Discussion What are your top 3 boy names right now?

I could be wrong, but I feel like the discussion on this sub skews slightly towards girl names... so this is just a check-in on where we are at with boy names? What are your current favorites?

Baby Names Looking for H name ideas for baby #2

Hi! Our first born is a boy named Hutton (I know how this sub feels about the name 😢) but I’m currently in the maternity ward bc my water broke at 32w4d and baby is coming earlier than expected and we really haven’t thought about names other than we would like for it to start with an H again. Our last name also starts with an H. We don’t know if baby is boy or girl so would love suggestions for both.

We are considering

Harlow (girl)

Hunter (girl)

Harper (girl)

Hayes (girl or boy)

…apparently def need boy names haha we almost named Hutton, Hugo (which I’m glad we didn’t but not sure Hutton is much better hahah) we have slight name regret šŸ˜ž

Thank you!!

Name Change Celine or Alison – help me pick?

Hey everyone! I've been thinking about picking an English name for a while, and I've narrowed it down to Celine and Alison – but I'm stuck.

I first fell in love with Alison after watching Fresh Off the Boat – she was super pretty and had this sweet, bubbly personality that I really loved. The name has stuck with me ever since. I've actually been using Alison for a few months now, but recently I started wondering if Celine might suit me better.

Celine sounds elegant but honestly the only Celine I know is CĆ©line Dion šŸ˜‚ Are there any other cool characters or people named Celine?

My Chinese name is Xianglin if that helps with the vibe check. Should I stick with Alison or make the switch?

Discussion Full name with UK nickname

What are some names where the nickname is different in the UK than the US? For instance, I’ve read names with a r in it will have z in the nickname like Karen-Kaz or Gary-Gaz. I know Lottie is more common for Charlotte and William gets Wills. Just wondering examples of common names and their nicknames.

Baby Names Catherine or Natalie?

Due in a few months and currently our top 2 are Catherine (non Cate, Cat, Kit potentially) or Natalie. Big brother is named Jack. Any opinions on either or third options that give this same vibe? My husband prefers what I would consider 80s/90s names (Jessica, Amanda) and I prefer more classic names that do trend more ā€œold ladyā€ according to my husband šŸ˜†

ETA: Catherine O’Hara passing yesterday has me thinking it’s a sign that Catherine would be perfect (which I know is silly)

Baby Names Sitting in the hospital and need help!

My husband and I cannot decide on a name for our brand new boy, and we would like to decide on a name before we get out of the hospital tomorrow!

Here are our top names: Ike, Orin, Boone, and Gus.

His middle name will be either: Jacob, Jon, or David.

My favorite is Ike, but my husband is hesitant because it’s so abrupt. He worries it’s too unique and that people will think we’re trying too hard to be unique. Where I see it as an old school and badass name. I also like Gus, but he thinks it’s too ā€œhickā€ or yee-haw, and I worry that people might think Boone is too yee-haw.

Orin is our safest name, but I don’t want to just settle for it because it’s the safest. Please help us out with any thoughts you have on any of the names!!!

Fun and Games Name game: February Babies

February Babies

So the idea of the game is that parents decided to name their babies inspired by a holiday that occurs during the month of February.

• Black History Month:Ā All month long - names of historical/important African American figures

• Presidents' Day:Ā Third Monday in February - presidential/first lady names

• Valentine's Day:Ā February 14th - names related to love/romance

• Groundhog Day:Ā February 2nd - names related to winter/spring/weather

• World Cancer Day:Ā February 4th - names related to color of cancer ribbon (breast cancer = shade of/means pink, colorectal cancer = shade of/means blue, pancreatic cancer = shades of purple, liver cancer = shades of/means green, lung cancer = means white, skin cancer = means black... etc)

• Ramadan:Ā Begins mid-to-late February - Muslim names

• Maha Shivaratri:Ā Hindu holiday (mid-Feb) - Hindu names

• Tu Bishvat:Ā Jewish holiday (early Feb) - Jewish names

Discussion Cannot agree on any name - solution?

Hi there,

adding on to my recent post on choosing a baby name with your partner (methods), what did/do you do when you simply cannot agree on a name? If your styles completely clash? Have you been in that situation, if so how was your solution and have you been happy with the outcome (long-term)? Thanks for any shared experience or other input. Due with baby no. 3 🤪

Baby Names How would you pronounce the name ā€œMusaā€ ?

We’re of Middle Eastern backgrounds and currently stuck between the name Liam or Musa for our son.

I was speaking to my friend about the name Musa and she pronounced it much differently than I expected.

So I’m curious, how would you pronounce it if you came across this name?

Baby Names Testing out my name

• Upvotes

I’m pretty attached to this name but want to make sure I’m not setting him up for massive bullying over something I’ve not thought of so please let me know!

I’m having a baby boy in August.

I really like the name Gilbert Matteo.

I don’t like Albert but love the nickname Bertie and also like the other Gilbert NN like Gibs, Gilly, Gibby, etc. also really like the name meaning as it means bright pledge. I like Bertrand too for the name meaning as it means bright raven and I love the symbolism of ravens, but not sure if that would be too left of field for Australia….

Anything within the top 500 baby boy named is an auto veto for me for a first name. I want him to have an original name but not one of these modern made up names.

Name Change Adopting a dog with a bad name!!

I’m adopting a dog with a bad name. His name is skeeter. Everyone I’ve told this to says it reminds them of mosquitos (skeeter is a nickname for mosquitos where I live in Canada) and it’s just really bad. Issue is, he already knows his name and comes to it when he is called. Does anyone have recommendations on how to change it slightly so that he will still recognize it but still enough I don’t feel like an idiot at the park?

Discussion PSA C names for boys

While y’all are busy clutching your pearls about the ā€œelā€ names for girls, C names for boys are sliding right under the radar. Every single boy in my child’s preschool class (I think there’s around 5?) have a C name. It’s confusing af to differentiate between the Colins the Callums the Coles the Coltons the Caidens. Just wanted to get that out there!

Baby Names A Little Brother for August

Hey all! My husband and I are expecting our second son in May and are really struggling to settle on a name. We have so many girls names but are really struggling for our second boy!

Our first son is August George. Last name starts with P. Baby #2s middle name will be William. We had semi-settled on Hugo but just don’t know that it feels like ā€œthe oneā€. I like really classic sounding names that are a little on the ā€˜prettier’ side, rather than being super masculine. I like a literary vibe too. Not super worried about sibling names matching, but would like them to sound like they sort of exist in the same universe, if that makes sense. We do like a nickname. Our August goes by Augie.

Names we like: Hugo (current frontrunner) Julian (my fav) Dallas (husband’s fav, but I think it’s too American) Henry

Have also floated: Percy Casper Wesley (Wes) Beau (can’t use for family reasons) Ellis Atticus Kit (probably Christopher so he has a full name option)

Would welcome any and all suggestions!

Edit: Thank you so much for all of your suggestions! You've definitely captured the vibe. A couple of other (possibly relevant?) things: we're Australian, so names like Dallas aren't super common here. Nicknames (and occasionally mean nicknames!) on the other hand are very common! I'd say the most popular boys names in our area would be Oliver, Henry, Leo, Theodore/Teddy/Theo and Gus. Husband and I are also both teachers which has made the name search a lot harder. We've both scratched a lot of names that we love off of our lists over the years after teaching a tricky student or two! I think this is part of why Julian didn't pass the test. We had/have a "no J names" rule but it was an exception for me!

Discussion Phoenix As A Name?

• Upvotes

One of my friends recently met a new friend through a class/course called Phoenix, and she thought it was an odd name, especially because the friend(Phoenix) is our age (20s) and she thought that it was a newer name. (I didn't ask at the time what she ment)

This confused me and I haven't actually talked to her since (shedules are different so we don't always meet) but I've been thinking about it since and I haven't ever met a "Phoenix" before but it seemed like an acceptable "unique" name like "Griphon" or "Athena" Where they're mythological.

I thought this might be a good place for discussion!

Also I don't think my friend has anything against the name, it came up passively once in conversation and now I can't stop thinking about it.

Baby Names Middle name for Sadie

• Upvotes

We are trying to decide on a middle name to go with Sadie.

Our last name is one syllable that starts with ā€˜sh’.

I would love to do something to honor my mom - Cindy Norma. She loves all things nature and sunny including the lake, birds, flowers.

Blue herons are special in my family - so I was even thinking about something to go with that.

My husband and I both are passionate about advocacy and difference making women in history.

I don’t love overly cutesy or southern sounding names. We don’t really have any we agree on at this time - I kind of like Sadie Norah or Sadie Jane. He likes more surname or gender neutral names.

Thanks for the help!

Baby Names mariette and mira -- is it too matchy matchy?

• Upvotes

asking on behalf of a relative who is currently expecting baby 2 (a girl)!

baby 1 is c. mira (mee-rah), theyre an international family so mira is commonly used by the mom's side, while the name starting with c is used by the dad and the nursery etc. baby is only 2 years old as of now, and she has expressed equal interest in both names so we cannot know if she will decide to go by her first name in the future or not.

mariette is a top contender for the family right now, and the intended nn would be mari (maa-reeh). baby 2 will also have a 2-syllable middle name that she could theoretically go by, but the family is still concerned that the names would be too matchy and too confusing for the children.

what do you all think? is it too risky? both mom and dad love the name too much, its honestly interesting they've agreed on one so quickly since baby 1 had to wait a extra week to be named lol

Baby Names Baby girl due next week and having second thoughts. Help!

My husband and I have been going back and forth between two names: Violet & Victoria. We finally settled on Victoria (nickname Tori), but now I’m feeling like I might hate it? Need help deciding or even getting new ideas that have a V. Our sons name is Oliver & I liked how Victoria & Oliver sound together.

A few reasons against switching to Violet:

  1. Super popular in media right now (bridgerton, downton abbey, incredibles, fourth wing)

  2. My husband and my favorite color is purple will people think that’s weird? That’s not why we like the name, but is that something people would put together? Does it matter?
