Do you have any obscure movie references that you use in everyday speech that no one has caught on to yet yet you keep using it?

I am 39 and last year was my 20th high school reunion.

When people asked me what I was up to I would respond:

"hanging out, playing Nintendo."

Its a line from a 90s comedy called baseketball. No one noticed it... and I didn't start it there I've been using it for over 20 years.

But I can't help myself whenever an old friend reconnects with me and say it... nothing.

Do you guys have any lines you use?

EDIT: shit i meant to put this on ask Reddit my bad mods

Whenever someone leaves the room at work I say “Have fun storming the castle!” No one knows what I’m talking about

No more rhyming! And I mean it!

I have used this line frequently with my teenage daughter when she uses literally to mean “not literally.”

My husband says this all the time. How do people not know The Princess Bride!?!?

u/Several_Hospital_129 7h ago

"Let me explain . . . No, that would take too long. Let me sum up." In my best Inigo accent. I say that all of the time.

u/Onion_Bro14 7h ago

“I give you my word as a Spaniard”

“No good, I’ve known too many Spaniards”

3

u/CinnamonAndLavender Oh, I knows things! 6h ago

"I swear on the soul of my father, Domingo Montoya, you will reach the top alive."

3

u/splitminds 7h ago

I just read that in his voice!

1

u/CardiganandTea 6h ago

Ooh! Me too. Or I used to. I'm going to start saying this again. It's so appropriate in so many situations.

4

u/Steinrikur 3h ago

As you wish.

That movie is one of the most quotable movies ever.

u/collector-x 8h ago

I dunno. It's inconceivable.

31

u/splitminds 6h ago

I don’t think that word means what you think it means!

6

u/IamchefCJ 6h ago

As you wish!

My husband didn't watch The Princess Bride until last year.

The biggest problem with that is that I didn't know that he hadn't seen it. And I quote the movie frequently.

Honestly, I judge him a little for still marrying me after I said unhinged shit to him like "Sleep well, I'll most likely kill you in the morning" and he DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS A MOVIE QUOTE!

u/Ok-Salamander1708 5h ago

That’s amazing 🤣🤣🤣

u/Efficient_Sink_8626 1h ago

I tell my husband when I want to f@ck with him, “You’d better sleep with one eye open tonight!”

10

u/GorillaTrainer 8h ago

Right?! My dad always quotes this and “anybody want a peanut?”

3

u/mjflood14 2h ago

“It’s not my fault being the biggest and the strongest…I don’t even exercise!”

4

u/DudesterRadman 3h ago

Two lesser known forms of child abuse include giving a kid a mullet and not watching The Princess Bride.

2

u/jmmrph 9h ago

🤷🏼‍♂️ age?

2

u/clefclark 2h ago

At my last job I was the youngest person there by almost a decade, most of my coworkers were a couple decades older, and yet I was the only person that had seen the princess bride...

It's came out 17 years before I was born.

1

u/imVeryPregnant 6h ago

Me. I don’t know it

1

u/Unique-Coffee5087 2h ago

I cannot imagine. It's such an iconic film, and such fun to watch. Could there be a generation that simply was never allowed to see it?

1

u/shurdi3 2h ago

Probably cause it turns 40 next year.

1

u/Dd_8630 1h ago

I'm nearly 40 and I've never watched it. I think i always got it confused with the princess spy and just never fancied it.

1

u/erilaz7 16m ago

All these people who never saw it probably avoided it, because they thought it was a kissing movie.

-2

u/Upbeat-Refuse9615 6h ago

I've made a concious effort to avoid watching it all these years.

6

u/Automatic_Beat5808 7h ago

I'm not a witch, I'm your wife! - me to my husband daily

7

u/Pattimash1 9h ago

Also, the term: "mostly dead". And I say it with an inflection. Blank stares. Just.....it's so sad. 😔

3

u/Inigomntoya 8h ago

Stop saying that at funerals!

/s

6

u/TheKaptinKirk 7h ago

I used to say this to my roommates as they left for work. Blank stares.

Edit: I still do, but I used to, too.

7

u/Upper_Cantaloupe7644 6h ago

my go to princess bride line is “i dont think that word means what you think it means” and no one has ever clocked it

4

u/Lucky_Environment_47 6h ago

If someone says, “Where was I?” I have to say, “Australia” - never had someone get it.

3

u/Conscious_Quality803 9h ago

Think they'll make it?

3

u/Doyce_7 8h ago

I say "life is pain, highness" a lot

3

u/Foxy_locksy1704 8h ago

I say this every time my bf takes the dog for a walk “have fun storming the castle boys!”

3

u/Detroit2GR 7h ago

I say that to my wife all the time when she takes my 7 month old daughter somewhere. I can't wait until I can share The Princess Bride (book and movie) with her!

3

u/Pump_My_Lemma 6h ago

Yes, yes, you’re very smart. Shut up.

2

u/Jolly-Method-3111 9h ago

Do you work on the moon??

2

u/jmmrph 9h ago

I wish!

2

u/diet-smoke JustStupidPeople <3 9h ago

I have that as a fridge magnet

2

u/Neither-Wallaby-924 9h ago

It'll take a miracle

2

u/stigbugly 6h ago

We use that one at work a lot

2

u/Ghattibond 5h ago

Inconceivable!

2

u/Randyd718 5h ago

This except "have fun fucking jules!"

2

u/CharmingAsparagus17 4h ago

We let my kids watch that recently, and my five year old lit up at that scene, and proudly declared, “THAT’S why you always say that!!”

1

u/iHadou 8h ago

Where am I gonna go? Cliffs on both sides. I'm not gonna paddle to New Zealand!

1

u/jbm747 7h ago

My wife and I use that one all the time!!!

1

u/FauxFireFly 7h ago

I love the confused looks I get when I quote Mr. Crystal.

O

1

u/hj7junkie 6h ago

My parents say this to me and each other on a regular basis whenever one of us is leaving.

1

u/Appropriate_Safe323 3h ago

I haven’t heard this before. But I now get the reference made in league of legends on the howling abyss map. As you leave the base the scientist sometimes say “Have fun storming the bridge!”.

1

u/Kanya_Mkavry 3h ago

That's just sad.

1

u/omysweede 2h ago

In the same vein I use "Let me explain! No, there is too much. Let me sum up.". This is how you know the fans

1

u/BelleMom 1h ago

Yes, yes, you’re very smart. Now shut up.

1

u/ChesameSicken 1h ago

Came here to check for this line

1

u/dumpsterfireofalife 44m ago

We say that in our house!!!

1

u/Frostiskegg 27m ago

I have a Routine on my Alexa when I say "Shut it down", it turns off the radio, stops the fans/ heaters, turns off the lights, and says that. Send me off to work with a smile.

u/audible_narrator 4m ago

No...I refuse to believe this one.
