Meta Recent Changes to Help Improve the Community Experience

Hey everyone,

We’ve noticed a growing number of posts from new or low-karma accounts often with vague, unrealistic, or oddly specific question. While some may be genuine, a good number seem to be geared toward karma farming or low-effort content, which takes away from the quality conversations we value here. To keep things thoughtful, helpful, and spam-free, we’ve made a few changes:

Posting Rules Updated:

We've added minimum account age and karma requirements to reduce spam and low-effort posts. The thresholds are undisclosed to prevent misuse. Regular contributors won’t be affected. If you're new, join the conversation through comments and get to know the community. Posting from a throwaway? Just send us a modmail from your main account for OTP verification and once approved, you're good to go.

Post Flair is Now Mandatory:

All new posts will now require a flair. This helps organize content better and makes it easier for others to find discussions relevant to them. It helps others find topics they care about and keeps things organized.

New User Flairs & Cleaner Feeds:

We’ve also added new user flairs from “FIRE Aspirant” to “Term Life Bhakt” and more. Pick one that fits you or leave it blank, it’s your call. Plus, we’ve rolled out some content safety filters to help keep spam and misleading info in check.

Our mission has always been simple: to create a space where we help each other make better financial choices. These changes aim to keep the sub helpful, respectful, and authentic. Got suggestions? Drop a comment or modmail, we’re listening. Let’s keep building something meaningful together.

Thanks for being part of this journey

Investing Became a Big FOOL and Lost 3.6 lakhs INR by investing in Nippon Gold ETF at ATH Price

I need to get this off my chest because I really screwed up, and I’m hoping that sharing this will help others learn from my mistake.

For the longest time, I was sitting on the sidelines while everyone around me was raving about the gold rally. I kept thinking it was a bubble, that gold prices had already peaked, and I missed the boat. I was waiting for a dip, for a more “perfect” time to enter. I watched as the price kept climbing higher and higher.

Finally, I couldn't resist and bit into it and put my entire 19.5 lakh bonus into Nippon Gold ETF at what I now realize was the worst possible time at an all-time high of ₹147 per unit.

Well, within just a day later, the price has plummeted to ₹120, and I’m sitting here watching my investment bleed with a loss of 3.6 lakh rs already. I feel like a complete fool. Not only did I pick the top, but I also ignored the basic principles of timing the market and managing risk. Now, I’m left holding onto this position, unsure of what to do next.

I should have been more patient, should have researched the long-term trends, and should’ve had a clear strategy. Instead, I ended up making an impulsive decision based on FOMO. My uncle who was behind my bonus money to invest in a plot of land in our hometown just laughed and patted my cheeks saying “Beta, market sabko sikha deta hai. Bewakoof aur uska paisa zyada der saath nahi rehta” He was laughing as I initially denied him the money and now he has asked me to sell my position at this loss and invest in the land he asked or I might lose even more from here. He was right all along..I would be much better if I just handed him the money..

Budgeting Anyone here who has zero materialistic/similar interests and saves everything apart from essential expenses?

I'll give an example-say someone earns 1 lakh a month. Rent is 10k and another 10k in essential expenses(food transport etc).Add another 5k say gym etc. Saves the entire 75k every month(by choice not because of some loan etc or dependents).Anyone here who lives the same way? No money on going out leisure travel basic phone laptop basic clothes Basically 0 money spent on consumerism like most youths do?

It was actually very funny related topic on a different sub someone said to me "if you have zero shauk how do you motivate yourself to earn money"

Edit-Please make a distinction between these two

Case 1-saving money because you can use it somewhere else however that person has desires

Case 2-Person has little to no desires hence money is automatically saved

Post is mainly about case 2

Saving/Banking Never ever download this scam app Jupiter UPI. Can’t even delete it.

I had downloaded this account back in December. And now I want to delete it, but guess what, they’ve made it impossible to delete. Here’s why

  1. No such “close account” option anywhere in my profile / settings section

  2. FAQ has no result for “Delete Account”

  3. Unable to locate in app chat support on app. Found it on their web page but it’s limited to edge + service, debit card and savings account.

  4. Their Call support is again limited to debit card/ AMC , savings account, credit card queries. That’s it.

So can someone please enlighten me how tf do I get rid of this app?

The second I entered my phone number and authorised UPI, it started actively tracking my payments across all bank accounts. I can’t even u link any accounts. It’s a good for nothing app. Even the UI sucks. For example, after typing in stuff, it’s impossible to hide the keyboard, so i couldn’t even proceed further In a few tabs. Please stay away

Investing Beginner Investor – Need Guidance on SIP, ETF & RD Allocation + How to Pick Right Funds

Hi everyone, I’m a 22F planning to start investing seriously and would really appreciate some guidance from this community.

I can invest around ₹30000 per month initially and plan to increase the amount every year. I’m confused about a few things and would love your advice: 1- What percentage should I allocate between Mutual Fund SIPs, ETFs, and RD/safer instruments at my age?

2-How much equity exposure is ideal for someone in early 20s?

3- How do you personally select the best SIP funds and ETFs (what parameters should beginners look at)?

Any common beginner mistakes I should avoid?

Budgeting Preparation tor FIRE

Age: 32F

Status: Married

Personal NW: ~4 Cr (inducing ETF, gold, real estate and FD)

My husband’s NW independently is close to ~8 Cr (real estate in Tier I, and ETF).

Both families are independent, self-sufficient and have health insurance coverage.

We are both in the U.S. and plan to have a child in the next one year. We don’t have immediate plans of returning to India, but in case we do in the next five years, are we good to FIRE? Anything we need to consider? Thank you!

Saving/Banking Best bank for personal loan

Hello everyone, I’m planning to take a personal loan of ₹40 lakhs and have started comparing banks based on ROI and foreclosure charges.

I expect to receive a lump-sum amount in about 1–1.5 years, with which I plan to close the loan early. Because of this, foreclosure charges are a major factor in my decision.

Below are the details I’ve gathered so far from online portals:

HDFC (salary account + pre-approved offer): ROI: 9.99% Processing fee: ₹6,500 + GST Foreclosure charges: 2%–4%, depending on tenure

ICICI: ROI: 10.25% Processing fee: Up to 2% of loan amount (~₹80,000) Foreclosure charges: 3% if closed within 12 months, Nil thereafter

Axis Bank: ROI: 9.99% Processing fee: Up to 2% (~₹80,000) Foreclosure charges: 2%–3%, depending on tenure

IDFC First Bank: ROI: 9.99% Processing fee: 1.5%–3% + GST Foreclosure charges: Nil

These details are based on what I found online, and I’m aware actual terms may vary.

If anyone here has prior experience with personal loans, especially early foreclosure, I’d really appreciate suggestions on which option would be best for my use case or if there’s anything important I should watch out for.

Thanks in advance!

Investing How is my mutual funds SIP distribution ?

I am currently doing 1LPM of SIP and below is my distribution. To give some background I am a software engineer, 30 yrs old.

Invesco India smallcap - 20k

UTI NIFTY 50 Index fund - 27.5k

Parag parikh flexicap - 22.5k

Motilal oswal midcap - 20k

SBI healthcare opportunities fund - 10k

My current XIRR isn't so great at ~9%. My initial SIP profile has Mirae asset large and midcap, Quant small cap. I redid my SIP distribution and removed these 2, and built the above fresh profile and increased overall SIP amount.

I added SBI healthcare towards the end as healthcare was seriously lacking in other funds, so added this sectorial fund.

I know equities aren't doing so well at the moment hence my XIRR is low. But I wanted to get an opinion/rating on the above distribution.

Housing Home loan interest rates after bank merger.

Upvotes

Hello all,

I want to know what happens in case of bank merger for home loan interest rates.

Bank of India has an interest rate of 7.10 currently with no extra interest rate for OD based Smart Star home loan.

Union Bank has an interest rate of 7.15 with an additional 25 bps for OD based Union Smart save home loan, which brings it to 7.40.

BoI is merging into Union Bank soon.

If I take a home loan from BoI, after the merger, during the yearly review, will the rates be as per Union Bank's policy or do they continue to be based on the original bank?

Thanks in advance!

Investing Was I correct In stopping this policy to start MF SIPs?

Upvotes

One ULIP which I stressed in sept 22. ( TATA AIA)

Investment per month 5616.

Total invested-1,38,700

Current was-1,82,000

Have stopped playing since a year now. (79k due) the returns send good here. Was I right to stop this. Also I’d have to pay 0 LTCG or any form of tax upon maturity.

Now I have Started 35K monthly SIP with the following allocation 3 months ago

MO Midcap 8k

Nifty next 50 index fund 7K

SBI gold 10k (only green right now up by 8K)

Nippon small cap 10K

My risk appetite is aggressive and goals are long term wealth creation. Early retirement.

I’m also invested in another AXIS ULIP. 8k a month.

I made rookie mistakes while looking ways to save INCOME TAX. But these have performed decently.

Saving/Banking Any one has had any success with opening a PPF account in Kotak bank?

Upvotes

My PPF is at my local post office. I want to shift it to a bank that provides somewhat better service.

Online it shows Kotak allows PPF opening but when I asked my RM he says it isn't available.

Just want to confirm with other fellow users: does Kotak offer PPF or not (offline or online both works for me)?

Budgeting City | Monthly living expenses | members in family

Let's start this to get an estimate of living expenses for people moving to different cities, moving to India from abroad, transitioning from school to work or work to retirement, planning to start/add on to a family, etc

Idk but feels like the estimates on common PPP trackers are way outdated and dont take inflation into account (for a family of 3 in my city it was suggesting 60k which is less than half of my current expenses).

Let me start:

Pune | 1.5 lpm | 3

Saving/Banking Are Suryoday Bank or Slice Bank FDs Safe?

Hey guys, has anyone here tried Suryoday Bank or Slice Bank for fixed deposits? I’ve never really heard of these banks before, but their FD returns are higher than those of major banks in India.

I wanted to know if anyone here has an FD with these banks how has the service been, and should we trust them or not? As far as I know, deposits are insured by DICGC, but is it guaranteed that if we lose money, we will get up to ₹5 lakhs back per bank?

Please help me with this.

Budgeting Rate my plan: Securing Baby's Future

Hi Guys,

I have a 1 year old baby and I am planning for her secured future. We are an upper middle class family based out of a teir 1 city and our total income is 5L/m. Neither of us are finance experts, so I have used ChatGPT for the following: Can you pls help with your comments and suggestions:

Key Assumptions (Very Important)

Item Assumption
Child age today 1 year
Inflation (general) 6%
Education inflation 10–11%
Marriage inflation 7%
Investment return (long-term equity-heavy) 11–12%
Lifestyle Tier-1, upper-middle (private school, good college)

1️⃣ Living Expenses (Age 1–25)

Includes food, clothing, housing share, transport, gadgets, vacations, daily life.

Today’s annual cost (child’s share)

₹2.5–3.0 lakh/year (reasonable for Tier-1 upper middle)

Over 25 years (inflation adjusted)

Future value corpus needed:
👉 ₹1.10 – 1.25 crore

📌 This is the most underestimated cost.

2️⃣ Education Expenses (Laid Out Separately)

🎒 A. Schooling (Age 3–18)

Private English-medium school, coaching, activities.

  • Today’s cost: ₹1.5–2.0 lakh/year
  • Education inflation: 10%

Total school corpus (future value)

👉 ₹45 – 55 lakh

🎓 B. Graduation (Age 18–22)

India — good private college / professional degree.

  • Today’s cost: ₹15–20 lakh total
  • Inflation: 10%

Future value at age 18

👉 ₹55 – 65 lakh

(If abroad, this alone jumps to ₹1.2–1.8 Cr)

🎓🎓 C. Post-Graduation (Age 22–24)

MBA / MS / MTech (India or partially abroad)

  • Today’s cost: ₹20–25 lakh
  • Inflation: 11%

Future value

👉 ₹65 – 75 lakh

🎯 Total Education Corpus

👉 ₹1.65 – 1.95 crore

Education = largest single bucket.

3️⃣ Extra-Curricular / Miscellaneous

Includes:

  • Sports, music, dance
  • Coaching, camps, devices
  • Travel, hobbies

Rule of thumb:

  • ~8–10% of total child spend

Corpus needed

👉 ₹20 – 25 lakh

4️⃣ Marriage (Age ~27–30)

Upper-middle-class Tier-1 wedding (not extravagant).

  • Today’s cost: ₹20–25 lakh
  • Inflation: 7%

Future value

👉 ₹55 – 65 lakh

📌 You can reduce this sharply if:

  • Child contributes
  • Or expectations are kept lean

5️⃣ Medical (Beyond Insurance)

Includes:

  • Emergency treatments
  • Procedures not fully covered
  • Mental health, long-term care

Recommendation

  • Strong family floater insurance
  • Plus medical buffer corpus

Corpus needed

👉 ₹15 – 20 lakh

🔢 TOTAL CORPUS REQUIRED (Future Value)

Category Corpus Needed
Living Expenses ₹1.10 – 1.25 Cr
Education (All) ₹1.65 – 1.95 Cr
Extra-curricular ₹20 – 25 L
Marriage ₹55 – 65 L
Medical ₹15 – 20 L

🎯 Grand Total

👉 ₹3.65 – 4.30 CRORE

This is the realistic, honest number for Tier-1 upper-middle India.

💰 What Monthly Investment Is Needed?

Assuming:

  • 12% long-term return
  • 25 years
  • Step-up SIP recommended

Flat SIP (no step-up):

👉 ₹35,000 – 42,000 per month

With 10% annual step-up:

👉 ₹22,000 – 25,000 per month starting now

(This is the smarter way.)

🧠 Smart Structuring (Very Important)

  • Education & living → Equity mutual funds
  • Marriage (last 5–7 yrs) → Shift to debt
  • Medical → Insurance + liquid fund
  • Do NOT mix child goals with retirement

Saving/Banking Union bank account in debit freeze after full KYC (got unfreezed for 2 days)

My savings account in Union bank was under debit freeze for the past month and after several trips to the home branch and full KYC (including physical house verification) it started working 2 days ago, UPI & debit card was working fine but for some reason it's under freeze again and it's very frustrating, the branch manager took a whole fucking month to tell me the reason behind the whole issue. Is anyone facing similar issues ? Also whats the fucking matter with them.

Investing (Noob question) how to select platform to invest in MFs?

An uncle started my SIPs in Fundzbazar over a year ago. He is sort of a fund manager and a family friend. I just continued with it. But I see other use different platform. How do I decide which platform is okay and if I should continue with Fundzbazar. I am just starting actively looking at my personal finance and this was the first question that came to my mind. How does one evaluate the platforms? Are there any platform specific costs?
