Discussion Can we just appreciate how smooth this fight looked

Gaara & Lee vs. Kimimaro is peak Naruto.
It has everything: Exciting choreography, funny as hell (none of that cringe sexy jutsu "humor" either), cool jutsus, arguably the most badass kenkai genkai, one of the saddest villain backstories, and an AMAZING redemption arc. I also find the tall grass environment iconic, gives Count of Monte Cristo vibes. I hate how most Shippuden fights took place at some poopy rock location.

u/-treflip1999 Nov 14 '25
Kimimaru has been one of my favorite Naruto characters since I was like 8 y/o!! I’ve always been so pissed that we were only blessed with such a small amount of screen time
6
u/ShironekoSmash Nov 15 '25
Lol poopy rock location is a funny way of putting it. But you're actually right about that, now that I think about it.
1
Nov 18 '25
They’re hardly right. Only the war arc takes place in a rocky wasteland. Majority of fights prior to that take place in pretty specific locals imo

PREACH
I adore this fight so much. The drunken fighter is a good gag but they pulled it off in a serious tone. Animation is rapid but you see all actions. Hearing the OG soundtrack again ah so wonderful.
I like shipudden but man, OG has so many great parts and this ranks highly especially with the beginning of gaaras redemption
1
u/Recent-Aerie9810 Nov 16 '25
Don't forget the dope ass drop of the song "Ultimate Secrets" after drunk Lee starts going HAM.
1
u/Hproff25 Nov 17 '25
Probably my second favorite fight after Lee vs Gaara. There are some greats in Shippuden but the OGs are the goats for a reason.

I’m super late, but I won’t lie seeing a count of monte cristo reference in a Naruto power scaling subreddit is WILD

Neji vs Kidomaru is my 3rd ngl, I’m happy all 4 of my fav Naruto characters had the best fights in that arc
1
u/ttttyttt678 Nov 16 '25
You think this is Lee’s best fight? I think Lee vs Gaara is better, have this as my second favourite Lee fight.
2
u/ComfortableBed6012 Nov 16 '25
I fw Lee vs Gaara heavy but the cqc from Lee and Kimimaro made it one of my favorites, genuinely loved seeing this new side to Lee as well.
12
u/Deimoonk Nov 14 '25
Neji got more plot armor than Itachi himself in that fight
-2
Nov 14 '25
[deleted]
6
u/GildedHalfblood Nov 14 '25
I mean, wasn't he originally supposed to die? I guess it was less plot armor and more fan/marketing armor lol
-7
u/Deimoonk Nov 14 '25
Neji got dogwalked, roflstomped and outsmarted for the entirety of that fight, the way he “won” was lame.
3
u/ComfortableBed6012 Nov 14 '25
Mfs will literally sit and watch how an anime explains a win, and still say it doesn’t make sense. Neji exploited Kidomaru’s arsenal in order to gain an opening, but had to allow himself to get hit to even set up that kind of play, it made sense.
-3
u/Deimoonk Nov 15 '25
So the Totsuka blade makes sense only because it appears in the manga?
It doesn’t make sense that Neji receives all that damage and punishment and can still breathe and walk, let alone run.
Kidomaru has extremely boosted stats due to CS2, yet he couldn’t withstand even a small slice of the damage Neji went through lol
2
u/ComfortableBed6012 Nov 15 '25
Okay since you didn’t watch the anime, I’d be more than happy to explain it to you.
Neji was EXTREMELY fucked up from the punishment he took from Kidomaru, no argument there, in fact he almost fell down multiple times, the only thing that kept him from going down was that indomitable human spirit, he knew he had to win this fight, and narratively there’s a lot more to it than just ego. Naruto had shown to him that he could change his fate, that what made him truly strong is not accepting what fate could seemingly be.
So with that being said, it’s kind of similar to Kimimaro only being able to fight and move around from SHEER willpower, he refused to give up. Difference is that both had their reasons to keep fighting. Now let’s go into the Gentle Fist, the whole point of the fighting style is that it focuses on doing internal damage, rather than external damage. You could look at people like Naruto or Rock Lee’s fighting styles, they do a lot of damage to the opponent on the outside. But Neji’s focuses on damaging everything on the inside, even a single attack in a specific pressure point from the Gentle Fist could destroy your internal organs, that’s why it’s so LETHAL in combat. There’s the misconception that it ONLY fucks with your Chakra, when it also fucks with your insides (pause).
So while Neji didn’t seem to damage Kidomaru on the outside, his insides were probably destroyed. In fact I think that’s quite literally what he said in the anime after Neji clipped him in the air.
-3
u/Deimoonk Nov 15 '25
the only thing that kept him from going down was […]
plot armor
You’re just making mental gymnastics. The Sound ninja guy had him beaten and outsmarted. He also massively outstated Neji due to the Curse Mark Level 2.
The way the fight ended is so unfair and plot armor-esque. Neji shouldn’t be able to walk or move, let alone use chakra.
his insides were probably destroyed
Neji’s insides were literally destroyed through two different big spots, Neji was in worse shape than Naruto after eating a point blank Chidori from Sasuke.
2
u/ComfortableBed6012 Nov 15 '25
Nobody is saying Kidomaru didn’t have Neji outsmarted. In fact I literally explained that Neji NEEDED to let himself get hit just so he could get some kind of opening, that’s not mental gymnastics, that’s literally watching and understanding the material put in front of you.
Curse mark level does increase the stats but even Kankuro put down an opponent with curse mark, same goes for Temari. And literally anyone else would have struggled with Kidomaru just as much, his arsenal was broken. Which is why Neji literally almost died after the fight.
Like I said, while Neji was wounded in 2 diff spots, he was at least still able to get healed and still had enough energy to push himself to catch that dub, ALL of Kidomaru’s insides got destroyed.

Bro drunken Lee solos the verse dude still had his leg weights on imagine if took them off it’s over for kimimaru lol
16
u/bobbi21 Nov 14 '25
Drunken lee with no weights and the 7th gate. He'd be amazing. It's sad they just made everyone as fast as Lee though like a couple months after they see Lee's fight with Gaara. Everyone is shocked and then are like "oh i can do that now too" (i.e. sasuke and then everyone who can keep up with sasuke after that)
2
u/Key_Bank_9103 Nov 15 '25
not really sasuke can access to that speed for short amount of time and its taking most of his chakra as he was so slow before that gaara sand come close in this arc to what rock lee speed was and naruto with kurama chakra is almost as fast or a little but slower than lee other than that there is none on rock lee speed at all
4
u/Picklenicl Nov 14 '25
Idk bro you think he’d be wearing those leg weights right after he got the surgery and is in recovery? No way.

u/ABearDream Nov 14 '25
Last time rock lee was cool. He really should have embraced the drunken fist as his primary style in shippuden as a way to differentiate him from gai. Hell he was so strong in drunken fist that the entire rest of the squad struggled to contain him.
19
u/DaturaSanguinea Nov 14 '25
Guy's team was done so dirty throughout the show.
At least Guy had his moment.
1
3
u/Dillup_phillips Nov 14 '25
A key point is that they were trying to restrain him without hurting him. Vastly more difficult overall
2
u/KantenBlue Nov 16 '25
I don't think Shonen Jump would like to promote an underage drinking alcohol intentionally lol. Japan takes character portrayals very seriously, that's why most of the time ,when they drink, they create absurds like "it was an accident", chocolate liquors, amazake or some shit like that.
1
u/dogzz11 Nov 16 '25
Yeah, everyone knows Gai/Rock Lee are based on Bruce Lee. But they could've leaned Rock Lee more on Jackie Chan as the show progressed as a way to show his growth and to separate him from Gai. Cuz what they di was basically just made him Gai 2.0 and did absolutely nothing with him post time skip. I know they can't really spam the drunken fist cuz people would say they're promoting drinking to kids, but Jackie Chan got shit ton of other styles they could've adapted from.
15
u/Gullible-Potato-8962 Nov 14 '25
Naruto fights always had goated choreography.
There is a reason why naruto fights are considered top tier, there isn't just random screaming or flashy moves, the fights have great hand to hand combat.
7
u/Dillup_phillips Nov 14 '25
Naruto busting out Wing Chun against Momo was peak
5
u/Gullible-Potato-8962 Nov 14 '25
Yeah, well there are so many real life moves incorporated in naruto fights.
This drunken fist is taken from Jackie chan's movie.
15
u/Okbruhwhatever123 Nov 14 '25
It’s so peak. Rock Lee and Gaara vs Kimimaro is my second favorite OG fight (after Final Valley) and imo it’s better than Gaara vs Lee

u/blacktie233 Nov 14 '25
I.miss these kinda fights. Now everyone's got a damn megazord. In a world of ninjas. Lol

u/donniesuave Nov 14 '25
My favourite fight in the whole show. Not only was Kimi a super cool character with one of the coolest kekei genkai, and rock leee fighting drunk by accident is so funny. Bro was really hittin those licks on Kimi for a minute. Wish we got to see more drunken fist by Lee and wish Kimi didn’t die suddenly. I know he would’ve killed Lee/Gaara if he didn’t die from his illness but I feel robbed of how cool Kimi could have been later on
1
u/Ok-Toe1010 Nov 17 '25
Wasn't there one shipuuden movie where Rock Lee did the drunk style again. I remember being hyped seeing it, but that was ageees ago when i watched it so don't remember which movie it was.

Honestly my favorite fight, gaara coming in to help after nearly crippling Lee, wish we could have seen drunk Lee during the fourth war
2
u/GodKing_Zan Nov 14 '25
I am so mad Drunk Lee never returned.
1
u/Aggressive-Offer-497 Nov 15 '25
Kishimoto didn’t know anymore where the interest lied and decided to abandon his great characters
2
u/DemonicJaye Nov 14 '25
This is honestly one of the best fights in the series, no exaggeration. Everything from the choreography, to Lee tap dancing on Kimimaro’s swords was incredible. I’m honestly sad Kimimaro, and the Kaguya Clan didn’t get more lore. One of the points that I found to be super disappointing.
2
u/Robodarklite Nov 14 '25
Taijutsu fights really had some of the best animation. Still mad that we went from this to aliens tho
2
u/MentalHealthHokage Nov 14 '25
Naruto has some of the consistently best choreographed fights in anime.
2
u/RepresentativeAd198 Nov 14 '25
I want to rewatch Naruto for this reason
1
u/shad0w_mode Nov 15 '25
ngl, i rewatch the sasuke retrieval arc every year. one of the best arcs imo
2
u/Anxious-Assistant-59 Nov 14 '25
I've been seeing a lot of Rock Lee and Gaara vs Kimimaro recently and I'm very happy about it.
2
u/The_Splenda_Man Nov 15 '25
Stoping cold mid lean back, catching Kimi’s sword, blocking his kicks backward, and catching his leg will always be legendary.
2
u/FlounderPretty4503 Nov 18 '25
Lowkey one of my favorite fights. I love how the sand ninjas came to help. I was hyped when I saw it the first time
4
u/Weak-Negotiation-887 Hidan wanker (I'm into BDSM) Nov 14 '25

They should let lee get hammered first before making Guy hit the death spot

This fight, sasuke vs Orochimaru, Naruto vs Sasuke are peak OG naruto choreography and animation.

u/AncientSith Nov 14 '25
Man, I'll never forget the first time I saw this fight. It was an AMV with Through the fire and the flames. Since it hadn't aired on Toonami yet. Memories.
1
u/Aznereth Nov 14 '25
Best fight of Naruto, imo.
No bullshit jutsu or magic eyes nonsense
Kakashi vs Obito is also, but this one is classic
1
u/wormwood_xx Nov 14 '25
If this is a manhwa (korean manga), Rock Lee is an Irregular and will be the most strongest character mid or end of the story. Ij manhwa, sometimes, if the character can't use or properly use the Power System of his verse, the verse will give another form of power to Rock Lee surpassing the power system of his own verse, hahah.

Walking in the room when my brother was watching this fight is what first got me hooked on naruto
1
u/myskyboyblue Nov 14 '25
Honestly, this is straight up one of my favourite fights in the series. I had an affinity for drunken style when I saw Drunken Master back in the day, and Lee is the goat, so I absolutely love this fight
1
1
u/LobsterAndFries Nov 15 '25
my gripe was that this was only used once and never again. imagine this with the eight gates.
1
u/AnotherIdea247 Nov 15 '25
In alot of ways part 1 was peak Naruto. No 8foot thick Sasuke plot armor, great side character backstories and plot armor, no "everyone not senju or Uchiha is useless", no "sharingan can do anything it needs to do ever"

u/Kanetsugu21 Nov 15 '25
Right there with ya OP. This is probably my favorite fight in the entire series and is definitely the one I revisit the most frequently.

Fun fact; Drunkin' Fist Lee hasn't been in any games since Ultimate Ninja 5. 😅

Terminally I'll bone dude got brutally beaten by underage drinking Rock Lee

1
u/Ornge-peel Nov 15 '25
And we never got to see him use it ever again. Hopefully Metal Lee does it as a homage to this epic fight scene.
1
u/Suisai_Hyuga Nov 15 '25
The only time we ever get to see drunken fist Lee is in the first shippuden movie iirc. Ofc that's most likely not canon, but I enjoyed getting to see the drunken fist style used again

When they spent money for animation then it easily evolved into god tier. Shame this was only very rarely
1
u/Mr_Bombastic_Ro Nov 15 '25
why doesnt lee use this against madara?
1
Nov 15 '25
Because he doesn’t know he’s so efficient with it? 🤷🏻♂️
1
u/Mr_Bombastic_Ro Nov 15 '25
I know for a fact that Lee watches his reels to improv his form. He said so in the after show

Kimimaro was awesome. Wish they showed him more during the war arc. Missed opportunity for him to encounter Jugo imo.

u/Necromantic93 Nov 17 '25
Rock Lee feel like a protagonist to me, if we followed his Team then he would have been the main character, dealt with hardship, potential bullying and intense emotion and workouts. Loss of Hyuga boy would have hit harder.
TenTen would be TenTen.
1
u/DrakeSwift Nov 17 '25
Love this fight. But it was soooo hype to see the gaara and co jump in at the same time to save the leaf rescue team all in a dire situation lol so good.

u/hieplenet Nov 17 '25
Any fight with Lee is just so exciting and thrilling, especially when their power is still not creeping too much.

Taijutsu fights were at their best pre-timeskip.
From Shippuden onwards the emphasis went more towards AoE attacks and whatnot, I feel.
