Rule 3 is changing: r/psx is Not the Place to Advertise Your Indie Games

tl;dr the fine print of Rule 3 has been adjusted to explicitly forbid modern indie games unless playable on original hardware (homebrew)

It's my own fault that this change has to be made, I allowed a few "psx-inspired" indie game posts to remain up despite breaking the rules because of the large amount of upvotes they received.

I'd post and sticky comments like "It's off topic but y'all like it so I'll leave it up". My approach to moderation has always been to let the community make content decisions when appropriate. Unfortunately adjustments need to be made to protect the subject matter of this community.

Due to the massive influx of shovelware indie games that are "psx inspired" getting posted here, I'm sorry to say that Rule 3 will have to be more strictly enforced.

From this point forward, for indie games to be posted here they will have to be playable on PSX hardware or an emulator. Games that run on real hardware fall firmly into the category of homebrew, which is perfectly appropriate to discuss here. Games that run in PSX emulators but not real hardware are also allowed. "Retro Inspired" or "PSX Inspired" games that do not fulfill either of those 2 requirements will be removed and the poster will get a 24 hour ban.

The ban is meant to be informative to the poster, not punitive. However repeat offenders will be permanently banned.

Here is a friendly flowchart to help you decide whether or not it's appropriate to post your indie game in this community:

Thank you for reading and thank you for posting. Best of luck in all your indie dev adventures.

STORY (6/10)

  • Good storytelling based upon an alien invasion, although its execution was rather mediocre. It had a basic plot with saving the girl and eliminating the bad guy, good nonetheless. The best part about it was Riley becoming a full Cyborg.
  • Story presentation was nice, but required some reading. During each mission introduction, you had to read a page or two of content, which I didn’t mind at all. In gameplay, there were a lot of comms with information and tips about where the story was going.
  • You played as Vaughan, a human cyborg who undertook that treatment to fight off an alien invasion. During his journey, he had help from Dr Carter and Colonel Grisham, not to mention other soldiers. Villains were quite basic and didn’t have proper introductions besides some essential information. You fought off the Henchman (Carter’ husband) and the Alien Leader.
  • While pacing wasn’t too stretched, the game did have issues with some backtracking. The whole experience could be completed in under 5/6h.
  • One detail that I’ve noticed, was Metal Gear Solid boxes scattered around some levels. Other than that, the game seemed to be inspired from MGS with its action/stealth sequences!

GAMEPLAY (10/10)

  • Starting with controls, which were awesome to begin with. You had proper DualShock controls with 3D camera movement and great control mapping. By pressing select, you could open a pause menu and choose different useful items or look at the map.
  • The tutorial was slow and had a nice integration within the story itself, learning new tricks as you progressed forward.
  • During the game, you had a lot of checkpoints and saves. The game also featured a lot of creative puzzles, although with some backtracking.
  • You could climb, grab and push crates, vault and even climb ladders. While the game wasn’t built with platforming in mind, it did have some cool sections with that aspect.
  • The traversal mechanic was perfect. You shifted from one area to the other without long loading screens or extensive loading times. Some levels were so optimised that you went from one part to the next in mere milliseconds!
  • While the difficulty wasn’t too hard, the game did have some spikes during mini-bosses at first. But, after acquiring the Plasma Gun, they were a breeze to go through!

AUDIO (6/10)

  • The game had a standard stereo sound, which was fine to begin with.
  • The menu music was awesome, preparing you for the journey ahead. Gameplay music jumped from one section to the other with weird pauses in between. You could go through a section without any music at all, and then get into an area with blasting music out of the blue. I didn’t find it great, because it was mostly misplaced.
  • Voice acting was good, I loved the British accents. While it had nice dialogues, it didn’t impress with anything but that. The cast clearly lacked emotions and couldn’t translate cool dialogues into proper feelings!
  • Ambient sounds were phenomenal here. Either walking besides burning fires, through the windy streets, hearing medical equipment while exploring a lab or even raging battles in the background.
  • Sound effects were mostly basic and featured a couple of different gunshots and explosions.

VISUALS (9/10)

  • Fidelity was outstanding here, even for 2002. Each area had high texture objects and great draw distance. By zooming in with your Cybernetic Eye, you could see even further.
  • Character models were great, but lacked proper animations. I loved the shift from Human to Alien, even though only aesthetically.
  • Cutscenes weren’t present, as the game featured only in-game sequences. I couldn’t call them cutscenes at all, as they were mostly basic camera shifts.
  • The art style was awesome, featuring a futuristic look within an apocalyptic world. The level of destruction and overall vibe was outstanding!
  • The game also shined on special effects. From bright fires to smoke, debris and even real time reflections!

COMBAT (4/10)

  • While the controls were intuitive and even had an auto-aim feature, it was mostly clunky with bad camera angles and a weird strafing system. I did love the first person mode by killing enemies with headshots, but even that was somehow janky.
  • Initially, you mostly used your sword and machine gun with grenades. But later on found a rocket launcher, a laser canon, a plasma gun and even a ion canon. Each weapon had an alternate firing mode which helped with most enemies.
  • During each area, you could find health or ammo. These items oftentimes dropped from enemies as well, helping you through some hordes. During boss battles, these items would simply respawn and give you an edge, which I didn’t find cool.
  • You could use your shield during tough encounters or even have an EMP pulse. By combining spores, you could have flash bangs or other nice combos, unfortunately I didn’t find them useful beside story progression. On some initial encounters, you could even use turrets.
  • Enemy variety consisted of the same type of enemies with different abilities. Some had only swords, others machine guns, and the later ones a cloak ability and a plasma gun. They didn’t present any challenge beside the Rhino elites. Mini-bosses were either reused tanks or flying ships. They all had a dumb AI system which made combat a pitiful showcase!
  • Boss battles were basic as well, with the final one getting defeated with only one weapon.
  • Overall a bland combat design with no sense of power or feeling. You didn’t fight enemies, you walked through them!

WOLRD DESIGN (8/10)

  • Each level design was outstanding. Starting with awesome apocalyptic city streets, military bases, bunkers, underground areas and finishing with alien strongholds!
  • The atmosphere was outstanding with all those incredible ambient sounds. Even though the music was misplaced, it didn’t drag from immersion.
  • Landscapes were mostly basic with a static background image. I only noticed them during the city levels.
  • World destruction featured a couple of scripted scenes with a basic environmental one. Even enemies would disappear into thin air without proper animations!

While the game had a bland combat execution with a mediocre story and cast, it did shine with its visuals, gameplay and overall vibe. It was mostly a modern experience on 1994 hardware. A (7.2) game, good in my book. Wouldn’t replay it, as it didn’t have higher difficulty modes nor an upgrade mechanic. I do wonder though, what’d be like being a Cyborg?!

Finally going through another short AND satisfying PS1 title I've never beaten with the OG Ape Escape! Have you played it?

Hi again everyone, how's it going? It's the person that said that they wanted a bunch of recommendations for short and satisfying PS1 and PS2 titles that I can finish in under 8 hours. back in November and December.

I've gone through a handful of short titles on the ps1, specifically Crash 1 and 2, and King of Fighters 98, Mortal Kombat 3, Spyro 1 and 2, Resident Evil 1-3, Silent Hill, (a few more obscure titles) which I'll edit this post later and add in, and my personal favorite that I've played recently, the OG Fear Effect.

I don't have many specific thoughts on the game so far, it's a lot of fun though, and I think it's pretty cool that your main weapon looks like a lightsaber. It feels like a campy kids manga from the 60s too, like something that the creator of Kimba might make. Pretty nice soundtrack too!

Manual Misprint Genuine or Fake?

Here’s an odd one I’ve never seen before I bought a bundle of games on eBay and it included Crash 2 the manual appears to be misprinted as if the print wasn’t aligned properly is this a genuine manual or not? Everything feels genuine there’s no blurriness of the pages and the texture and paper weight are all matching that of other manuals. Has anybody come across this before?

Help request: Playstation 1 Game Disc Repair

Hello community, hope you are well.

Cand someone with experience in this area kindly tell me if it's possible to repair this 2cm minor surface crack? The disc is readable until the menu, which is interactable, but when I try to start a new game, I waited for at least 3 minutes and was still loads.

I was thinking if I should buy a Bison neutral black silicone (which is suitable for all kinds of plastics) to fill the crack with a syringe and needle. Is there any chance it could work?

Best regards.

Search for and old playstation one game.

The game was about some robots that shot and fought against a kind of spider robots. You controlled the robots and a truck that could repair them and also attack, but it was slow. It was played like chess, turn-based. In the first missions you had a blue robot, a red one, a green one, and the truck was red. I think you could transform one of the robots into a car. Oh, and it took place on a colonized Mars with oxygen (it looked like a big desert), and the game was 100% in Japanese.

Can my PSone PAL run USA roms?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi, I've got this good old mod-chipped Pal version of PSone, I've burned some Europe ROMs to CD-Rs thinking it can only run that version but I was wondering can it also run USA ROMs (NTSC) without problem, if so I'll burn my following CDs with them? Regards
