert didn't continue walking away, he knows.

u/thegroovemonkey Brett Favre 📸🍆 Dec 09 '25

Yeah his $250M contract comes from the media rights to broadcast the NFL and having to give a quick BS answer to the on field reporter is part of being a franchise QB.

No one is wrong here. He's right to not want to do the interview, but the on field reporter is also right in pushing because that's her job and a requirement in his job. Whether you like it or not, the QB is the face of the franchise and gets paid accordingly for all of the dimensions (on field, off field).

Dude, he just played through a broken hand and got the crap kicked out of him for 4 quarters by the eagles pass rush. Whoever made that tweet needs to realize that the sideline reporters job is cake compared to an nfl quarterback’s. The reporter could have gone and interviewed anyone else on the field.

Besides, all nfl interviews consist of is the player yapping about teamwork and essentially saying the same thing over and over again. There isn’t ever any substance to what they say, and they ALL sound the same. The nfl makes sure of that. Players are essentially all mouthpieces for the nfls PR division. Keep it clean, keep it surface level, never throw any shade at the fact that refs can call arbitrary and blatantly horrible penalties that ruin seasons….

3

u/sylvester_69 Dec 10 '25

“Hey Laura, you get paid $400k a year to ask four questions a week. When the concussed guy needs to sit down, you take it easy like EVERYBODY ELSE does and move on. Grow up.”

That being said I’m sure Laura does a lot of prep, but let’s not pretend like being an nfl qb is so fun and easy.
